Oflice up stairs in Tompkins block, Xorth of Cherokee Co. bank. The Judge is an all-the-year-rovind democrnt, except when he wants an office, and then he thinks it a sin to elect a partisan judg'e. But the populists are onto his ways, and their committee refused to call a convention to nominate, and Mr. McCue will come far short of getting all their votes.

South Kansas Tribune, Independence. The Star Courier insists that if Emerson Hull i3 elected to the legislature he will favor the election of a U. S. Senator who will work for tariff reform. Will he vote for John Martin for senator the man who has made such a brilliant record voting against populist, Poller, on almost every proposition.

Some people are more interested in Senator Martin's success for past favors than they are in the success of their democratic friends in the county and state. The republican central committee met in Squire Tanquary's office at 2:30 p. m. last Saturday. The attendance was large and reports all favorable.

Prof. E. A. Herod was present and in a neat little speech thanked the committee for placing his name upon the ticket and promised his best endeavors for the success of the entire ticket from now until the last vote was cast in November. The committee transacted considerable business of importance to the campaign and adjourned.

There will be one grand republican ralley at Weir City on Monday Xov. 5th. J. R. Burton, and several other speakers will be there and the speaking will begin at 2 p.

m. and last until 12 o'clock at night. The campaign revival song ''I feel like I feel" will be sung in all its simplicit3. The Weir band and the drum corps of the county will furnish the instrumental music and Harry Saddler, with "One Leg Shorter Than it Reals' Ought to Be," and his quartet will furnish the vocal music. A lady from Fort Scott arrived in our cits Wednesday last and immediately went to our county jail where she found her adopted son, who was serving a short sentence for appropriating a pair of shoes to himself which belonged to a Baxter merchant.

Rev. Dr. W. A. Spencer, of Philadelphia, arrived in ovtr city Saturday afternoon, and at 8 p.

m. delivered his famous lecture entitled The Battlefield of the World." The house was well filled and the lecture was of the highest order. His song, I Want to Meet My Comrade" completely thrilled the audience. The dedicatory services began at 11 a. m.

Sundas'- morning. After two or three fine selections from the quartette, a fervent prayer was offered by the Rev. Mulvane of Cpetopa, Kaasas. Dr. Spencer then stepped foward and preached one of the most powerful sermons that we have ever listened to in the state.

After the sermon he proceeded to raise the amount due on the church debt which was about $750.00 but his most brilliant sermon had so aroused his hearers that in a few minutes he succeeded in raising near $1,050.00. Then the religious jubilee began which was most wonderful in its magnitude. At 4 o'clock in the afternoon that grand man of God conducted song service which was only the continuation of the former service. Again at 7:30 p. m.

the revival began just where it had left off but two short hours before. This man of Divine magnetic power then conducted a devotional exercise and after his most earnest exertatiou, "now is the accepted time." Many rose for prayer and on invitation the alter and all available space about the pulpit was crowded and such a demonstration of Divine power is seldom seen or felt as was here illustrated at this time and place. Old and young alike were thrilled with emotion that will be remembered for many months. potoi oiuce. LAWYERS.

The monitor's guns had been loaded, with steel shot and sixty pounds of powder, which at that time was the heaviest that had been attempted. Craven knew that the eyes of all the fleet were upon him. It was his great opportunity, and his chivalrous nature yearned for a fair trial of streng-th with the formidable ram and her famous commander. The fire of the fort was scarcely noticed as the monitor steamed toward her adversary, drawing ahead of the Brooklyn, the other monitors following Craven closely.

As they drew near the buoy Craven, from the pilot house, saw it so close in line with the beach that he said to his pilot: "It is impossible that the admiral means for this vessel to go inside the buoj-; I cannot turn my ship." At the same moment the Tennessee, which up to that time had lain to the eastward of the buoy, went ahead to the westward of it, and Craven, either fearing she would elude him or unable to restrain liis eagerness to commence the combat, gave the order starboard, heading the Te-wmseh straight for the ram. She had gone but a few yards, with all hands awaiting the order to fire, when one or more torpedoes exploded under her. Several persons of Columbus who have visited Kansas City, Kansas, know of the reputation of the "Administration Joint" of that city, which is backed by Lewelling. J. D. Botkin, in his speech Monday said, "low browed, narrow eyed populists." Now, if republicans should use this expression, pops would fly all to pieces about it. Chas.
