Leon Mnlhers and family of Colorado were the guests of his sister Mrs. II. J. Tihuetts this week, leaving Monday on an extended visit to the east. Mr.

Mathers is a descendant of the celebrated Cotton Mathers who distinguished himself in the days of witchcraft. Quite a delegation from Raymond attended the G. A. K. supper at Alden Saturday night.

Capt. Hamrick did handsomely us orator of the evening. A very satisfactory nnd pleasant time was expressed by all. The supper Is reported a grand financial success, net receipts being $40. Read the advertisement, of Frod Doermer in this issue.

Fred has just bought Uncle Sum Wilson out of the nieat market business, and is now running the. same on his own hook. lie is master butcher, and. will give his etitomers first-class" meat and first-class treatment. Miss Abbie Williams has been en gaged to tench the Ropers' school, a few miles south of ltaymond, for the ensuing term of two months, beginning next Monday.

Miss Williams is said to be an excellent teacher, and the people of the district seem well pleased at having secured her services. She will board witli Mrs. Osea-r Adams. The supper at Alden by the "Old vets." was a fine oue. The hall was litlwrly packed.

Sly but they made the eatables disappear. The boys cleared about $40. and then had plenty of good things left. The A.lden band, under the efficient leadership of Mr. Stout, rendered some fine music for the occasion.

The boys are improving very rapidly, and the good people of that city may well be proud of their band. After supper speeches were made by comiadesG. Kohrer and W. G. Ham-rick to which the old boys gave the closest attention.

One of Ray mood's bloods, we ate told, took bis best girl and her sister over to city of Lyons last Saturday, and came back by way of Aldon, where they took in the G. A. It. oyster supper and sociable, which was all right and proper, and in fact "just as it should have been. Now the vehicle used was a single seated buggy drawn by two handsome prancing steeds, and we venture to assert that young gentleman round the seat ample to accommo date its three occupants, and that, so far lie bad found much pleasure in the young ladies' companv, and looked forward to the ride home with anything but feelings of regret.

Now there was at this supper and social another of Raymond's young bloods, whom it will be proper to designate as No. 2, Well, the time for dispersing came at last, and the young man (No. 1) had driven up to the door of the hall, assisted the young ladies to their seats and was just ready to get in himself when No. 2 came along, took his seat between the two ladies and started to drive off. No.

1, we are told, however, was allowed to ride one of the horses drawing the buggy. And thus they arrived in Raymond.Cliarlie riding with the ladies and Jerry riding on one of the horses. Annie Sollitt, of Lyons, was in the city Wednesday, and Thursday, visiting old friends. Miss Sarah Adkins and Jerry Proffitt attended the teacher's examination at last Saturday. Miss Nellie Hamilton left Thursday evening for Zmiesville, Ohio, on an ex-1 ended visit to friends residing there. Mrs. .1.

N.Barbee lias been danger onsly ill since our last isftie, but we re glad to is considerably bet-ter. T. IT. Bailey, in moving his slock to Stirling this week. We hope he will have nooccasion to regret the step.

January came like a lien'and stayed that way forquite a while, but finally simmered down, and went out like a lamb. The old ground-hog had a hard tiire of it yesterday to spe his shadow. lie will have no excuse for going hack to liis nap. Rev. J.

N. Bail ee did not fill his appointment last Sunday moruinf at the Baptist church on account of being very sick. "Squire Rath bun's court has been grinding pretty lively this week; but nothing of general interest has been tefore hm. Thursday was a damp, cloudy, rainy, dismal day, and we were glad of it. There was no Possible1 chance for the ground-hog.

Mother and child doing well. David Rathbun, son of our esteemed fellow-townsman, G. Rathbun, is at home pn a visit, having arrived the early part of the week. Don't smile when everything is lovely, and then frown and look as sour as krout, when adversity comes. This isn't consistent.

Smile always. A. A. Pinyard and wife and Martin Winebrenner and wife were at Alden Baturday. They had a good time, and made the good things suffer.

Alderman and Mr. Burns, of the firm af Miller Burns, of Sterling were in the city Tuesday, and contracted with the Independent for advertising. They are both pushing and active business men and know when and how to do business. The advertisement of C. J.
