Here it is stated they were placed at Hie disadvantage of having one oi the lines break. The annimul they were driving paid little or no attention to mishap until Howard tried to force liiiu to faster, presumably in order to get over the crossing safely, tie the animal to a hitching rack, and proceed on foot to the depot. The driver tried to check the horse on near Uie crossing, but was unable to do so instantly by the use of a single line, the hor.se mistaking the tightening of I lie line for a pull to one sidd of the track.

In the. meantime the occupants of the vehicle were unmindful -of the approaching train until it bore down oil them. When they discovered the peril of their situation it was luo lata to get across the crossing and a collision was inevitable. An instant later the vehicle was struck and badly wrecked. How the occupants escaped death or serious injury is unknown.

Howard jumped out in time to save himself, while Miss Ethel can not remember positively whether she jumped or was thrown nut of I lie ve kicle. There are rumors afloat that the railroad company could have prevented the accident by bringing the train to a full stop before reaching the crossing Some persons claim they did nut use the uecesaiy precautions and whistle for the several erodings and this one in particular.

Mrs. Wintringer, the National Secretary of the L. T. on her re turn from the National Convention at Denver, says of Kansas: lb. is worth the trip to the magoiflcent state with its sunny skies, pure ozone and broad acres just to travel where a saloon sign close by every etatioo does not disfigure the entrance to city, town, village aud hamlet.

Come to Kansas aud see if the prohibitory law does not prohibit the sale of alcoholic liquor, or as well enforced as the laws which prohibit theft and other crimes. The W. C. T. U.
