A friend holds up to your discouraged eyes the picture of your better self and bids you go on and succeed. If when you are down and out, when your physical and financial condition is at the lowest ebb, then if you find one among the large number of acquaintances who still clings to you, believes in you then call him or her friend, for you can then realize that his or her motive is wholly unselfish.

And if you have a friend then cherish that friendship as the most valued possession that you possess. Only those who know by experience can appreciate the satisfaction which comes with the knowledge that there is one person in the world who you can, from the depths of your heart, call a friend. Colorado Record. Clay Center, Jan. 4, 1911.

I wish to extend my hearty thanks to the order for its prompt payment of my partial disability claim for broken limb. L. P. SCIIRADER. Ask the average man if he has any friends and he will tell you that he has many.

If that were true then he would be richer than a Morgan even if he was living on ten cents a day. But too many people are tempted to call acquaintances friends. There is a distinction as material as there is between day and night. Someone wrote "that he who has one friend is rich, he that has more was worth millions." A friend is one whom, when you are tried by the fires of adversity and failure, stands loyally by you, when slander comes defends Not in the clamor of the crowded street, Not in the shouts and plaudits of the throng. But ourselves, are triumphs and defeat.

Longfellow..
