MARION. And Marion Center, or Marion in modern parlance. It is a beautiful little City. The business portion Of tho City stands on a neck of land between the Cottonwood and Luta, and fringed with trees, these in turn are overlooked by beautiful homes on the hills that rise from the creeks and make the business portion of tho City the pit of a great natural amphitheatre. BEAUTIFUL HOMES.

And what is true of the appearance of this building, is true of tho business blocks and numerous homes of the wealthy. They are built with good taste and with a general architectural effect that far confirms Marion's boast of being the most boautiful City in Kansas. FACTORIES. There are three splendid flouring mills here and there is the foundry. Kansas is fast becoming a manufacturing State it may be step by step that diversi fied mechanical industry Is being introduced, but for all that, I have scarce visited a city in which I have not found some specialty of which it had the right to boast.

It is so here the foun dry, and the' foundry has its specialty the manufacture of solf-hcating flat-irons, from the child's toy to the wash-erwoman's heavy and polishing irons up to the tailor's heavy goose. "EVERY PROSPECT PLEASES." Leaving the foundry and ascending the hill across the Luta, I got a superb view of the country a splendid farming and stock raising region, over which the corn, oats and grasses were respond ing with giant growth to recent wel- come rains. From this "prospect hill," I was pointed out many superb homes W. W. Wheeland's, Levi, 8.

L. and II. A. Billings' homes Fied Rouse's, whose home and orchard lot occupy the plat of ground upon which I camped for three long months during the Summer of 18G8. THE Y.

M. C. A. But descending tho hill and crossing the bridgo in Central Park, we come to the Y. M.

C. A. Building. It is the first of its kind in the State, and is a noble structuro of stono. Arranged for an auditorium, gymnasium, bath rooms, library and ofliccs, it is complete in all its arrangements, and when finished will provide a'resbrt for the youth that will have its influenco in making good citizens of tho boys, worthy citizens of the beautiful place in which they arc being raised.

Such a resort, peculiarly indicative of tho moral ontcrpriso of Kansas, is something better than a salooneven a Missouri Democrat will admit as much. HEAL ESTATE. Good farming lands about tho City, along three woll timbered streams, the Cottonwood, Luta and Creek, whr.t is property worth in and around Marlon? Raw lands can be bought lor $12.50 an acre; well improved farms are worth $00 an acre. City property is valuable. Business lots are worth 2,500 to $.1,000, vacant at that.

Rcsi dence lots can be bought for $100 to $300. a iiousi) tr. At that time, 8ti8, Marion county em braced; the country west to the Colorado lipe and all south the Indian territory in, allihis vast region, outside of the military and isolated and i scattered post. re; were not over 104 bona fide settlers, 01 this number about 100 fled to Marion Center, and there during the summer they were guarded In safety by xegular troops, and all the following fall and winter state troops watched aver the little heuilet, while. the regular troops were: way campaigning with Custer the campaign terminating with the annihilation of Black Kettle's hand on Hamilton south of the Antol-ope hills, away down in Oklahoma. Dr. J.

N. Rogers, Btill here, was then county assessor, and to get enough for current expenses, which amounted to $2,452, only, the tax gotherer went as fur as Ft. Dodge, to make up the amount, fuc- ng death, or dodging the bloody agents of murder, the Indians, every day to and from the far post on the Arkansas river. THE PROSPEROUS PRESENT. Now the small part of the region re taining the designation of Marion County, after having fifty other counties carv ed out oi tbe original domain, has a population of 21,000, of which 2,609 are in Marion, the county seat.

The tax valuation is 15,000,000. The possessions of the people who twenty years ago thought a good buffalo pony the prime factor in earning a livelihood or meat supplies for the winter, are thus reckoned by the County Assessor Cattle, 32,000 horses, mules, 665; sheep, swine 24,166. There were Shipped from the county last year fatted cattle valued at $529,421. Dairy products amounted to 321,893 pounds of butter and 37,690 pounds of cheese. A FIELDS OK GRAIN.

The average sown and planted this season is as follows. Cbof. No or acres, Wheat 29.836 Corn 113.005 Oats 48,943 Irish potatoea 1,913 Sorghum. S22 Remaining from last year's crops: Corn, 162,678 bushels; wheat, 10,700 bushels. Does not my retrospect con trast with the figures that tell of present and prospective prosperity And when these figures are supplemented by the sights I have seen during a drive around town nnder the guidance of Mr.

Levi Billings, a prosperous and public-spirited citizen of this community, a banker, and one of the largest property owners here. Mr -Billings was here twenty years ago ho was one of the hundred whose scalps I helped to save. A COUNTRY WORTH SAVING. And speaking of the very fact of hav ing helped to save this region of country from the ruthless hand of the savage, my dimensions swell out with pride commensurate with Marion's growth of twenty years. And that growth has been astounding, though by no means has it been made in twenty years.

The place struggled along until the Santa Fe reached here in 1879, and up to that time had been outstripped by many a neighboring town. But from that date the town has been growing, safely, surely and in keeping with the develop ment of the surrounding country. THE nAIMIOADS. And just now a second impetus has been given the town by the incoming of the Rock Island. Speaking of this road Mr.

Levi L. Billings says it' has done much for the town it has won favor and confidence and has lent a helping hand to enterprises altogether likely to atig ment old and promote now interests. STONE QUARKIES. Among the latter is the opening ot splendid stone quarries here. A Kan sas City syndicate has the undertaking in hand and the Rock Island is putting in shipping facilities.

Just hero it may he romarked that the greater number of tho business and all the public buildings here are built of stone, quarried near at hand and which is claimed to be more compnet and finer grained than tho stone of Florence, Strong City or from any quarries of the Lottonwooa valley. MINERAL STRINGS. Another interest which tho citizens are socking to promote and to which the Rock Island proposes to put a helping hand, is the mineral springs here Right in tho City superior mineral aters of great curative powers have long been used, but tho main source of supply is at the springs on Clear Croek four miles from town. There are four springs of fine sulphur water, as thoroughly lin prcgnated with this medicament as the most fatuous sulphur springs of Virginiu Fresh Field and Garden Seeds.
