IN Seven Thousand Iollars Paid for Lands Ad joining the Town to be Laid one ia JLotM. Two gentlemen from Topeka and two from the west signed a contract and delivered fofefit money this week for the purchase of sixty acres of land, adjoining Marion north-west of town, which is to be laid out in city lots and put upon the market at an early day. The progress of Marion during the past year has given the town a splendid reputation for enterprise throughout the state, and even beyond its borders. People are coming here now for permanent location in a steady stream, and before another year rolls round Marion will contain a population close on to 4,000 people. Nothing is over estimated in this town unless it is the cheek of its editor's and no doubt they are to blame for that.

Marion is moving forward with firm and rapid strides to the distinction of an important and populous city. Notice to Stockmen. Emporia, Oct. 26th, 1886. I shall be at the Elgin Hotel, Marion.

Kansas, from Nov. 4th until Nov. 14, for the purpose of treating and curing rupture. I guarantee a cure in every case treated by me, or money refunded. I refer to any bank, business house, reputable physician or professional man in Emporia as to my financial ability and skill to do what I advertise.

Consultation and examination free, most liberal terms to the worthy. Hundreds of testimonials from citizens of our own state. Write for circular. Dr. D.

L. Snkdikeb. Slatfield Green Item. Mr. Editor: Thinking perhaps a few items from this nook in Chase Co.

might interest some of your readers I will glean what I can. Business men are all doing fairly, Doctor Jones is kept busy he says night and day; the. other M. Ds. come in for their share, as there is considerable sickness at present.

Lincoln has piles of -new goods and is doing a lively business with Mr. Wnu-Kellogg of Cottonwood Falls, and W. Jones behind the counter with smiling- countenances, who could pass them by? Besides the store is moved to the new town of Richards and presents a striking appearance. Just in the limits of the old town Mr. Lincoln has a fine location good cellars and new elevator.

Mr. (Jarnes new drug store is grand with its shining rows of new bottles can't tell the No. of statements a month as I dont know, guess not many as the citizens all look straightand intelligent. They have a loan office, meat market, harness and shoe snops, livery ana ieea stables, the Post office is kept by Mr. Largent, he too does a flourishing business in general merchandise.

A good many new buildings are going up, the R. R. is almost ready for the ties, and rails. they are putting on the finishing touches. The cattle men are busy sniping the marketable ones and putting the others in feed lots.

Over the county the Terwilliger Cattle are still in quarantine with A. B. Emerson of Cedar Point (depy sheriff) in charge. I understand Mr. VanMeter and Farrington, contemplate feeding several bunches of cattle at or near your city, let me congratulate the good people of Marion in securing so brilliant a star in their society nrma nent as Mr.

Charles VanMeter. He is a gentleman of very fine culture and being well acquainted with him I can assure fond Mammas he is a fit companion for anv nf their Inval danchters. His Dard- ner Mr. Farrington I think intends winterinc in The teonle here are loth to give them up but when the robins nest again they will return to their large ranch where there is the finest SDrinsr in Kansas. They intend building a very fine residence in the spring the location is all that could be desired and it will be one of finest Mr.

A. W. Brewerton offers for sale a lot of fine cattle. Look up his local. Messrs.

King and Wlnslow have removed to new offices in the Bowron block. Judge Brockett leaves to-nio-ht (Friday) for a few days visit to his daughter at Augusta, Butler Co. Mr. A. W.

Briwerton returned from the East, oh Monday iastj- having thoroughly enjr3-ed his trip. Louie Lang staged on Wednesday for Columbus, Ohio, with Mr. Beebe's horses and a pair of Shetland ponies. Treasurer Howe took" a run home on Wednesday to see one of his children who was seriously sick of sore throat. We hope the teachers do not intend to let laziness or indifference interfere with their contributions to the Tribune.

Mr. J. L. Hosmer, a member of the firm of Donaldson, Hosmer our popular loan agents, is ia the city on a visit to Mr. Donaldson.

Dont forget the social tcnight (Friday) at the Christian Church parsonage. This is the last scene before the transformation of the Elder into the Judge4 The first wedding in the Elgin Hotel, occurred on Tuesday morning last, when Judge Brockett married W. S. Pope of Chicago, and Emma Lee of Clear Creek The ladies of the Christian church have asked us to announce that a social will be given at the parsonage on Friday evening, to which all are cordially invited. Marshall Lewis is keeping his broom new all the time, and will soon have the alleys clean, and the streets drained so that wading through ponds will be a thing of the past.

The Rock Island train (of surveyors) arrived here on Monday evening after an absence of some weeks, which they have spent in the neighborhood of Har rington, making alterations in their line. The Railroad meetirjg at Peabody on Saturday last unanimously endorsed the action of their delegates to Florence, in the matter of the proposed consolidation of the various railroad projects that are pending throughout the county. The Fort Smith bonds carried along the whole line by large majorities. In Peabody out of a vote of 360, only 4 were against. Catlin gave 77 to 34 for.

Liberty 51 to 21 for, and Risley 54 in favor. Thus does Marion county advance in wisdom and riches. Judge Brockett gave lis a glowing ac count of the marriage on Sunday at Mr. S. D.

Clark's of Mr. Slawter an Miss Scul- len. The Judge is loud in her praise of Mr. Clark's hospitality and would like to perform a ceremony there at least once a week. The Tbibone joins in good wishes to the young people.

The originality of Lewis Haacks advertisement in this issue would alone lead many to pay them a visit, and the comfort, cleanliness, cuisine and general excellence of the new establishment in the Schoeller building, under Peie Haack, will without doubt entice a constant influx of gastromically inclined visitors. On Sunday last occurred a most sad ac cident and one that it was thought at the time would terminate fattally, but though Ed Perry is terribly injured, his doctors have now some hopes of his re covery. Perry and his friends were out shooting and had all with the one ex ception, laid aside thjir guns while at dinnei. Perry, however, left his in the vehicle and the fall and accidental dis charge lodged a charge of shot in the poor fellow's abdomen which it will take him nany a long day to get rid of ELECTION PROCLAMATION. THE HUMAN FACE. Faces are as varied as the leaves of the forest. No two are alike, and rarely are both aides of the same face alile in measurements and angles. "I believe my face is crooked." said a bright intelligent lady, as she tried on a pair of Spectacles; and so it was, though she seemed to have been blissfully ignorant of it before. Now, many lines of spectacles only make this crookedness more apparent, and even make a face of perfect contour seem irregular.

The Johnson Optical o. of Detroit, manufacture and maie a specialty of their Dimension Frames and Lenses, which fit in the most perfect taste, thus enhancing the human face. For sale by CUENOD BAILLOD. Jewelers, OmciAxe. Flobknck.

We charge him most emphatically of the act of not willing to allow the Bock Island the same privileges and advantages in building Into Kansas as the Santa Fe had. This bears ns out In the assertion that he is a creature of the Santa Ver-Begitr.

If this thing is to continue, the epigrammatic editors of small fry papers must take to the woods. The above load of logic is entirely too ponderous for this institution. We are pleased to say this week that Prof. Van Ostrand is improving slowly. While he is not wholly out of danger, his friends hope to see him up in a short time, though not able to resume his duties in the school for weeks.

Mr. Smylie, the Democratic candidate for Sunerintendent is being most cordial ly received and encouraged inhis can vass. If he should be elected, on rues-dav. he will come nearer filling Mr. Bo gle's course in that office than any one who has held the position.

Sure someone might have had the kindness to correct, in some manner, that awful epistle in last week's Register, signed by W. A. Cullins. His many friends will be rejoiced to see Mr. W. M. Tomlinson about again after his long anil serious illness. The Tribune is the only paper in town that thought the recent purchase by capitalists, of property on the outskirts of our city, worthy of prominent mention.

Any one wishing to lay in a supply of apples for the winter can be supplied by calling at the office of Young and Barnes as Charley Barnes is expected to arrive from Missouri monday with a Dr. Weems started on Saturday for Florence saying he might perhaps go on to Chicago and New York. He has gone and is not expected back till next week, when his wife will return with him. The "Famous" Clothing house, recog nizing the superiority of the Tribune as an advertising medium, has, this week, secured more space and announces to the public a new order of things which purchasers will do well to note. The Register last Saturday did us the honor of designating our writings "hog-wash." This elegant and dignified ex pression, and indeed the element itself, is eminently characteristic of the source from whence it emanates. Our old friend Henry O'Neil made a big sale of 100 head of high grade here-fords to F.

Eckenro, of Grant township, last week. This is, we believe, the first sale of any large number of these fine cattle in this neighborhood and the prices received only prove the more con clusively the necessity of pure bred sires. Mr. I. A.

Shriver's canvass, of his dis trict, has been conducted so quietly that it has attracted but little attention, and yet done so thoroughly and with such effect that the name of his supporters is legion and we anticipate nothing less than a complete victory for the Democratic candidate for the legislature in the 66th district. Mr. Smylie's recommendations, as an educator, emanate from such well- known sources as Dr. Brinkerhoff, of Franklin College, Ohio, President of the Ohio State University and Dr. Lippincott, Chancellor of the Kansas State University Can any of the other candidates for the office of Superintendent show such an educational record? Next week we will publish official cer tificates showing that in Butler county, this state, on 1 13 miles of railroad to which the townships of that county vot ed $190,000 of bonds drawing 7 per cent, interest, the railroads paid in 18S5 000 more taxes into the county treasury than the interest for that year on the railroad bonds, and this too, not under any exceptional levy, but under a levy of a fraction over three per cent.

In railroad circles In Marion county the week has been a busy one, and consultations and agreements have been the order of the day. Three gentlemen connected with the Missouri Pacific Jroad spent Tuesday and Wednesday here, and on Thursday Mr. Low of the Rock Island was in town. All of these gentle men are making arrangements for com mencing the building of their several roads immediately the bonds shall have been voted, and we have it on the very highest authority that the Missouri Pacific will, under present arrangements, commence work somewhere on its west- era extension within two weeks.
