That paper has been a little more discreet shice we gave it that rubbing down. 1-0 to address oursllf to the Republican. Under the caption of" business money-credit" that paper says We showed that the activity of money was of more importance than its volume. And right hero is a good place to say that the facts which have taken place since we began these ai tides prove the virtue of our proposition. Money has not had its volume increased to at.y appreciable extent, but it has become active.

It has not been an increased a-mount of currency that has almost doubled the price of corn in this lime and added one-fourth to the price of wheat and advanced the price of cattle and hogs." The Republican laid down the proposition some time ago that the volume of currency has nothing to do with prices. It lays great stress how ever 011 the activity of money. Just what is meant by the activity of money it does not sav, but we piesiimc it must mean the rapidity with which it transfer? itself from the hand of the farmer to the mortgage holder. The idea, Mr. Republican, that the volume of money has nothing to do with prices isttoo preposterous to receive respectful consideration.

If the Republican's proposition were a true one it would be worse than felly for this government to spend millions annually for the purchase of gold and silver bullion for the coinage of money. Instead of having $20 per capita (which we haven't gotas a circulating medivin why not have $2 per capita as such medium and thereby save the purchase of the $500,000,000 of bullion and the expense of coining the same into money? The $2 could get a move" on itself and get around just as spry" as could $20, and as the activity of money is all we want we sec no sense in being bothered with 20 dollars. The fact is that there must be a certain volume to money before it can move spry" or any other way. There is now about 10 dollars per capita in circulation. Remove of those dollars and what ill be the result.

Simply this. Debts that wete made when the 10 dollars were in circulation will fall due and no man can raise the money to meet his dcmanJs. A general stagnation will set in and in less than 90 days the the whole country will be plunged into the vortex of fina ncial ruin. need bring 110 proof to substantiate this statement. The proposition is clearly self evident, and no one not even the Republican would think for one moment of contracting the currency to the 2 dollars per capita point.

Now, Mr. Republican, it is a very poor rule that won't work both ways. If the contraction of the currency from 10 to 2 dollars c-apita would have such a tad effect on the business of the country, would not an cxpsnsion of the currency have a tendency to make things better? We quote again from the Republi can We showed that money on a good such as the world has approved from time immemorial, is the sort of money to have for all legitimate business purposes. Trade in all lines will be in a healthier condition under such a monetary system than tinder any other. It will recover from temporary obstruction more quickly under sch conditions than when the value of a dollar" is a problem which no fellow can fund out, as under any scheme of fiat" or of ild-cat' Let us examine this proposition a From 1S62 to 1S73 the value of a dollar as a problem which no fellow could find out." Despite the high ffown theories of political economists and financiers, the experience of the past has demonstrated that the larger tlu per capiti circulation the more prosperous the country, 7herc money is plentiful, though prices may be high, there is always prosperity for the laboring people, and through prosperity, good times for all classes, while the amount of money in circulation in the U-iiited States is comparatively large, tt is nut as large as it should be.a It can be doubled ith great advan tage to the masses, however, it might be with the gold bugs and millionaires. Congress has legislated in the interests of the lat'cr classes long enough, and should now do something for the people. Give us more money. Hutchins.tn News. An Editor's Life.

who voted for the act should have been relegated to oblivion. And the shrieking should have been renewed with vigor when congress passed that act in 1866 authorising the cremation of greenbacks the money in which the soldier, had been paid. IJy this act our government was compelled give an interest- bearing bond a r.on-interest-bear- ing.greenback and the latter was con signed tc the tlames. More shrieking should hae been done when congress passed the cred it strengthening act of 1869. IJy this act bonds that were payable in legal tender notes were made payable in gold, thereby placing another premium on that product and throwing millions mote into Wall Street.

The shrieking this time. Mr. Republican; should have amounted to. an Indian war whoop. And once again thc people could have si.

licked to pretty good "advantage when thc national debt was refunded in 1870. The government has already paid millions of dollars premium cn its own bends because of this infamous act of 1870. And yet again there should have been shrieking when silver was demonetized in 1 S73. ar.d another premium placed cn geld that the holder thereof might add still more to his ill-gotten gains. And then when thc v.hcle thing culminated in that contemptible farce of 1876 the shrieking should have been loud enough to rahc the dead if such a thing ere possible.

Just thiidc of it.
