A Raleigh (N. special to the New York Time says Tho town of Ruther-fordton is in a ferment over a choice bit of scandal.

About two years ago Mr. John Gilkey, a young man about 27 years old, married a Miss Rivings, of Georgia, and brought her here tolive. The marriage was thought a strange one, in that the husband was inclined to be reticent and retiring and strictly attentive to his business that of a merchant. The young was exceedingly fond of gentlemen's company, and was very soon termed "fast" by her sex. The young couple took boarders and among their boarders were several young men, including Dr.

Marsh Craton. The young doctor was called in once by Mrs. Gilkey, whom he treated for some ailinent. It was soon observed that the doctor and Mrs. Gilkey were somewhat partial to each other.

While the husband was down town at his store the doctor remained too long at the house with Mrs. Gilkey, according to the views of the neighbors. The little town was full of and some friend dropped Gilkey an anonymous note apprising him of what was going on. Unwilling to believe anything wrong of his wife, Gilkey handed the note to Craton, who endeavored to fix several parties with the authorship, and the town was agitated for several days over expected "pistols and coffee" for two. All this blew over, however, and the doctor paid Mrs.

Gilkey more attention than ever. After some time elapsed the husband came to the conclusion that he would endeavor to satisfy himself of the truth or falsity of the reports. He bided his time, and a few days ago he hurriedly returned from the store to his house, and the scene there presented, it is alleged, confirmed the reports of an improper intimacy between the doctor and his wife. The husband immediately returned the wife to her family in Georgia, and brought suit against Craton for $5,000 damages. The social connections on both sides are large and numerous, and the trial when it comes off, bids fair to attract considerable attention, A great many of our hotbloods sneer at Gilkey because he did not kill Craton and thus end the liaison.

His indictment and trial under such circumstances would have been a matter of form in order to reach a verdict of "not guilty." The fact that Gilkey has sued for money instead of drawing blood by means of a shot-gun has not added to his standing in the Death of a Spy. little grain, and cut largely for the straw. The returns from, the five counties absent from the tables in the June report have increased the acreage to 094,576 acres, or an increase of 11,192 acres, the acreage in Smith county being larger by over 7,000 acres. In the central portion of the State rust appeared in some fields a few days, before harvest, and reduced the yield somewhat. In Ellis and surrounding counties, the yield is very light, very few pieces having any rain, the fields being cut for the straw, the eastern two-thirds, the crop, has been the heaviest of In Jefferson county, one field of ten acres made 920 bushels, or an average of 92 bushels per acre.

James Parker, of Arlington, Reno county, threshed 1,200 bushels from 12 acres, or an average of 100 bushels per acre. The crop for the State is 29,321,802 bushels, or nearly a million bushels more than the crop of winter and spring wheat combined. Much appaehension was felt as to the future of the corn crop this year; tip to the 26th of July, when copious rains fell over all portions of the eastern two-thirds of the State.
