F. QIBSOX. Kottiiirn Kansas Liukhal A m. 23 Liber M'i is th oaiy I Add ton known in the Unit-d 8 ales, at least theory one that claims to hold no allegiance to God or the DcVil.and bol 1 thir banner liberty to the breene (in their paper), course there are a great many who have often heard of through the press and from the pulpit, and jet know nothing about the morals or habits of the people, and thinking that many cf your readers will never have an opportunity of visiting, to learn from observa tion, and have an anxiety to know something of the town and people, I will undertake to give a few of my observations aBd points of interest gained by inquiry: Liberal, is situated in the western part of Burton county, on the K. Ft.

miles west of Li- mar, the county seat, 25 miles south-east of Ft. Scott, about 325 miles southwest ol St. Liuis, and 125 mil of Kansas City is abou'. five years old and has from 400 to 500 inhabitants, who, though diversified In their opinions on many minor points, are as a unit in the upbuilding of the town and the spreading of liberalism, knowledge and scienc, and for doing away with superstitious myths of ancient times. It's advantages are many as to climate etc.

Soil excellent, with almost inexaustible coal fields ad jacent to the town, affording employ ment to all that want work, at good re-numerative prices. As to the people they are as industrious, enterprising, in telligent and moral as can be found in any town in the West. I have been stopping at the National Hotel, conducted by S. C. Thayer A lady.

It is a good commodious hotel, and everything is kept clean and neat, and up with the hotels of modern times. The t3wn has a good two story frame school building, with facilities sufficient to accommodate all the (chool children in the district. They have no church, bnt instead a very good frame building cal'ed Universal Mental L'bertv Hall, in which all nominations are invited to come and preach, all lecturers to occupy for mrl or instructive lecturing. I have been here for more than a week, mingling with the people.and making inquiry, and have not heard an evil word said by one of another, have not heard of an un-chased woman in the town, not a saloon or any drunkeneBS, for they don't alio -v either in their town. They have, generally, three entertain ments each Sunday, the forenoon given to the instruction of the children, the m.

lectures, debate, criticisms, etc, I at tended this evening, and heard a very able and moral lecture upon improve ment of the mind, cultivation cf good feeling and broihtrly love, and a greater amount of c'mrity, by II, Walser, also the same subject by C. W. Stewart re marks oi Spiritualism by Mr. Tisher. 8 jiritualism has quite a hold on the minds of some-here.

Their evening entertainment consists prirc'pally as a literary, speeches, reel tatiors, declamations, dialogues, criticisms, interspersed with music and everything calculated to make it edifying and attractive. While their criti cit rus are very sharp and jointed, they are given and received with the under standing that all have equal rights to in dividual opinions, and expressions, and i.l ires off haimonious. In fact, the chief characteristic cf the people of Lib eral.are that they believe in progression and they read and study and try to in- rm themselves upon facts to the exclu sion of fiction. herwise tee people or Liberal are possessed of the same characteristics of the other members of the human family, As to the tt rits of general seperaton, free lovensm asm Indiscriminate con duct, otherwise, thera is not a shadow of truth, and not a people on earth more circumspect. AU, seemingly to realize that owing to the name of their tiwn and announced views, they are a target the critic'sm of the world.

Gibson, C. H. Inglefield, C. furner and John Lee started to Topeka last Sunday to hold a conference with the Santa Fd officials in relation to ex tending that railroad into this county they will be home to-day, and will be able to inform our people definitely what that company intends to Graphic- It is to be hoped the Santa G). will finish the Howard branch to the State line.

It will add much' to all the towns slang the road. A delegation cf Chautauqua men started Sunday evening for Topeka to consult officials of the Santa Fe Compa ny in regard to the proposed lines oi rai'road to be built through lb at county, Some of them have returned and report that the company agrees to construct 70 miles of railroad in the county ou line running from Independence through Sedan, Wauneta and Cedarvale, west ward, and the otber an extension of their Howard branch southward through 8e dan and on to the Terri' ory line. Chau tauqua county is asked to vo'e $100,000 in county bonds on condition that the roads are in miming order by Sept. 1880. the company to forfeit $50,000 if they fail In the fullillmeut of their part of the contraet.

He informs na that Severy is making soma improvements this sum mer. Eureka Messenger. The County Central Committe met ft Eureka on Thursday, August 27, '85 The county Republican couventiou to nominate officers for the various county offices will be held at Eureka, October 8 1885. The primaries will be held on the Gth of October. In this weeks issue appears the an nouncement of Mr.

J. D. Shaw, of Madi' son, as a candidate for the office of Regis ter of Deeds. Mr. Shaw is an old resident of our county, and a staunch Republican, and, if he receives the nomination, will make a strong race, and if elected will make an acceptable officer.

On Saturday last a special election was cilled to determine the question, shall our Township Biard sell the Blo tb'a township holds in the St. Louis, Wichita and Western R. R. for ten cents on the dollar?" The election was called for to day, but on the assembling of the board, so much dissatisfaction was manifest that the Board concluded not to hold the election, and made a new call for September 28, 1885. The democratic appointed the Sev ery postoffice, L.

L. Slater, of Fall River, has lived and now lives without the delivery of the office and in another town ihip. The Journal thinks the democra cy of Severy and vicinity is in bad shape when, out two hundred men, one cannot be found capable of being poetmaiUr A "boes" at Washington is what played the dickense with them, Severy demo crats should have etood in with the "boss." El Dorado Times They thought they had the boas," but, like the Irishman's hVa, when they thought they had him bard they didn't. For the intcrsBt of the public who are interested in the county bend suit, we would say that as to the defendant, Mr. William Martindale, the issue is made by his denying all the al'egations in the petition in said casrs.

The defendants, H. C. Cross and L. Savery, have demur red to the petition, and moved the court to dismiss the case for want of jurisdic tion. Mr.

Martindale demanded a tr'al of the case at this term, but the county refused to try it now, and the court dead 3d to continue it until after the mo tion and demurrer of the other defend ants are disposed of. Eureka. Herald. Considerable interest is being awak ened among the children of the in connection with the procuring of a bell for the Southern Kansas Acidemy The bell, which is to weigh 2,000 will be divided into half pound sbfr-'B, and will cost 20 cento per ponnd, so the contribution of a dime will secure a share. The teachers attending the Normal Iu stitute give the project their approval, and will do wbat they can to insure its success.

Handsome certificates of own ership in the bell will be issued to all stockholders. Mr. R.Tomlinson, Dear Sir: I ob serve an article in the Ust issue of the Liberal, strictly bearing the "ear-mark" of its "flimBy" authenticity ov your Initials, accusing me of weakness and uamanliness to yourself and Mr. B'ack, which, as set forth, is unjust, unkind and nc true, and if said article embodied nothing but ftcts," has the au thor of same elevated himself above the condemnation he so anxiously is trying to inforce upon me. And further, if youandyour informant desire a diflerent Impression to the one you claim to posses9, you can verify the same by a gentlemanly conference with me, which in all kindneis I suggest.

But if you do not des're a friendly intererarse, which should have taken place before the writing of your article, and prefer newspa prr perfidy, you are entirely welcome to all the consolation you rai possibly ex tract from that cruras, ever bearing in mind that 'f I shruld not even so much as open my rroulb to reply, yon ahontu not De oil nded should you find ''my true Light," you make men on of with ridicule, at leapt a little if not far beyond your moit intelligent comprehension.
