The new restaurant of Mrs. A. Comstock, is daily gaining a reputation as the place to get a good square meal. A good eanvasser might find a profitable opening by making an offer to us for canvassing for the DEMOCRAT. It is acknowledged by all that the Marion Shoe ore has the largest and cheapest stock of boots and shoes in the count.

v. Let every Democrat in the county attend the primaries next Saturday and see to it that none but true men are selected as Every farmer thinks he has the iggest corn in the eoimt3T. The only way to decide the matter is to bring jour samples to the fair. Marion county will have the largest and best display of agricultural products this season, ever placed on exhibition in this sectiou of the ate. Eememhei that if the fair should fill in any respect, the fault would be with you, the people.

Prepare stock, grain, and fancy articles for exhibition. Yesterday, T3 soKie movers were coming into town Iron the east, a little boy belonging to the outfit was thrown from the wagon, and his arm broken. If you want a first-class dinner while in town next week attending the Fair, call at the City ReslauraDt, kept by Monohan, ami you will be sure to get it. We were shown a sample of sugar last Monday, made at Sterling, in Rice countj', by the Kansas Sugar Company, which is as good a quality of sugar as can be made aii--where. Next week every man, woman and child in Muion county will be here to the Fair.

This will be a good opportunity for those indebted to this oflice to call and settle the Come up, friends, ami don't b3 an3'ways bashful. The columns of a newspaper are its proprietor's stock in trade, and it is just as much begging to ask him to devote space to j-our benefit, without remuneration, as it is to go into a clothing store and ask 'to be given a suit of clothes or 3113- other article without pnj-. Geo. P. Roberts is the Marshal and Chief of Police at tho Pair Grounds this 3 ir.

This fact i sufficient to guarantee that everything will be run on the square and perfect order maintained. George don't undertake an3'tLing but what it is done thorough. Now that the schools have opened, parents should see that their children attend regular-, and are provided with recessa- books, and other helps. iow the child that you are interested in his education, and that it is to his advantage nien-tall3r, morally, and last of all Gnan-ciall3r. The three weeks have come and gone, and the prophcc3r of the soo'h-sa3-er has proven untrue.

Daniel Webster like, "we still live." We shall continue to wiggle out once a week the bright and shining truths of clean-strained Democracy; and this, too, we shall do long after the toes of our last enemy has been turned up to the sun. "I served in the Tennessee Legislature," said a man to a new train acquaintance '-I served in the Kansas Legislature, and voted to refuse a resubraissioa of the prohibition amendment to a vote of the people," replied the acquaintance; and each man arose and arranged a pocket-flask to keep the neck from being exposed. To-morrow evening the "law and order'' people of Atchison propose holding a meeting. Just what thej' propose or want, says the Patriot, no one can ascertain 13' interviewing the leading membere. The general impression seems to be that they wish the saloons closed on Sunday.

How prohibition hoes prohibit! Bah! Our old friend and patron, Wm. Morgasen, known throughout the length and breadth of Marion coun ty as Honest Billy, has just remodeled and renovated ha store from top to bottom, filled the shelves up with brand new goods, an.4 is now ready to give his many friends tbe benefit of great bargains when they come to the fair next week. ing their energies in 'every locality where their rascally tricks tre not exposed by the papers. In order that onr citizens may not become the victims of these wandering laz zaron, we publish three of the latest swindling schemes that are being practiced successfully at the present time. We hope that when our subscribers have read the paper they will hand it to- their neighbor, who does not take it, to read, in order that he too may be placed on his guard, as it may be the means of saving him ten times the price of a year's subscription to the Damo-Ck at.

The following are the swindles and how practiced: The towns and country residences are visited by swindlers who call themselves agents for some CU3' dying establishment, and they call to collect shawls, clothing, to be dyed and returned, but the owners never see anything more of their goods. Another dodge is the self-supporting wagon tongue swindle. A far iner is approached by a smooth, oily tongued chap, ivho induces him to sign a contract to use the tongue and recommend it to his neighbors, but it a few weeks, this apparent simple contract confronts the farmer in the form of a promissory note, which he has to pr3'. Do not a paper, postal card or anything lse, when presented by parties who are unknown to you. The third swindle is as follows: A man drops into town, gains a residence and sells out or desires to move.

He goos to several merchants and asks it they have any account against him, as probably his wife had made purchases, If so, he de sired to pay it. Ot course there is no account. As he passed away he remaiked that possibl3r she may not have made the purchase intended, but would. This whets the merchant's appetite for a trade and when tbe wife comes in soon after a big bill would be forced on her. After After a visit to several stores and a good stock of supplies are secured the eonple skip out.

Let all bewsre. The world is be-coininf; full of thieves. The Presbyterian ladies have decided to erect a booth on the Fair Ground, -where they will, during the entire fair, furnish all who wish with a bountiful meal for a small price. They will also sell lunch, lemonade, etc. Those who wish to spend the day on the grounds will thus be saved the necessity of leay-ing for dinner.

NOTICE. All persons knowing themselves indebted to the underigncd, either br note or book account, must call an I settle the same by the first of October. This means business. A word to the wise is sufficient. L.

SofclVwt 'orncr of Third and Maia Streets, Marion. Kna. Lewis II ops, two of Marion's stone contractors, on last 5t'nday were awarded the contract to erect the double track stone arch bridge over Muddy Creek, at this place, they be'ng the lowest bidders. The contract price for the completion of the bridge is 10,500, We congratulate these gentlemen on their success in securing the job, and we also congratulate the public that in them we have first-class workmen, who will push things with a vim to the early completion of this long wanted and badly needed structure. Last Tuesda3- morning, Charley Jones, the popular hog and cattle buyer of Marion, shipped 40 head of high grade steers to Kansas Cit3'.

These steers were purchased of Uncle Abe Williams, of Lincolnville, were 3--ear olds, and averaged 1,400 pounds. In this connection we will mention the fact that Uncle Abe is one of the most successful and prosperous stock raiser- in this section of the State. He take great pains to keep the grade up to the highest standard, and as a coiisequonce his stock always liuds a ready' market at good prices. In another column will be found the card of John E. Cart 3', who tenders his services to the public as an auctioneer.

John don't put himself forward as a flue haired ''can't be beaten" in his profession, but he does guarantee satisfaction in every sale that he cries. In two instances that veknow4f, where amounts had been settled upon a9 the probable results cf the sales. John run them over and upwards $700 in one case, and $1,200 in the other. That it will pay those who have public sales to secure the services of friend John as auctioneer, these figures will bear -witness. Hi cries the stock sale of high grade cattle at Williams' ranch to-day.

'Democrats caa't- read," is an expression used so often by our opponents in a wa3" of derision, that it has, among a certain class, been accepted as true. This, no doubt, accounts for the absence of the sign boards of some business men in Democratic papers, asking for the trade of the members ot that part3r. More than once have wc heard men who are Democrats, and who take our paper, mention the fact of the absence of an invitation from busi 1 e-s men for them to come and trade with them, and in the same connection make llie remark that if their custom was not worth asking for they' considered it too good to givp it to them.
