The weather was favorable and the attendance very large. The committee of arrangements wore very active in taking care of the arrivals ns fast as they came in, and the best of order was kept all day. The diiVereut committees deserve a great deal of credit for the satisfactory and pleasant manner in which every 'delnil of the. picnic was carried nut. The ladies should not be lorgotten lor tint splendid dinner they prepared, and their valuable assistance to the mimical part of the pro- gramme.

There were a number of speeches made uy itev. ii. fceiieiitcr, Hon. li, 15. Cowgill, Judge Ives, Dr.

Branch, S. P. Loop, W. J. Squires, J.

11. Kerfoot, 11c v. Witthrup, Wilson Keys and others. It was pretty hard for some of the speakers to keep from drifting into politics, but to the lasting credit of themselves and the committee in charge they did not drift. The speeches were mostly about farming and it was perfectly surprising to hear how much the preachers, the doctors, the lawyers and the newspaper men do love the farm.

There were several prominen politicians present, but after dinner they were too lull lor utterance, and they went around In a subdued way shaking hands with everybody. The music was very line. The glee club of this city, which is by long odds the best in the county, gave several songs that were well received. The baud also played several lino selections. Two of the pieces were especially good.

Our band is improving all the time, and bids fair to become one of the best in we-tirn Kaiicas. The dinner waa one of the liue-t. i'lie editor took dinner with Mr. K. O.

Fads, and to judge by the appearand) of his tablo and others near by there are pretty good times yet In Kansas. The game of base ball between our nine and the club from Chase was well played and closely contested. Tlio score stood eleven to leu in favor of Chase. Those belonging to tlio club in this city are Messrs. Seward, Kitlcn, Zerbc, Jones.

There were a number present from liaymond, Sterling, Lyons aud elsewhere, it Is to be lioedthat the farmers will be encouraged by this success and will have another hi ilm near future.

Below Is a part of a bill brought up belorc the committee of the house by Hon. It. F. Bond. It is decidedly to the point; so much so that it wus defeated.

"All payments of money or property, aud all contracts to pay money or pro-crty, whether paid or made in advance or not. for a greater rate of interest than twclvo per cent, per annum, shall be deemed usurious, and any person taking such payment or contract lor usury shall render judgment for greater sum than the principal Indebtedness." The pre.lilhli.ou rally nt IhU last Tuesday evening was well attended and considerable interest takeu iu Hie proceedings, 'llio meeting was called to order by G. T. Kerroot. The umber ol wagons ikily stlug through Alden on their war cast shows that a distressing sate of aliairs exists In western Kaiif.i. The crop in Out section was almost a failure In 17, and this season it Is no better. At a very natural consequence the people are leaving their homes In great numbctt, and starting on an extended visit to relatives In the cast. The people living in the river Valley.aud csjccially those living In the splendid farming country near Alden, bave not so much reason to complain as those In the western part of the slate.

Same or our farmers have even better crops than they did last year, aud many have nearly as good. Ur course it Is no use to claim a good average corn crop, but the larin ersoruus vicinity nave so inucii ncticr crops Uian their e.t rn neighbors Hut there Is comparatively little reason to complain. A DumWof our leading clllcni weni down to Sterling last Saiunlsy evening lo attend the democratic rallr at that place. They were both ilemocrais and republicans and they went in eight big wagons.
