Syracuse Journal. There seems to ba quite a number of aspirants for Mr. Myton's place, and, as the Journal says, Mr. Frybar ger has been misunderstood by the people. As to his abilities being misunderstood, we know nothing, but we do know that he has good business qualifications, and is an uncompromi sing Democrat, and if Democracy will carry a man there, ha will get the place.

Of the other men we know nothing whatever, and feel that as Mr. Frybarger is a Syracuse man, we should give him our support. Dem- ocrat, TO THIS WE SHALL COME. Ine Walnut Vai ey Times, a bright and interesting paper pub lished at EIDorado, Butler connly, shows its appreciation of "Veritas' by publishing his article on "Prohi bition as a Factor in morals," entire. If anything had been wanting tc prove the Times the well-edued paper which it has the reputation of being, this would sete it.

Em- poria Ifcws. Wain at Valley Tiroes: "Veritas" reasons wen, but his reason is prompted by experience. He is now an anti-probibitionict. Hi3 desire to see temperance prevail through out the earth led him to pat his failh in learal thay fooled him as they have fooled tbe world for ages. History proves thaS prohibition, relating to wht people should eat, drink: art-I wear, has been laughed at and scorned, notably in Qatea Elizabeth's time, when the royal edicts were leveled at the extravagances of the court and nobility.

Head-dresses beyond teen inches eighth were forbidden; the lad ie3 promptly lengthened them to two feet and a half. The order was issaed againct the long toothpick pointed shoes. The people laughed and lengthened the tots of their shots, and even ran tiny chains fiom the toes back to the knee for their support. An edict went forth prohibiting the use of certain ri cloth, except to those who were land holders in a certain amount and had ai least a statea income per annum The rich and poor wore what they pleased and it pleased the many to wear the forbidden cloths. These laws also were in those days pointed at excesses in eating, drinking, gam bling with just as little success xhose were the days when the't ment death, aad yet thieving wss common.

The conclusion to be reached from Veritas' incontrovertable reason ing i3 that the prohibition of to-day is as week and powerless as in olden times; that the people cannot be leg islated info the practice cf virtue or the shunning of vice; that strong men and women are cot made by removing all temptation, but in grounding them so firmly in moral obligation to themselves and their fellows, and in religion, that th is superior to temptations which surely will baset them. The teach ingi at home; the precepts of father and mother, are worth millions be "li. i yunu tetai enactments in curtailing the vice of drinking. As long as humanity is constituted as it now is, this will always be so. The people of Kansas are just awaking to the realization of the fact tha actual prohibition of an evil is impossible, and that to curb, retrain and watch it, and to pile heavy bur den3 upon and thus discourage it, is worth many times more than all the theories and accomplishments of pro hibition.

"It is wrong to license a wrong," urges some tender con- si-iencea individual. This may be true in theory probably is, but in practice the license serves a two-fold purpose, a means of exercising sur veillance, and of at once reducing in number diiofeing places, while those per-ons wh will indulge their ap petites there, are made to bear, as they should, the major portion ot municipal government and improve ment. To this surveillance and restraint we shall evidently come. 1 OI be Iho IDe in cen monks will be provided. Wednesday, March 31.

After due deliberation with my friends as well as for strong personal reasons, 1 have found it advisable to decline to run for he office of County Treasurer or for any office whatever. Thanking my political friends for past kindnesses, assuring the party of my unswerving fidelity and undemin- ished support in the future as in the past, and sincerely hoping that the steps taken will inure to the benefit of the party, I am, Tour humble servant, John J. Fitvk. Geoveb Cleveland is displaying more good sense and greater nerve than any president since the days of the Adaiises. In the great army of annointments he is bound to make IT A some mistakes, but he never makes a mistake unless deceived by personal advisers, and when he is deceived he applies the scalpel, party or no party.

The Georgia legislature has just closed a four months extra session in considering the railroad and temper ance questions, and the people of that State are thankful that it is not worse than it is. When the venerable Bob Tootbs was told on his dying bed a few days before its adjournment that the legislature was still in session, he exclaimed: "Send for Ciomwell!" JCsX AS WE i' ii 111 4 1 The second "ballotage" of the election in France was not so disastrous to the Republicans as was anticipated by some writers on French politics. The combined force of the monarchists in the Chamber of Deputies is 205 and that of the Republicans i3 391. This leaves the riends of the Republic a good working majority. This is a complete set back to the silly corres- pondents who have been writing from France a lot of stuff about an impending revolution.

They have noted with great significance the fact that the first empire lasted 15 years, the restoration exactly 15 years; then IiOois Philippe had his reign for 18 years, Napoleon I I occupied the throne during 1 9 years, and the third Republic has now lasted 15 years. The third Republic has come to stay. When J. K. Hudsox acceded to the editorial charge of the Topeka Capital there were a number of State papers that viewed with scorn the man who had succeeded the accomplished Mr.

Ivtxg. Regardless of their frowns the Capital man took up the pen with a hopeful vigor, snd the result is he has given to the paper a tone of fairness and force in editorial discussion excelled by none in the State. He is antagonistic to our side of the prohibition question, and views the South from a different standpoint, but in these matters he shows a dis position to be fair, and brings to their discussion far more intelligence than many writers who make greater pre tentions. Some incidents in the brief presi dential career of Ajiy Johnson, just en to the public by Chauncy M. DEi-tw, go to show that the patriot! firmnees of the hero of Appomatox, General Grant, wa3 as much inslru mental in saving the country after the war ps during the terrible conflict.

Johnson started out on the policy of banging the leaders of the Rebellion and the principal officers of the Con icueraie army. wnen wbant was called into consultation as to cariying out the hanging, policy, he flatly re fused to obey the president's orders, and contended that the, conditions of Xee's surrender should be carried ont if he had to appeal to his army and the country. This rebuff was soon followed by flattery of the President by prominent Southerners, and in a very fchort time he was ready to take the other extreme, and insisted on calling congressional delegations from the South back to Washington without any evidence of allegiance or show of repentenee. Grant, in defiance of the President's authority, replied: "If you do, I will drive them from the Capitol with the army." There is a sublime patriotism and grandeur of courage in this declaration that is almost without a rival. I I K-.
