Katherine Rogers, the distinguished English actress, supported by her powerful company, will give two entertainments in this city next eek, Dec. 20th and 21st, on which occasion she wil render the plays "The Hunchback' and "Camille." On last Sunday, as A. R. Palmer and Otto Burklund were driving down Mar ket street in a buggy, the horse suddenly shyed off, throwing both occupants out and doing them injury. Mr.

Palm er has been confined to his room-for several days. Mr. Burklund has re sumed his duties at Miller Bros. In the Hunchback, it is evident that in the grander roles of tragedy and classic drama. Miss Rojrers soars with sustained and unwearied flight to the loftiest achievements.

The letter scene and the meeting in the last act were grandly done and thrilled the house. Boston Transcript. On Tuesday last two of the Francis can Sisters of Charity paid us a call. These Sisters are in the city asking contributions towards building a hospital in Emporia. Thia hospital will be for all who may need their assistance during sickness.

The poor will be received gratis. All are very kindly re quested to assist them according to their means in this laudable enterprise. ThePeterton "cannon ball," which from that town to this city several times a day, had one of the liveliest of ive runaways ever seen Monday last. The team 4i6truck out" from this place and ran almost to Peterton, a distance of three miles, before they stopped. Parts of the wagon were picked up almost all the way.

No other damage was done. "The Spy of Atlanta" is the title of military drama which will be given to the citizens of Osage City January 4th, 5th, and 6th, by L. I). Dobbs, of awrence. The drama will be under the auspices cf Canby Post, No.

We are sorry to lose such good citizens, even temporarily. Hutchinson Douglass of Emporia, have the above machines, which can be seen one door east of Hanslip's drug store. The Christmas entertainment for the Presbyterian Sabbath school will be given this year in the opera house, on Saturday evening, Dec. 23d. It will consist of vocal and instrumental mu sic, recitations, tableaux, the Christmas tree, etc.

Santa Claus will make his annual visit, accompanied with the us ual load of presents, and attended by at least one representative of the frozen regions of the North. Everybody is in vited to come and look, and listen, and mitness the childrens? enjoyment, and be happy themselves. Exercises to begin at 7:30. There will be an admis sion fee of 10 cents for adults and cents for children not members of the school, for the purpose of helping to defray expenses. Children of the Sab bath school admitted free.

State Teachers' The annual meeting of the teachers of the state will occur at Topeka on the 26th, 27th and 28th days of December, 1882. Special rates have been made with railroads and hotels for the occa sion. The programme embraces prac tical Daners by a large numoer or our best educators, and is admirably ar ranged. No teacher- who expects to keep his place in the line can afford to miss this meeting. It is strongly urged upon the teachers of this county to at tend.

-Lansdowne, for the past few weeks. i Mrs. E. W. Butler, nee Miss Katie Lansdowne, returned to Kansas City this week after visiting relatives in the city for the past few weeks.

The many friends of Miss Lizzie Lancaster will bef glad to hear of her return to this city Wednesday evening last, after a few month's visiting in the east. I writer of letter winding up with "You are watched, look will kindly furnish more light upon the subject, as we don't comprehend, would be very much appreciated. Please call or write again and give name, all of which we promise to keep confidential. Messrs. J.

F. and C. II. Douglass, of Emporia, gave us a call Wednesday, and have taken up their quarters in the building one door east of Hanslip's drug store. These gentlemen, are the agents for the Cornett automatic washer, and it will pay those desiring such a machine to give them a call.

Rev. J. S. Sherrill, of Litchfield, Minnesota, has been the guest of Rev. Curtis for a few days.

Mr. Sherrill was a classmate of Mr. Curtis' and preceded him to Kansas by one year, and was stationed at Quenemo, in this county. Afterward, he spent 6ix years at Neosho Falls, this state, and then went to Minnesota, where he has since remained. Mr.

Sherrill's visit was a complete surprise to his friend, Mr. Curtis, who did not know of his coming, until he saw him in church on Sunday morning. Mr. Sherrill preached an excellent sermon at the Presbyterian church on Sunday evening, and spent Monday in visiting about Quenemo and Lyndon. On Tuesday morning the infant child of Mr.

and Mrs. Curtis was baptized by Mr. Sherrill at the residence of the parents. The occasion was one of much interest, in view of the special friendship existing betweon Mr. Curtis and Mr.

Sherrill. H. G. Thurman, of Chicago, Illinois, representing the Western Historical Company, of that city, called at the EPtrnLTCfAN office on Wednesdav. Mr.

Thurman is in our city gathering statistics and other historical data for 'The History of Kansas," an immense volume of reliable historical facts now in preparation by the company. This work is engaging the interest of our best citizens and we feel confident that will cover the vast field of Kansas history so completely that nothing will left undone to make it the most complete treatise yet presented to our citizens. Our knowledge of the complete and painstaking efforts of the representatives of this work, together with an acquaintance of prominent Kansas men or long residence and thorough ability to Write knowingly, engaged on the work, lead us to this conclusion. We shall have more to say of this excellent work hereafter. XTotice of Dissolution.

Sneak thieves entered the boot and shoe shop of Lrick Johnson, west of the railroad, Sunday night last, and stole several pairs of boots and shoes.

Each saloon keeper in this town has been ordered by the city council to chip in" $50.00 per month, the money to go towards liquidating the city debt. Justice of the Peace Hale has anoved into more cosy quarters, having fur nished the room formerly occupied bv Dr. Peak, dentist, into art office. It has been found by experiment that a crevice under a door large enough to push a penny through will let enough cold air into a room to require 400 extra pounds of coal per month. Who says that farming does not pay The attendance at the various Sunday schools lately have been largely increas ed by the ubiquitous small boy who; in his mind eye, sees visions of candies and oranges and Christmas boxes.
