SAPP, Custom Shoemaker, Caught at Carterville. Saturday afternoon word was received that the A. H.T. A. had located at Carterville, Frank Ben top, suspected of burning the barn of John Lundin the night previous and escaping on a stolen borse.

Under Sheriff John Aitchison took the afternoon train for Carterville, which is a village adjoining Webb City, nine miles northeast of Joplin. Mr. Aitchison soon found where Benton's wife was working as a domestic, and a short time after met the man and wife on the streets and arrested him. Benton is a small, undersized man with dark hair and clean skin and does not impress one as a professional criminal, but he has stepped at once from liberty to a long term in the penitentiary, He tdks disconnectedly of the crime of Friday night and has tried to give the impression that he had a companion, but this is doubted. He admits taking the horse, and says when he was a mile away he saw the llames of the burning bam, and thinks it must have caught from a ligeted cigarette lib threw down when he left.

Saturday morning he stopped at the Cupp farm east of Crestline and traded the Lund in horse for one of Cupp's which he disposed of in some manner about Joplin. Benton's crime is a most provok Considerably Scorched. Wednesday evening about 8:15 a gasoline lamp in Keiter's barber shop exploded setting fire to the in terior of the building. Tho flames were quickly subdued by the use of the Phoenix fire extinguisher powder in the ham's of Harry Miller and one or two others, but four tubes bein used. The hose cart was promptly on the scene but was notneeded.

Al Morgan, who was having his hair trimmed at the time of the explosion, lost a $5 hat. Mr. Keiter's loss is estimated at about $700, covered by a small insurance. None the of the building were injmed by the Hames but all the fix tures were practially ruined, the heat being 83 intense that every mirror was cracked and all the glass in the front broken. Within SO seconds after the lamp exploded flames leaped through the open door and a'crose the sidewalk but the Phoenix powder almost instantly proved its efficiency as a subduer of the fiery fiend.

Every business house and residence in the city should have one or more of these powder filled tubes as there is no telling how much damage would have been done in this instance alone had everything depended on the use of water.
