I lie justice holding; the oldest com missions by virtue of an election shall be the chief justice, and in cose two or more justices shall hold commis-missions by virtue of an election of the same date, older than the commis sions of the other justices, they shall determine by lot who shall bo chief justice.

The term of each justice of the supreme court shall be six years, commencing on the second Monday in January next after his election. On the adoption of this amendment the four additional Justice!) provided for by this amendment shall be ap pointed hy the governor, and shall hold their olllces until the next gcnc ral election in 1891 when their sue. cessors shall be elected, one to serve until the second Monday of January, 1 894 another to serve until the second Monday of January, 189C; and the other two to serve until the second Monday of January, 1898 The mem bers of the supremo court elected at or prior to the timo of the adoption of this amendment shall be justices of the supreme court under this amend mcnt for the period of time for which they were elected After the general election in 1891 one justice of the supreme court shall be elected at tho general election in each year except the year 1897, and every six years hereafter, when two justices shall be elected 1 he justices of the supreme court and the judges of the district court shall at stated times receive for their services such compensation as may be provided bylaw: Provided, Such compensation shall not be less than fifteen hundred dollars to each justice or judge each year; and such justices or judges shall receive no fees or perquisites, nor hold any other ollicc or prolit or trust, except a judicial ollice, under the authority of the state of tho United Jtates, dur ing tho term of ollicc for which sai justices or judges shall be elected nor practice law in any of the courts in the state (luring their continuance ollicc. Dean and wife visited in Lehigh Monday. J. S. is the most popular candidate on the republican ticket and will be elected by a greater majority than was given him four years ago. A pleasing feature with him is, that ho is ust as strong in the country as he is in the towns.

Foil many and weighty reasons, the defense of railroad property during strikes must not pass, from the regularly constituted authorities-to private forces employed by the companies. Railroad companies aro not to supercede the government. Tiik Glohk hopes the Marion county delegates can sec their way clear to vote for lion. A. S.

Thomson, of Lyons, for Auditor of State. Mr. Thomson is an old soldier, a veteran republican Villi conspicuous qualifications for the position, and, if he succcods, will bring the ollice near home. Mr. Thomson is very widely endorsed by the party lenders and seems to be the coining man.

Votkhh will look more into the character and qualification of candidates this year than ever before. It is generally understood that no can didatc, no matter by what party nominated, will stand a very glittering chance of election this fall whose competency and personal character does not recommend him to the confidence and approval of the intelligent voter. Be it resolved liy tho LoKislature of the State of Kansas, two-third of the members elected to each house thereof concurring therein: Suction 1. Tne following proposition to amend the constitution of the state of Kansas Ih hereby submitted to the qualified electors of the state for their approval or rejection, namely: That section three, article two, he amended so that the sumo shall read as follows: Section il, The mem hern of the legislature shall receive as comnensation for their service the sum of three dollars for each day's actual service at any regular or special session, and fifteen cents for each mile traveled by the usual route In going to and roturnlng from tho place of meeting; but no compensation shall be allowed or paid to any member for moro than ulnety days at any regular session, nor for moro than thirty (lays at an special session.
