WELLS. Agt. As has already been stated, Kelly is on a boom, several houses being under way of construction and a number of other buildings contemplated. Kelly is much in need of seveful other lines of business, principally among these is a bank. Tbe commissioners cut down the smallpox bills to $2,035 and allowed them at their last session.

Owing to a. misunderstanding of an order made by the board the smallpox bills became somewhat entangled. The county commissioners may not be to blame but they should endeavor to attend the county's business with the same care that they do to their own. That Js what they aie paid for. The county Is plunged Into long litigation owing to the unfortunate smallpox cases.

Mr. Brown i one of the best educators in the county, having taught a successful term at Lincoln last year. The board would do well to secure blm.

It Is repo-ted that the bmr has. struck Centralia -but1, of the wingless two-legged variety. He caught a pretty 16- year old girl near the Opera house Sunday evenintr and kissed her twice before she could scream and the girl says that the bold fellow ran his tongue three times into her mouth the last time he Hobsonlzed her. There will be a grand ball given at the Kelly opera bail on Friday evening. July 28th.

Tbe best of music has been secured and a splendid time is expected. There is no possible harm in a social select ball, properly conducted. The active young people must baye some amusement and if they cannot be permitted to indulge in innocent ammusements at home they are often tempted to seek more harm ful sport elswhere. The people of Kelley were surprised at the way some of the young girls of Seneca acted here Monday. We think that they had better been at home with their mothers.

It was no way for ladies to act and some of them were rather young to be out it. company without their parents. They acted very unlady like. They stood on the platform of tbe town pump and took a turn about holding the tin-cup up and trying to see which one could kick tbe highest. The whole party acted a i uue uud the boys and girls went up the streets with their arms around one another.

The modesty of Kelly was very much shocked. JOHN STEBBINS Is one of the leaging grain dealers in the county. He began business here for Scott Spaulding a year ago last March and the amount of grain he has handled seems almost enormous for a place the size of Kelly. Last year he handled over 125,000 bushels of corn at his dump here and' about 5,000 bushels of oats. He also pays the highest price for live stock.

Surprise Party. About thirty young people gathered atthe home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Ridgway in honor of Rosa's 14th birthday.

The evening was spent in singing and games of ail kinds. Ice cream and cake was served and at about 12:00 o'clock each deparced for home wishing Rosa many more such birthdays. J. E. WILCOX.

While of course the plan of construction of the areial locomotive Is kept secret yet the Professor has convinced his most intimate friends that he has touched the button that inventors have been looking for, lo, those many 'years. It does not "fill a long felt want" but a present want, for when Kelly wants anything she goes, after it and gets it immediately. K.elly has been growing the past year or two as no Ollint iunU III ciuuim vuuiij is now one of the best little towns on the Kansas City and Northwestern Railway. It baa business men full of energy and push who realize that a good local newspaper would be advantageous to its interests. Them is not a better agricultural country anywhere id the world than that surrounding Kelly and there is no reason why this place should not make a city of much importance in the near uturo. There has been fifteen or twenty business aiid dwelling houses erected since the first of January and many more ate contemplated.

The business men of Kelly are the broad gauged kind that realize that advertizing pays whether it is lor the town of Kelly or for their various business interests. They also realize that it costs money to run any business and especially a newspaper and have shone a disposition to assist the new enterprise in way possible for they know as the town grows so also doos the value of their realestate and it is to their interests assist in the upbuilding of a The Independent is not a political paper, but is a Kelly paper and whatever is for the interests of the town and sounound-ing country will be found working for with its sleeves rolled up so to speak. It will be to your interests to do so for what assists in the up building of Kelly also assists -you. With these few remarks we will drop our led pencil and go to setting type. Owing to non arrival of press and I other printing material from K. C. tliis week the Independent is not as large as it will be in a week or so, as soon as we get everything in working order.

Townsend, Gen'l Pass, and Ticket Agt. St. Louis, Mo. Dr. Fitzgerald Is moving Into his new store this week.

The Dr. will have one of the finest drug stores in this county. The more the country learns about the character of Gen. Leonard Wood the more highly It thinks of him. There Is no wonder the Rough Riders were a howling success, with two such Colonels as Wood and Roosevelt.

Gen. Wood's salary under the government Is $5,500 and he has concluded to keep on drawing It instead of accepting $30,000 to become president of the consolidated street railways of Washington. Gen. Wood's dry remark In decllnlhg the flattering offer was, "There are more things In the world than money." This should be generally circulated across the water, where America and mon ey are commonly regarded as syno nyms. The Chetopa Advance says that persons who allow cotton wood trees to grow on their premlsis ought to be arrested and fined under the provisions of the ordinance which prohibits the malntlnauce of nuisances.

A good many people will agree with him. The cottonwood tree Is a nuisance. It Is the favored breeding place of the festive and blood-hunting bed bug. The falling cotton is provocative of profanity, and the tree is not a good looker, any w'ay. There ought to be a law against allowing a cottonwood to grow within a hundred miles of a man's home.

Capt. William Astor Chandler, congressman from New York, Is the president of The New York Star, which Is giving awaj' a forty dollar bicycle daily, as offered by their advertisement in another column. Hon. Amos J. Cummings, M.

Those wishing to subscribe can drop a letter to the Independent, Kelly, Kansas, or hand in your name to the postmaster. Under the floor of a mail car torn up in Deleware for repairs, thirty-seven letters were found dated la 1861. One of the letters contained the distressing intelligence that the baby had the measels, but it is to be hoped that the liitle darling has recovered by this time. This paper is non-political and will need the hearty support of all our citizens in order to do justice in show ing up the advantages of Kelly and surronding country- Remember that a little money given to your home paper is well invested, for what benefits your town and country increases the valuation of your property. Eugene Dorcas returned from Ottawa Monday, where he bad been visiting bis children who are living with their garndraother.
