The wonderful power of the soil and the courage and the indomitable perseverance of the people to have won success times without number when the odds against it seemed overwhelming. An example of the marvelous sustaining power, of the soil is found in the reports that we read in dozens of weekly papers from the central and westorn parts of the state since the late rain.

The ground has been parched by six months of persistent drouth and it was the general conviction that noth-thing1 could save the wheat sown last fall and early winter. From the reports in the weekly press, however, there is not a county but already makes a cheerful showing of wheat. In some instances excellent prospects are reported. In no case does there appear to be the total failure feared Every condition has been arrayed against the crop. The drouth caked the ground.

The severe winter seemed to freeze what little life was left in the seed and there was a lack of tnow to protect it. If the weekly papers that have been coming1 in during the last two weeks are not over sanguine, however, western Kansas will have a winfer wheat crop this year; and where irrigation is practiced on small acres the farmers will be able to live well and lay up something for improvements.
