Mr. Jos. Harper, of Lincoln county, was lu the city last evening, and. gave this ofllco a call. Ho Is an old frleud of Mr.

Caldwell, The Record Job printer, and we shall be pleased to meet him often now that he has learned the way. Our Mr. Caldwell is "taking In" the the C'awker City fair. Some of the Finest Work Kver woiie in Kansas Now in course truction on the Uulldlnfr of Mr. ltest's, belnR Built In this City Some of the finest work In this city is being done upon Mr. Best's new building that is now being fast completed, on tho corner of Mill and Main streets. Mr. Wm.

Lescher, overseer and contractor of the work, has employed some of the best work men lu the country, and is showing great taste lu the construction of the building. Of one of the meu engaged by hhn, we wish to speak in particular. Mr. A. B.

Brookfield, when but a boy, learned tne art of sculpturing, In the citv of Philadelphia, and sinco then he has worked in most of the larger cities of tho West, dis playing the best wormanship and skill. For live years he acted as foreman in me large establishment of Chas. Rule, in Cincinnati. Twenty years ago he was at work In Lexington, on the monument of Cassics Clay and his family. On this piece oi work, which Is oue of the finest in Amciica, he spent one year nud three months.

From Lexington he moved to this Stale, where he has lived lor the past nineteen years, lie is now living ou a farm near Solomon Rapids. Yesterday we witnessed some work that he was doincr on Mr. Best's builUiug, cut ting the face of a lion from the solid rock and without the use of any guide excepting his eye, which we pronounce, with several others, as line a piece of work as we have ever seen. The people of this place should note of the line work that he has done. The Fair, nt Cawker City, commences to-day.

All deslrliiK to make entries should notify I.J. Kellev, Secretary, by letter, if they cannot bo there in person. ANOTHJiH EXCURSION. On this Thursday evening our city will be honored by an excursion party of business men of Kansas City, Missouri, Leavenworth, Kansas, Atchison, Kansas, and St. Joe, Missouri.

This party comes to our city with a view of seeing for thcmsslves whether or not the assertions, made by Tim Recoiid to the effect that Beloit is the best inland city in Kansas, be correct ornot. We trust that our people may take pains in showing our advantages to their visitors aud convince them that the assertions we have made, from timo to time as to Beloit being the Quoen City of the Plains, are true and that we as citizens are proud of onr flourishing young city. We earnestly recommend that our ciilzens each ovganizo themselves into a eommltte of one to see that the gentlemen, this evening, are properly received and well cared for. Let them go to their homes saying that Boloit is the most hospitable city, as well as the most prosperous in the State of Kansas. OLD SETTLKR'S MEETING.
