OHO. VV. REED, Topeko, Kas. of-tho "growing evil of intemper ance. Drunkenness.

(Jen. Neal Dow'a prohibition leg islation in Maine has increased the county tax four fold in nearly every county in tho State. In fifteen years tho county taxation at Bangor has increased from 12,000 to $73,000 while tho number of arrests for drunk enness in the city has increased from 223 at tho passago of tho Maine Li quorLaw to nearly 1,000. In 1870 there wero 322 arrest for drunkenness at Bangor; in 1872, 417; in 1874, 013; in 1878, 704; 1870, 770. This is a sad commentary on tho operation of tho Maino Prohibitory Law, and ono that should warn us to pauso and reflect ero wo stain our own statute book with a similar piece of legislation.

Properly of I lie C'lly of Purls. Tho property of the city of Paris, which comprises all buildings devot ed to public use, ii estimated at'ouo milliard and fifty-two millions of francs Tho total number of these edifices is 700, a-mong which are included tho Hotel do Ville, valued at 27 million francs; 20 official residences of Mayors, about 2 million francs each; 76 churches, templc8and synagogues, in which St. llochc figures for 10 millions, St. Germain l'Auxerrois for 12 millions, tho Madelaino for 11 millions, and St. Sulpico for .0 'millions.

Among tho educational buildings are a vast number of schools and colleges, such as tho Lyceo St. Louis, valued at 0 millions, the College Chaptal at ca. 7 millions, the Turgot School at 3 millions, together with a great many primary schools, somo of them estimated at a million each, ono group indeed, in the Rue Servan and the Avenue des Amandicrs, being valued at 1,918,000 francs. Among the items are included the barracks, public- of fices, markets and bonded warehous es, thoso of Bercy being valued at over 30 millions, and thoso of the Quai St. Bernard at 27 millions.

In the smaller category figure tho mon uments, fountains, basins, in the several squares and places. At Waterloo, tho Dry Run, which crosses this city, became suddenly overflowed by a heavy rain which has been general in this sec tion. As the first and second wards were speedily under water, dwelling houses and all Linds of property were endangered and the fire, department worked heroically in rescuing prop erty and saving life. Tho railroad track of tho Burlington and Cedar Rapids Northern was soon 3 feet under water for a distance of 500 feet. The water was nine feet deep on the floor of the Congregational church, and three feet deep on the Opera House floor.

Tho water subsided nearly as suddenly as it came. Two boys, Fred Sicberling and young Merwm, and a girl, name unknown, were diwncd. Damage to property $250,000. Reports from neighboring towns state that damage has been sustained on account of the weather and floods, The Vice Commercial Agent of the United States at St. Marc, Ilayti, informs the Department of State that dry goods of American manufacture are being imported throughout the republic on a largo scale, rapidly driving out British manufactures, so much so indeed, that agents from England aro being sent out to the West Indies to try and regain their lost market.

The Ilayticns arc predisposed in favor of American goods. Four years ago American dry goods wcro scarcely known in tho Island. The provisions consumed aro from the United States. Tim first colored juror ever on duty at Atlanta, was on Wednesday last made foreman, and tho jury convicted a colored man who was charged with burglary, Tho next colored prisoner, charged with murder, objected to this juryman of his own color, much to the amusement of tho spectators, and it is said that the summoning of intelligent colored jurors in tho State Courts is gen erally approved. Tub deaths in New York, week before last, reached tho frightful aggregate of 1,207 about ono person in 050 of tho population.

Heat and filth aro responsible for this terrible, rate of mortality. There aro but few places en the continent whore naturo lias dono more to insure tho long life of residents than upon Manhattan Island, and there aro but few places where man has done more to invite discascjind death. Ik Virginia is tho "mother of statesmen," wo suppose on account of Hancock's nomination, tho Democrats will claim IVnnylvnia as the "Pa." past flscr.1 year, ending Juno 30, throughout tho United States, $31, 032,519 worth of postngo stamps, stamped envelopes and postal cards. This Is an increase of 13,500,000 on tho quantity used during tho previous year, The greatest increase has been in tho matter of postal cards, 2,753 000 worth having been used during the last fiscal year, 12,217,070 for tho previous year. ii Thk immigration at tfto port of New York for tho first six months of 1672 stood at tho highest flguro of tho past twenty-five years until this year.

But tho total for tho first half of 1880 is 10,000 in excess of that for 1872, standing at 177,000, which is three times tho number of thoso who camo during the sumo period of last year. Acconnixo to tho assessments of personal tuid real cstato in New York city for purposes of taxation, there has been an increase in value since 1870 of $50,000,000. Tho increase is nearly equally divided between personal and real cstato, and furnishes a most gratifying indication of tho solidity of the recent advance in real cstato values. Tub population of St. Paul, by the now census, is a gain of 21,007 in ten years.

Accokdinq to a criminal who has applied in Pennsylvania for a pardon there is a horse thieves' union in ttle United States, extending as far south as Georgia and as far west as Indiana. It has seemed for some time as if tho frequent and successful robberies of Northern stables and barns would be impossible unless through a combi nation of trusted neighbors and work men and thieves from a distance. The EuBor-KAN Powers have ad dressed a collective note couched in rather strong language to' the Government of Morocco, demanding that religious and civil liberty be granted to all people residing in that country. The French Chamber of Deputies lave agreed to amend tho 'amnesty bill by excluding from pardon all communists who have been sentenced for common law offenses. It is thought the Senate will concur in the bill as amended.

The Republicans of Alabama pro pose to run a Republican Legislative ticket in the Northern part of tho State, but in the Southern portion they will vote for the independent Legislative candidates. The election takes place in August. W. II. Vaxdehbilt, it is at last announced authoritatively, pays for bringing the Alexandrian obelisk over.

Ho stipulated that it should not cost over 75,600. The thrifty fellow saves that much every year, it is said, out of thepersonal property tax. The "doctors" and tho "professors" who arc engaged in lightening the burdens of society and tho purses of their hearers have ono exclamation that fjcrves the same purpose in temperance speeches that the cypher does in arithmetic, it fills in the place? where there is nothing else to go, and it is used as frequently as the slitto marks in. a grocery bill or a to- lephone the first week after it is put up- This exclamation is "the growing i'vil. of intemperance." Now, this progressive development talk may do very well to work in an exclamation point, or as a top-rail on a fence where tho orator sits down, as it were, to think, not that we mean to accuse temperance orators of wc aro only trying to in- "troduco our subject but as a matter of serious fact it will be found to recede from the light of investigation.

No man who has read anything more ancieltt than yesterday's associated-press dispatches will, in his right mind, say anything about "the growjng evil of intemperance," for it don't grow but is actually dwindling away. Less than a century ago men, after dinner, finished not their drink, but their bottle of port or sherry or brandy, or what- ever it chanced to be and on special occasions a man was degraded in the eyes of his fellows if he couldn't get away with at least three bottles of assorted liquors without being i "floored." Read for illustration, the account of Lord Brougham of his own drinking while yachting among the western islands at the beginning jf this century: "Yesterday our mess fell off, Campbell and I and two natives set into it, and among four had twelve fort bottles; the natives and I3ob Ing stowed away, I finished another bottle and a half of port with an old exciseman, major of tho volunteers. went to the moors, walked it off, and killed a brace of hares at one discharge." Now, who is there in existence today, who canjierform any such drink-ink feat as that? But it wasn't a feat in those days, it wasn't really worth mentioning. Brougham never drank to excess; ho was ono of tho most abstemious men of his times, even on rare occasions he seldom drank over five bottles port at the outside, not counting, of course, the three or four bottle of claret used to wash down the port, to take the taste out of his mouth, as it were. The above is only one illustration, and wc have, chosen it because we preferred not to tuko an excessive drinker, but to give a fair illustration -of the dunking habits of a century ago.

The literature of the eighteenth century is full of drinking that would lay out the entire population in America at otic sitting and Gabriel would lmv nobody left to listen to his eon-wt but a few surviving MM with 10 16i 181 20 28 25 30 21 17 23 0 10 10 II jo 10J 15 1 11 20 10 50 00 42 53 80 75 1 00 8 15. 4 5 12 25 18 ,30 3 75 8 00 3 75 8 10 13 15 18 7i 10 8 12 25 50 60 00 40 45 50 (K) 00 75 1 00 00 70 75 0 60 75 60 00 1 00 28 30 8 'JJ iu Concentrated Lyo, eoncentritte Saugc, Fitsburgh box 3 75 Greenwich 8 75 3 75 8 75 American Knglo l'acilic Riee, 9fci3, Carolina lb Louisiana" Raisins, common, yioiuicn, gciuotjuiwjc ouiiana Currants, itovintljeit Prunes, Turkish, tilrlifoje 95floumen Almonds, -JDtanbctn Lemons, aitronen Aoi Oranges, SJpfcIftnett Teas, Japan common, 21) geroiiljnlid) A fair leaf, inittcl new season" neiiet Gunpowder, good medium, mitte fomoia first moyune. btite It'aljl IK) IK) 1 oung liyson, good meuium, mitici first movuno. befit Sl'obl Oolong, coarse famosa, grpb 40 40 rair itmifi famosa famofn tine first (due bcitc SW 0 I tt lit 1 1 1 tu tie CugroiJ xeit Ijabeu fid) in Kanfafl (it biudjfdjiiittlid) gcljnllen unb bas (tfd)Sft roar fcljr Icbljnft.
