It is called for the purpose of impressing the prohibitionists with the idea that the party can, and will ba the temperance.party, and ultimately the prohibition party, and thus keep them from breaking away; while leaving the antis to infer that the party need not be feared on the score of prohibition, and thus keep them from breaking away. It is not faithful to either idea; does not repre-senteither, and will attempt to deceive both. Its great aim is to relieve the republican party from taking sides cm the great question of prohibition, either with honest prohibitionists asserting the hitherto unheard-of right to control the citizen in the matter of what he shall take as food or beverage, or with- honest democrats openly and squarely denying that society has any such' right. The republican party is the lever to moving, and has been the means of accomplishing so much is The executive committee of the Anderson congressional committee met at Clay Center a few days ago, and decided not to accept the proposition submitted by Judge Wilson, that botn should withdraw from the race for congressman. This is as it should be and as we firmly believed it would be.

Anderson could under no circum stances condescend to such a compromise. It would be admitting himself on the low level of Wilson, which admission would forever darken the future of the brightest and best man in the Kansas delegation. Anderson's committee in rejecting Wilson's proposal did the only honorable thing it could do. C. L.

IUTN0I.D8. Seo'y. vi i hi vi Because we make our own examinations Qf all the false, deceptive and contemptible devices that were ever concocted by knaves of fools, the Albert Griffin anti-saloon republican movement is the greatest. Instead of anti-saloon republicans, why not invite all persons opposed to the saloon? If the object is to make headway against the saloon, why exert a smaller influence by narrowing the circle of saloon opponent's when a larger influence could be exerted by inviting all to participate who oppose the saloon? The anti-saloon republican movemont is an anti-nothing, in favor of a nothing republican movement. It is fostered by a set of degenerates who call themselves lepublicans, but dare not say what they believe as touching one of the greatest questions of these times.

These miserable mercenaries are neither prohibition nor anti-prohibition; neither for nor against license; without the courage to endorse prohibition they dare not favor any other definite policy; and they assemble in the vague hope of cajoling the people into continued support of the republican party, upon the o.a.b. tue former editor of this paper, and ViMt No. 205. Meets the first and third tins country two years ago. in cne Jirst place two years ago there was not a colored man in the country willing to admit that there would or coitfd be a democratic administration at ington in the year 1886.

Colored men, and nncoiored men, too, had been so long accustomed to seeing republican presidents in the white house that to conceive of a democrat in that mansion required an effort of imagination thev were incapable of. And even if such a marvel as a democratic executive in the white house were possible it never entered the heads of the colored voters that they would be found indorsing him. Had they not been told that they were bound to a republican allegiance by a perpetual gratitude?
