Last night mother earth was visited by a refreshing shower of oyer two hours duration. This, we think, insures the crops in Marion county. As we go to press the atmosphere i3 quite cool, and indications are for more rain. Chas. Jetmore, slipped up to Osage City and captured one of their belles, returning in possession of his prize on Monday evening.

We sympathize with Osage City in- their recent losses in this respect, but feel glad for Marion Centre. Under the care of C. H. Thompson we visited the track of the Driviug Park Association of this place, and wa3 surprised to see that so much had been done in this matter. The track bids fair to be one of the best half mile tracks in the state, and the Association has doae much towards developing the horses at this place.

We hope some arrangements will be made this season whereby we will have a grain market at this place which will amount to something. The season is dry, we know, but there always bas been grain to sell here, and there will be this fall, and the only way to market it here, is to pay as much as can be obtained in any of our si9ter towns. Roberts, died at the residence of W. H. Roberts, just west of this city, on the morning of the 17th. Mrs. Roberts had been a resident of this vicinity for Eix-teen years, and held the esteem of a lare circle of friends who deeply feel her loss, and sympathize with the grief stricken family.

Mrs. Roberts was sixty-four years old, the fourth day of the present month. When a person once becomes satisfied that he has been mistaken, we like to see him come ont like a little man and own the corn. The subject is hardly worthy of discussion, we know, but from facts in our possession we have concluded we was mistaken, atd weald apologize to the Presiding Elder for placing him before the public in a wrong pssition. Case. G. L- Huey, formerly of Florence, has gone into the bakery business, at Canton. Passenger trains commenced running twenty-five miles west of McPherson, on Saturday. Our city will present a fine appearance when the walks are completed on the side streets.

Butter, eggs, or other produce will be taken at this office, on subscription, at market prices. Chas. Grimes has recovered from bis recent illness, and is again at his post in our public school Mr. Pracht, oi Hillsboro, offers an additional reward of $100, for the apprehension of the safe burglars. Mr.

File is once more sole proprietor of the Florence Herald, Mr. Madden having retired. Ta ta, Johnnie. Widmeyer has a new lot of Hull's vapor stoves. They are very highly recommended by those who use them.

The Peabody baud is composed of a fine set of fellows, and they render excellent music in aa excellent manner. J. Brickley, has beautified his residence to the extent of a handsome fence and a substantial stone sidewalk. A. B.

(Salisbury has been extremely fortunate in eeeuring the services of Mr. Kellison in his dry goods department. It Is now nip and tuck between mad dogs and rattlesnakes as to which shall deserve moat attention from the local papers. We are pleased to see Mr. Boweron, on our streets again.

Though considerably jammed up he is in a fair way to re-coverey. The Social Circle will meet at the residence of Mrs. Wm. Kellison -n Tuesday evening next. A general invitation is extended.

Frank McGhee, a Florence lad, will not jump on moving trains any more until he recovers from the effects of his last effort. Funk Brothers will soon have new and improved machinery In their mill, and then they propose to make flour that can't be beat. "Bay Battler" presents some good ideas to our readers this week. That Fourth of July point was well taken and we second the motion. The Newton races will come off on the 25th, 26th and 27th of this month.

The purses amount to $795, and an in teresting time is anticipated. Billy Bates has a cozy little room between his grocery and the hardware, where he will dispense ice cream and slch, durine the hot months. Hillsboro i3 gaining quite a repu tation on account of the number of thefts com committed there. On Tuesday some one stole a lot of wheat out of a car. Mr.

Branson is here, bag and baggage, with a large stock of groceries, boots and shoes, which he i3 opening out as fast as possible, in the Kellison store room. Wheat ii short, but well headed out, and a good rain, in the near future will insure a good crop. In fact, we have been told by good farmers that it will fill anyway, but perhaps not so well. This week has been notable for movea ble events. Mr.

Harrison has moved in to bis new residence, Mr. Buford into-the house vacated by Mr. and George Glover Into the one vacated by Mr. B. Baker Moreland, of Marion Centre, have purchased twenty-live feet of frontage on Santa Fe avenne, from S.

G. Brat-ton, for $450, and will open a saloon building on the premises. Burlingame Chronicle, A. H. Miller, trustee of Liberty township, says his roll shows 1,701 inhabitants In that township, and thinks that at the present rate of increase, the census enumeration In Juae will reach Good or Liberty.

Rockwell Sexton, the Peabody foan-drymen, are filling a long felt want la this county. Tbey are both experienced mechanics, and are turning out work which elicits much praise. They speak for themselves in another column. While John Bruce and his wife were planting corn, the children got some matches and set a fire in the stable and corn crib, burning eight hundred bushels of corn, a good horse and harness, and a board stable. Loss about $300.

On Saturday we had the pleasure of meeeting many old acquaintances from Peabody, and the founding of new ones. We cannot at present recall all the names, but among them were Messrs. Pkatt was born in Bradford county, Pennsylvania, in 1841 moved to Livingston county, with his parents, when four years old. He volunteered in the United States army In 1861, serving his country until August, 18C5. He became a member of the Christian church when fourteen years of age, and was an active member up to the time of his decease. He was married In Ottawa, la 18G6, moved to Dallas county, Iowa, in 1867 and to Kansas in 1S71. Since his residence hera he commanded the respect of all who knew him, serving for several years as clerk of this township.

He died in this city, May 11th, 1880, in the 38ih year of his age, leaving a wife and six children to mourn the loss of a husband and father. Saturday evening, a3 the east-bound freight was takiog the side-track at this station, which is their meeting point with the mail going west, the brakeman at the switch saw a small boy sitting on a brake beam, beneath a box car. Knowing he had been discovered ihe boy left his perch as soon as possible and struck out on foot. The conductor waB informed of the circumstance, and the passenger train held here until deputy sheriff Smith, after an exciting foot race, captured the lad and had him cared on the back track. Two lads were reported as having bid farewell to McPherson, without the consent of their parents, a short time before, ard this was one of them; the other was caught at Canton.

Frank Bower, the "Nasby" of this city, is certainly the right man in the right place. During the ten or eleven years he has performed the dutie3 pertaining to hl3 position, he has kept himself well informed, to the most minute detail. Besides his qualifications as to technicalities, he add that of the gentleman, which never fails to have its weight in a community. Feeling that the increase of business demanded increased facilities, he this. spring added a large number of boxes and lock drawers, all new and neatly arranged.

Last week he removed the office into more commodious quarters, and will soon have one of the best arranged offices in the south-west. Long live Frank Bower seu the Marion Centre post office. Soldiers' The meeting was called to order by the president, J. K. McLean.

The mir? utes of last meeting was read and adopted. C. W. Miller, from the committee on constitution and by-laws made a partial report which was accepted and the committee instructed to continue its work and report at the next meeting. Upon motion the executive committee was made the examining board to investigate the rights to membership of those applying for the same.
