The fire waa first discovered by some workmen in the garret of the building and they put forth their utmost efforts to extinguish it. Their endeavors were in vain, however, for soon the flames burst through the roof and in a moment the entire top of the building was ablaze.

A general alarm was given to the town people and soon the entire population turned out with buckets. Nothing could be done to save the building however, and it burned rapidly to the ground. The heavy wind served to fan the fury of the flames and render them still more beyond control. The mill stood on the river bank south of the town, and the wind carried the flames to an adjoining cornfield on the north. Considerable corn was burned and also trees, and it was only with the utmost difficulty that the fire was prevented from spreading to the city, as there is no fire department in the town.
