B. Crouch, of Florence, the man o' many professions and master none, was arguing the "ca3e" In court Monday In this city. Frank Strohwig could not stand it to cook his own meals any longer, so he left for Holton Sunday i ight to bring home Mrs. S. and the little folks.

Turner, one of th bright and intelligent instructors of th Florence schools, was in the citv yesterday shaking hands with his school chums of yore. John F. Carter took the train on the Rock Island yesterday morning for Chi cago where he will spend a few davs viewing the sights in that great metropolis of the west. J.H.Smith, who visifpd tinder the parental roof in Dwight. Illinos, during the holidays, "has returned and can be found filling hia accustomed p'a- in the Grammar Department in the High School building.

A Mr. Stri pp, of Ontario, Cinada. arrived in the city Sunday and will take in charge the children of his unfor-'unate brother. G. C.

Stri pp. who was adjudged insane last week. Mr. Stripp was the guest ot John F. Carter while here.

Fred Wheeler and famllv left yesterday morning for Tayiorville, Illinois, where they will make their home in the future. Mr. Wheeler is a fine photographer and will go into business in that city. A copr of The Register follows hiir and will keep him posted on Marion affairs. Mr.

Chas. Gaunt, the efficient young Jeweller at Mr. Beck's store and who has been on a visit to Miami, where his parents reside, returned yeterday morning. Charlie says he had a grand time while there with his young friends slelgh-rldlng, party-going and other amusements too numerous to mention. We are glad to hear of his pleasant trip Elonesty compels us to admit that we are soiry to see some of our friends who mourn over the death of the Daily, but to others we don't know as there is any love lost.

You know a man that runs a newspaper Is just as human as any one else and it is impossible for him to live and hive his being when he is fed on wind and ''taffv on a shoe erring." As 1888 is leap year quite a number of our ladies will give a grand ball iu the Horner building on the evening of Fn-dav, Jan. 6th. The Register announced last week that it would not be run out of Marion, but would "continue to dish it np to the Ring, for the benefit of the people of Marlon county, and New Hampshire, too. Following this announcement John Dole, the elephant to the good peojde of Hills-lioro, comes out in his night roil sheet and says we "are going to leave;" that "the people have run us ent." A man who will make such a statement will doctor primary election returns and lock them tip in his office. The reliant who expects to do business, and therefore continues to advertise during jthe next couple'of months is the friend of the newspaper and therefore the friend of the city he resides in," and should receive liberal patronage from.

How is Dole, an Ignorant rascal, looked upon in Hillsboro? He is ignorant that he is compelled to employ a "jay" to edit his paper, and n.akes himself so odious in the G. A. II. post in Marion that some of the members are disgusted and do not attend. His brains are in his belly and the top of his head Is hollowed out like an oyster plate. On the other hand, Mr. W. II. Roberts, Marion conn ty's largest stock raiser, offered The Register 50 to remain in Marion, and W.

H. Dudley, cashier of the First National bank, say3 The Register is the best newspaper in Marion count the opinions of a prominent farmer and citizen of Marlon. Samuel Thompson, of this city, who has been suffering with a severe attack of rheumatism, is a sad sight to look at. Messrs. Case, of the Elgin, had the misfortune to have the reservoir of their large kitchen range burst last Sunday.
