Dodge, re cognizing his worth and capabilities. assigned him to a place on his staff. where he remained until out in April 1803. mustered After his discharge he settled on a farm near Macomb and rKid.I thftrA- on until 1870 when he came to Kan sas, first settling at Huinbolt. In 1875 he came to Elk county (then known as Howard county and com- posed of the present counties of Elk and Chauaauqua) and settled at Ca- nola, a frontier trading post situated about one mile southeast of the pre sent town of Grenola.

At Canola he ran a drug store until 1879. when a. I a a i ne present town or urenola was stablished, by a con solidation of the towns of Canola and Greenfield, he then moved to this place and opened the first hardware store in the town, and was also, its first post master, holding the latter position for eight years. When the Grenola Town Company. was organized, June 30th, 1870, he was its first Secretary and acted in that capacity until its disorganization Dec.

31 1885. It was he who suggested the rew name, taking the re" from Greenfield and the "nola" from Canola, thus giving each of the places extinguished by the establishment of of Grenola, a part in the name of the new town. September 9th 1883 he was married to Isabel J. Fouts, who with one sou, Mr. Frank Reid, is left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father.

and was a barter member of the same and from Us organization until his death he acted in the capacity of Post Abjutaut at each meeting, except four, He was a prominaut member of the Odd Fellows, having affiliated with that fraternity for over 21 years and held every office hi the Subordinate lodge and at the time of his death was Financial Secretary' and Trustee. Since 1888 he has been an active member of the Christaiu church of this city. He was always active in church, Sunday school and Christain Endeavor work, teaching by precept and example. He held the office of township Clerk from 1888 until a year before his death' and was City Treasruer from the time of the disorganization of the Grenola Town Company until his death. D.

M. Reid was, from the time he first settled here, one of the best known men in this section of the state He was leader and guider in every public enterprise, alwpys keeping himself posted an all public matters relative to lie welfare of the citizei of his community and county. In addition to his others business enterprises a number of years ago he opened an office which is known as the the town.

In him the soldiers and he soldiers widows and orph found a kindly friend and brother who at all times stood ready- tc ins-part information and lend a helping hand or hlp with his purse. J. S. Logsdon has been quite sick-the last two weeks with la grippe but is better at this writing. Verge Harris has hired to Charley Thompson for the coming Mr. Underwood has purchased the place occupied by Mr.

Pinegar and will take possession in the spring. Denton Boys shipped out a nice car ot hogs from their farm Monday Will Hawk'na has comminced his new house ami will soon have it completed if the weather stays favorable. Eli Stipps from Missouri was visiting with Joe Logsdon one day last week. Mr, Stark has trimed the hedge along the east side of the Shores place and taken out 1I the posts has it all completed except moving the brush and the road overseer says It must be moved soon as it is blockading the road. Howard A good rain fell Saturbay.

Roads are good and muddy. But very few people1 came to town Saturday on account of the rain and bad roads but they will come Monday. Anson Strong and family moved to Black well last week. Mr. Strong shipped bis stock of groceries last Friday and the family left Saturday evening.

Howard loses one of its best family byMrf and Mrs. Strong leaving he will keep a first class store in and they have the best wishes of all Howard. Lester who was buried at Grenola last week had a host of friends in and around Howard and tbo Antire community extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. Frank Martin of Union Center has rented his farm to James Taylor of our town and will move to Howard in the near future. The meeting at the M.

E. church is still going on there has been about 25 converted. The iceeting will last all this week. A largo number of farms have changed hands the last two months around Howard land is going up fast' in this community. Two of the men from off of Han.

nalis ranch got too much of this Howard brand of whisky Saturday and landed in the cooler. We are going to sand for Mrs. Nation. Hamer Bros, of this, city have rented the entire Swat.y ranch there is about C000 acres of land in the entire ranch and the Hamer boys pay 2000 for it. Ed!
