The Chronicle will not be forced upon any man, hence he need have no fears of being compelled to pay for the paper when we voluntarily send it to him. When we get tired giving you the paper free we will stop it, and until we do you will confer a favor on us by reading it. This explanation is made because a number have refused to take the paper from the postofHce on account of fear that a subscription bill would follow.

We have not the time to make a personal canvas for the paper and sample copies are sent instead, with the hope that you will read the paper, like it, and become a subscriber. Earlton Embers. Mr. Hilton is having his residence painted. Miss Giest, of Thayer, is visiting with Mrs.

Umbarger. A peddler of silverware took in the citizens of our city this week. Ferd Huet, from Thayer, lectured at the M. E. church Tuesday night.

The U.B. people commence next week to finish repairing the church. Flax threshing in full blast. The yield is from 8 to 12 bushels per acre. Mr.

and Mrs. Brown, from Wyoming, are visiting friends in this city. Will Ames has commenced shipping hay. He has three cars loaded already. Elder H.

A. Reynolds returned Monday evening from Elgin. He says the corn crop is badly injured for want of rain in that section. VARIOUS ITEMS. Miss Sadie Wickard is visiting in Fredonia.

The Populist county convention will be held in Erie July 31st. A sign painter could probably get a job by calling at this office. D. L. Houston, central committeeman for this township, called Tuesday.

Miss Gertrude Coulson charmingly entered a small company Monday evening. The one-year-old son of Leon Locke is near death's door, and its recovery is doubtful. Chas. Priest, Al and Marsh Beard-sley, Arthur Allen, H. T.

Small, John Jones and Frank Hardesty drove to a point on Rock creek, near Benedict Tuesday morning, starting at 3 o'clock, for a fish. The party reached their destination at 5:30 and stayed until 11 o'clock. Some fish and loads of fun was the result. Hon. S.

S. Kirkpatrick was in the city Wednesday evening. He and Col. Dick Blue and others addressed a mammoth Republican rally at Walnut Wednesday, the crowd being estimated at fully 2,000, with a good sprinkling of Populists and Democrats present. Mr.

Kirkpatrick went from here to Clover-dale, where he addressed an old soldiers' reunion yesterday. who pleaded guilty to violating the prohibitory law, received a sentence of 30 days and a line of $100. Sam and John Lewis, of Chanute, who were convicted of violating the prohibitory law on one count, were each sentenced to 90 days in the county jail and fined State v. Chas. and Nina Nelson; charged with violating prohibitory law; Chas.

pleads guilty and is sentenced to 30 days in jail and to pay a fine of $100. Dismissed as to Nina. More Oil and Gas. Oil and gas were struck in well No. 1 on the Lawrence farm, near Thayer Tuesday and the well shot with nitro-glycerine with good results.

The McFarlan well, two miles from town, was also shot at about 9 o'clock in the evening, making a fine display by moonlight. As the workmen were putting the casing back in the McFarlan well Wednesday morning, the gas forced the oil high above the derrick. This is one of the best wells in that vicinity. Lindsay Marquand. N. Lindsay, the well-known citizen, and Miss Minnie Marquand were united in marriage July 4th, 1894, in Kansas City. This item is -a little old, but the news was not iven publicity until Wednesday, The couple have gone to Canada on a- wedding tour. Republicans of Tioga. Jarboe, who has been visiting here, returned home Tuesday. Good news keeps coming to the strikers, and they think it will not be long before they win. The Epworth League gave an entertainment at music hall Tuesday night, which was largely attended. II. District Court Notes.
