'2r 1 ENTERED AT THE PObO OFFICE AT KANSAS AS SECOND CLASS MAIL MATTES VOL, FRONTENAC, KANSAS, SATURDAY, APRIL 1896. NO. 12. JOURNAL WASHINGTON election returns published, Ilis WAS HIT KARD! Bucirs in. Range Freei TUe utl "Was Too Much For Tq the Honorable Hugh Finn, Kx-Palice judge, and the citizens and voters of the city Any girl uuder years of ago the greatest number of our of Fronlenac: The notice posted by the a.bov BUCK'S TRADE Cut from Pittsburg- or Frontenac papers from Feb.

20th to April 19th inclusive, will receive as a present the above mentioned range. (mportaju piece af mortality pn Saturday. April 11th. while not Addressed, to the undersigned, was so, itnpreo-nated. with low down glang and indecent language fefering- to myself, that I feel imperative to respond.

it The course of the Journal has ever been to treat fairly and im partially each and every issue of interest to the people of Fron tenac, to be neutral, and to do all in its power for the (jest interests of the people. Friends were scarce when the Journal was first started, yet Mr Hugh J. Finn was among- the BtfiaH number that done what they eould to help tfye enterprise along-both financially and by furnishing- news, Being- in a position to know many things his help was accepted and whatever he report ed was used with confidence, as to the authenticity of the news, It should not be wondered at that we did not scrutinize the item causing- the present trouble. That a notice was printed in the Journal, furnished by him, and which was detrimental to the People's ticket is a fact. That he was an interested party in the result of that election and ap peared to be the moving- spirit therein is also true.

What his mo tive was I do not know, nor care He was accused in my presence of ha vin-tr furnished the notice as a political trick, and his denial was ino'st weak. Jut let the people judge. The extra edition of the Jour nal -April 5th, simply crave the truth and thereby rec tified the impression made by the publication of the notice. Under the circumstances I fail to see how anyone desiring only justice, and being willing to give others' that which they expect themselves, could possible take promise to let the joints, fin open ly did not avail much, for the people have heard office seeder's promises, before, and took, his for what they were worth, Our ''pauperism" is, not a. disputable fact.

Had we a fortune it is doubtful if we should have located in Fratitena.0. to try and make a living-, Just one word, Mr, Finn, about the "kicking-" operation, If I thought lor one minute that such a little, dried up piece of anatomy as yourself could do the job with out a step-ladder I should feel in i most precarious position, As it is I hayes no fears of any great personal violence, No, Mr, Finn, we had not for gotten tha.t lsthe election was over. Un tne contrary, eyiaence that we realised it was over is plainly found in last weeks paper. If you can forget it, however, we will be magnanimous enough to drop the matter. Trusting that the citizens of Frontenac, and Mr.

Hugh J. Finn, will feel satisfied with the above answer to his contemptible burst of speen posted Saturday, April 11, 18, I hope to remain yours for justice and fair play politically and otherwise, Cakl Andrews. Washington, April the first time since congress met the probable democntic candidate for the presidency is one of the leading topics of conversion among politicians, Thu ia largely, if not eii' tirely, owing to conference at the white house several days ago which wax participated in by President Cleveland, Whit, ney and Sepretar Carlisle. The conference wm held at night and was strictly socret.

but rumor says that Mr. Whitney has laid aside the hard feelings against Mr. Cleveland which canscd him to refuse to meet that gentleman for several years, and has agreed under certain conditions to attempt to have Mr, Cleveland again nominated by his party, This rumor hag been any thing else hut pleasing to the silver democrats. They know what Mr. Whitney's management means.

Mr. Cleveland never would have been nominated the last time had it not been for Mr. Whitney's clever work among the delegates after they got to the convention, It is also said that the Cuban question is involved in the Whitney-Cleveland deal, and is to be used to help Mr. Cleveland, In this con. nection it is understood that the offer to mediate between Spain and the Cuban revolutionists was made more to gain time than with any expectation of its being accepted by Spain, and that it will be sometime before the real policy of the administration is made public.

The friends of speaker Reed in the house and of Senator Allison In the senate, who are doing everything to bring about an early adjournment of oongross, may discover after they accomplish their purposo, as they now soem likely to do, that they have played into Mr. Cleveland's hand. There are good reason for the belief that he would much rather have congress out of the way than in session hen he gets ready to display his real Cuban policy. The pressure on 'he house com- mittee on Territories finally cot a favorable report on the bill for the admission of New Mexico to state hood, but inasmuch as three mem bers of the committee stated that they voted to report the hill in order to give the house a chance to voto on the question and that they reserved the right to vote against the bill on the floor of the house, the report has not added materially to the prospect for legislation at this session. The Arizona bill has been withdrawn temporarily to save it from being permanently shelved by the committee.

There is truth in the assertion that this congress has spent more time looking for trouble abroad than it has in attending to useful home legislation. The latest reach after trouble is a resolution now before the senate judiciary committee, requesting that the president intervene with the British authorities to secure the release of Mrs. May brick, now serving a Iifo sentence in a British prison as a result of having been found guilty of poisoning her hus band. Mrs. May brick is an Ameri can and there has always been much sympathy for her in the United States and a general belief that ch was innocent of the charge upon which she was found guilty, but that does not give the president any right to intervene with the British authorities in her behalf! hence the resolution offered by senator Call, of Florida, is morely another reach after trouble.

It oug-ht to die in committee, but nobody can tell what senators will do these days. A Chicago firm of seedsmen have filed some ugly charges against secretary Morton and several of his assistants in connection with the recent awarding of the contract for furnishing the seeds to be distribut ed free this 3'ear by congressmen. This firm claims that its bid was thrown out, although it was $10,000 lower than the bid of the successful firm, by reason of false statements made by secretary Morton to senator Proctor and Representative ads- orth, who acted with him as a com mittee to award the contract Secretary Morton denies all the charges. Tiie matter may get into congress where secretary Morton has fewer friends than any other member of the cabinet. Wm. Hinkson, Wm. Post, of Kansas City, and Jasper Butler have secured a lease on 120 acres of land lying 5 miles south from Joplin, which is now causing considerable excitement in mining circles. Last week a rich lead strike was made on the ground at the depth of only 8 feet and 500 pounds of lead was thrown out by two shots. It is one of the wonders in mining.

The entire body of land seems favorably situated for rood mineral, but it is not every shatt that will show such remarkable dcvelopemcnts at such a depth. The Cramp mine on the north Empire ground, shows up a 20 foot face of lead today and the owners are beginning to feel that the "cramps" will not be a thing of long duration. The King Mining operating a lease near Budgetown, started two ntw shafts this morning. One of the Budgetown saloons is located on the lease, and we would like to see the company tr.y to enforce the rule of 'no scrappers" allowed on the ground. Holmes Cq.

Just why Mr. Finn should take the matter to himself is quite beyond comprehension, unless what was printed in the Journal was true. If true, he has evidentally lost his cunning, and b' his actions plainly admits that the truth had been too well told. "Throw a rock among- a lot of curs and Ihe one that is hit will yelp every time." The aovc maxim is substantiated by the course pursued by the above individual since the late "land slide' in this city. The public notice was the "yelp," and eminated from a very trying case of biliousness brought on by the defeat of a pet idea that the g-entleman had a mortgage on a small corner oj: the earth and could forclose it at will.

When a man becomes afflicted with that most prevalent malady, the swelled head, and thinks he belongs to a better class of people than those with whom he associates for his living, he 13 out of his latitude, and never gets back again until his malady is cured or lie finds his way to the exalted people of whom he imagines himself to be equal. That the citizens "of Frontenac did not discover the beauti-lude of character possessed by this bilious (gentleman before tha election is a fortunate thing for him, for then it is doubtful if he would have received as many vote; as he did. However, that some of the people understood him, is only too plainly demonstrated by the.
