Spencer of the Kansas State Normal has been appointed super intendent, nf the Industrial school for o-irla At Beloit.

Miss Spencer is a high type of a Kansas women She is bright, energetic, cultivated to a high decree and is one of the best teachers the State has ever produced. The board of charities could not have made a better selec tion for the Beloit school or a worse one for the Normal. K. C. Star J.

Mead, traveling salesman for the Ridenour Baker Grocery- made us a pleasant call last week. He is always happy and can afford to be, as he repre sents one of the best house i Kansas City, has a good steady trade. He reports that his house secured the contract to furnish tea and coffee for the Kansas State insti tutions for the ensuing year. We asked him about the situation in the 5th dis trict, and he says it looks as though Judge Sturges was in the lead. He thinks An derson is downed.

We are compelled to announce the resignation of Miss Mary Marshall as superintendent of the Industrial school for girls, at this place. We are not much surprised however, knowing how hard she was worked, but was in hopes she would try and hold on until she could see her young charges housed in their new home. There will never be another person in that position that the people of Beloit will feel the loss of as they do to lose her. She was here when the school was maintained by private charity, and Dame in close contact with the people. She has the respect of the entire community and the love of all under her care.

Miss Marshall has made a model institution of the school. Her resignation takes effect July 1st. Bishop Thomas, of the Episcopal church in Kansas, made Beloit a visit last Sunday. He gave two very interesting sermons, morning and evening in St. Paul's church.

In the morning the Bishop preached a very flue sermon on "The wedding Uarme'v- in the eyemng another lay 'Nation filled iave a its 9ff.s beautify111111'" Yl ahe farmer hun me IO responsibi lUinaii nature, taking as his text from r- f13t. Paul's letter to the Romans, "None or us nvetn to nimseir, ana no man aietn to himself." After this very impressive discourse he received a number of persons into the church by administering the Rite of Confirmation. His concluding address to these persons was particularly appropriate and Godly. Every one seemed pleased with the sermon and en- jujcu uit j-iiiup a rcucuiug visit. Y.

M. C. A. NOTES. Our leader for next Sunday, is Will II.

Myers. uur Diuie class wm meet at each Monday hereafter. m. The attendance in our reading room has increased considerably since the Normal Institute opened. We will haye a meeting for the practice of some new songs next week Thursday evening at 7 :30 o'clock.

Rev. C. H. St. John and the general secretary held a.

meeting at Fairview school house last Sunday evening, the former preaching from 1st Cor. 3: 11. The attendance was good and one young lady was converted. The first of a series of monthly socials will be held in our rooms Friday evening, June 20th. All are invited to attend, both ladies and gentlemen.

We anticipate a pleasant evening. Good music will be a feature of the entertainment No admission fee or collection. It has been objected by some persons of late that the tests to ascertain the number of Christians in our audiences make those who are not Chiistians unpleasant ly conspicuous. We wish to say, therefore, that hereafter no test will be made at the meetings except that of accepting the Saviour. Normal Brevities.

The visitors on Friday, June 12th, were the following: Miss Anna Webber, Mrs. Dr. Mason, Mr. E. E.

Brewer and Mr. John McCauley. The first week's record was very commendable, there being only seven tardinesses and six absentees. On Tuesday, the number was 134. In last week's items the words "stand up" were used.

Could they stand any other way, The class in "organization and management" when discussing the qualifications of a teacher, unanimously decided that no one should be allowed in the school room who used tobacco in any torm, profane language, or intoxicating liquor. The sentiment, that gum should be discarded by the teacher, also seemed to prevail. The number of students attending the Institute from the various schools of the county, is Beloit high school, twenty-two; Grellet Academy, fifteen; Cawker City high school, four; Glen Elder school, three. On Monday we were surprised to see the familiar face of Mr. Robert Brown, who was in Normal three years ago, and as we understand, has been teaching in the county since that time.

Miss Alice Dodge, one of the teachers in Jbseioit mgtx school, was also a visitor. The greater the degree of ignorance, the more often is quoted the homely expression, "Grammar don't do no good, no how," and that such and such a study is of no benefit to a person. Among this class, we are sorry to say, are many farmers who think reading, writing, and spelling are sufficient for their boys and girls. Why is this? Because they have a wrong conception of the matter; they look at the subject this way: that the individual is studying grammar, rhetoric, just for the text. If there could be a reform wrought on this point education would be greatly benefitted.

If a trained and cultured mind is better for the merchant, or the man of business, why not above all, for his occupation is the noblest, the farmer. The expression used means, grammar is beneficial. We are happy to say the above does not apply to the farmers of Kansas. Coirp. Howard Hale.

Mr. W. is a liberal buyer, see his ad. in this papper. We this week are happy to announce the appointment of W.

H. Caldwell as Receiver of the Kirwin Land Office at Kirwin, and also the report that his son Robert has received an appointment as Cadet at West Point Military Academy. We wish he had 12 boys instead of one, and would make the politicians furnish posiiions lor each and every one of them but he has done pretty well, he has forced them to fix the whole family. Some people thought it was all bluster when he threatened to publish letters from prominent ooliticians showing their double-dealing, but the people will believe he has some very damaging letters, or the politicians would not pick them up while he is bolting a Republican nomination, and give them the best positions in their gift. While we do not particularly admire this style of procedure, we think it is as honorable as it is for politicians to secure support by promise that they do not intend to fulfill.

Brother Caldwell has come out on top and we extend I Dr. Canter has the only Crystallized Medicated Jjenses in this country, and fits them to the Eye when all other glasses have failed to giye comfort.
