VW O. Lunsfoko, Committeeman. Last Sabbath was observed at this place as Children's Day. During the en tire week the children of tho Sunday schooi worked diligently to make it a success, and well may they feel proud of their splendid entertainment. The chil dren began to gather early in the mor ning, bringing with them flowers and birds with which to decorate thechurch Many of the classes had emblems hang ing on the wall and a few had the name or number ot the clnss.

The speaking and singing were both good. Responsive reading by the Superintendent and the school broke the monotony usually ex- peiianced tit such meetings. There was quite an excitement on our streets last Monday evening. A couple boys began the sport by trying to fly a kite; and in a half hour from tlmo sev ral larger kites were nearing comple tion. Each owner was trying to have his kite fly the highest and bo further awav than any other.

The longest string was over a mile, so the kite could just be seen. The largest one came in the field about dark, and was sent up with a ball of fire on its tail, making a light that could be seen many miles away The tallest kite was six feet high, and the distanee above the surface was varl ously estimated At from three hundred to six hundred feet. Many persons living in the country did not know what it was and were considerably frightened. Last Wednesday a number of our citizens started a petition praying for an or dinance by the city council prohibiting cattle from running at large upo'i the street. On Thursday morning the following remonstrance Was started the undersigned "Kickers," of Madison, hereby take occasion to put hi a most vigorous "kick" against the adoption by the city council of an ordinance prohib king the town cow from running at large and pullliig down trees, and eating tip farmers' produce as much as she If the following had been added we be lieve It would have been complete "For verily, verily, we do believe that if the cow was prohibited from running at large upon the street, the fai mers coin In" to town would have nothing to look after except business, and would e.o to sleep while transacting the same, and ex tend to the merchant the almost irresist- able temptation of cheating the man, merely because he has nothhrg of im portance to think of, to keep him If the gardens of some of our best citi zens were to get over the fence to where the "town cow" was, and eat her up, we would soon have quite a number of i.ames added to the list and the city council would say nothing of the ordi DEALER 11 mm liiifiifl BOOKS, STATIONERY, FANCY" NOTIONS, TOILET ARTICLES, PERFUMERY, ETC.

Price says that the reports afloat in regard to the crops belns burnt up are false, and that the outlook tor a good crop is equal, if not better than It is here. The following resolutions were adopted by the Grand Army at this place. Itesolaed; that the thanks of Madison Post G. A. R.

Is hereby tendered to Rev. J. D. Smith Pastor of the M. E.

Church, lor the able memorial sermon deliveaed on Memorial Sunday at the M. E. Church in Madison. To Hon. J.

To the citizens of Madison for assistance in preparing grounds furnishing flowers, and in various ways assisting us in making Decoration day a success. Last Friday quite a number of our citizens attended tho school picnic given by Miss Myrtie Jackson and her school at District No. 78.

A platform and coats were erected in a lovely piece of timber belonging to Thomas IIoran, and a nicer pi ace for a picnic could scarcely be found. The speaking was nothing else than what we usually find in Miss Jackson's school of a good character and well spoken. The music was excellent, and all present enjoyed themselves first rate. At the close of tho exercises by the school, Rev J. A.

Cleavelandand Prol Kendrick were called upon, and both made some pointed, spicy and well selected remarks, after whioh a well pre pared dinner was enjoyed by everyone. In the evening a social dance was given In honor of Miss Jackson. Tho trons of the school speak iu flowing terms of Miss Jackson as a teacher, and we think the district board could do no better than to select her as their teacher for the coming year.
