Dave McKain is the target of the temperance warriors, and although the battle is fierce, and the combatants eager, it is hard to tell how it will result, as it depends on one of those uncertainties, a justice's decision. Whittaker, the colored West Point cadst, has been found guilty of self mutilation and placed under arrest. The charges have been drawn and will be forwarded to the president for approval. This action is but the finishing up of the whole scheme to put Whittaker out of the academy. The ofacera of that institution hare been guilty as the cadets, inasmuch as they have had knowledge of the deviltry going on. This is a fitting finale, and well becomes a set of upstarts who are fed and clothed at government expense and who ape the style gnd manner of an aristocracy.

Ex. HOT SHOT. A Little Plata Talk with Oct Bailaeas Iieu ud a Little free Advertising far Oar Neighbors. We have been urging upon our business men the necessity of our haying a better market at this place for grain and produce. Pour times the amount ol goods might be sold by our dealers if the produce of our farmers would bring the same pnoe nere mac it aoes eisewnere.

Why corn should be worth from four to six cents a bushel, wheat from five to ten cents a bushel, butter two to five cents a pound, and eggs two to five cents a doaen less here than at Peabody, Florence, or Hlllsboro, is a matter we are unable to explain. That this is a lact is proven every day, right before our eyes, by our neighbors taking their produce liicsc jjum'a uifiLcau oi bringing here, although they my have Iroai two to five miles farther to travel. longer ago than last week two of our citizens were in Peabody, and there noticed at the depot, a large shipment of butter, eggs, and dreased poultry, for some point in IJew Mexico. Coming homo by the Way of Florence, they noticed at the depot there, a large lot of butter aud eggs consigned to partiej in Denver, Colorado, which had teen shipped from Hlllsboro, while Marion Suds no better market for this produce than that eupphed within the limits of the county lines. The little town of IJUUhoro, containing about one hundred inhabitants has bought and so much more wheat than has Marion Centre, that we are ashamed to give the figures.

On Monday last a load of corn was being weighed at this place when a citizen stepped up and enquired, 'flow much do you get for your corn "Twenty rents." "Who gets it?" 'G- Campbell of Peabody." A3 this man drove off the scales anotber drove on with a load of corn, when the same citizen said to him, "IJank, how much do you tret for your corn "Twenty cents a bushel. "Who gets UP" "These grain buyers, here." This is an actual lact. Mr. Campbell can pay three cents per bushel more for corn, delivered at this place, than our own dealers, and we venture to say that be makes money in the operation We are not writing this with any ill will towards our grain buyers, or other business men, but as a matter of fact, and ope worthy the consideration of every person interested in the growth and welfare of pur city. We will also state that there ia one business house the city which mikes a point in handling butter and eggE, acd gives the producer all there is in it; but one house can pot handle all the farmer has to sell, or make a success of his speciality, without the hearty co-operation of his mercan tile neighbors.

We hope tbi3 matter will engage the serious attention of our business and steps be taken to change the program before it is everlast ingly too lata To the businesa man of our sister towns we woul4 say, no ia, gentlemen, you are fighting a good figh and uVn't you evei give up, The Lord helps those who help themselves, and don't you lor-. ft. Koted visitors last week Judge John W. Williams, of Marion Centre, gave us a friendly call while here. Bonham, the the lightning rod man of Florence, paid his respects Saturday and Sunday, and the Messrs. Frank Poster, Taylor Kiddle, and Mr. ex all of the Hub, passed through Sunday, but did not forget to come and see us.

Pracht Sieker's hardware store was again broken into, Friday sight. They robbed the morey drawer of eight cents, obtained four or five pocket knives out of the show case, and attempted to get into the safe by punching a hole through the side with a crowbar, but gave it up as a bad job. Entrance to the house was gained by forcing open the front door. We will get relieved from burg lary when some one gets hurt. Wheat is still coming in lively, to this market, Harvest will begin in earnest in an other week.

Phenicie had bad luck last week. He went to Peabody with Klever's runaway team, and the ponies thought they would have novae fun, which they did, by running away, upsetting Phenicie, eggs, butter, and chickens, all in a mass. John was a sorrowiul looking object when he got home. Eggs and butter mixed up with chicken feathers all over him. Incidents of the fracas as related by a bystander: When the pistol was drawn, Klever made a dive into a barrel ot hominy, with his feet sticking np.

He afterwards bought some camphor for hi3 neck, say ing he had the mump3. Joe upset him self into a barrel of beans, feet, hands and head up together. The squire tried to get iinto a box of seeds, under the counter, but the lid would not go down, so he was not out of danger. Charley reached for the top of the shelves, drew himself up and hid behind a box of pills. Saylor and Bob fell oyer a match laying on the floor, and stopped np the doorway, while Ben fell over both ot them and looked under the door to see how the fracas wa3 getting along.

Bill was fastened up in the croquet box. Sounds were heard issuing from that direction, when some one remembered seeing him go in the box, hastened to his relief and unfastened the catch, when he was pulled out with difficulty. Business seems to revive up a little, since wheat is again coming into mar ket. Westward Bound. The following characteristic letter from Jacob Brumbaugh was received too late for publication last week, but in order to keep track of him in hia travels we give the main points, which will bo followed up from time to time Uetwpeu Podge and Spearville, May 31.

We left Peabody, Tuesday the 35th, westward bound, traveling through beau tiful fields of wheat and corn, going into camp on Turkey creek. It Btormed all night and rained by tbo car load. Wed nesday morning the creek was bank full. Ljeft camp at noon, traveling through beautiful fields of wheat, topped oyer night" with an old farmer. Thursday, 27th, reached Stone Corrt.1, on the little Arkansas river, at 10 o'clock.

The river was too high to ford. Stopped at Hock station and got dinner, drove two miles to the bridge on the Iyons road, Reached the city at sundown, and put up at the hotel. Was that way inclined because it was kept by a nice widow. We put on considerable style, as mountain bound plugs would, Friday, the 28th, we started for Great Bend Crops in this part of the eountry look bad. Got into the city at 6 o'clock.

It was raining and we stopped at the hotel, Saturday, the 29th, sUi ted for Lamed, which we reach ed about 4 o'clock, and went into camp two miles west of the city, intending to stop until Monday, but Sunday noon we broke up camp and moved as tar west as etlleton In this part of Kansas there is nothing growing and things look des olate. You can see nothing green but buffalo grass, Monday, 31st, started westward for Dodge City, No pasture in this section. Since the above was in type we have another letter dated Granada, Col-, June Cth, saying they reached that place that evening, after having' traveled over a desert scope of country since writing before. The valley of the great Arkansas is dotted over with herds of cattle.
