I known person attempted to break into an editor's house recently, but discovered his mistake and escaped before the editor could rob him. As conductor Patterson was punching his ticket a passenger on the Howard Branch said Docs this railroad company allow passengers to give advise, It they do so in a respectful manner? Mr. l'aucrson rcpiicu mat ne guessea so.

en, cominuea vne passen ger, 44 it occurs to mo it would be well to detach the cow-catcher front of the engine and hitch it to the rear of the train. For, von see, we are not liable to overtake a cow, but what to prevent a cow stroll- ng into this car and boo King a passenger?" S. F. Wicker has in his posses sion a picture of the inside of An- a iiersonvuie prison, as arawn dj Felix LaBaurac. It is said to be a true and correct copy of a pencil sketch made by Mr.

LaBaume, while an inmate or that prison, the original copy of which was pro- uuccajnvne inai oi ispu wirx, who commanded the prison. It shows the most horrid scenes of cruelty and savagery and Is so arranged that any one can readily understand not only too arrangements of the prison and the stock ade, but also tho names of the prisoners who were inmates at the time the sketch was drawn. Persons in this locality who were at one timo inmates of that horrid place, assert that the picture is correct and gives a fair idea of the condition or affairs there at that time. Call on Mr. Wicker and see the picture.

The conditions of tho public high-ways of a country, indicates mo degree oi civilization siuunca by the people of that country. Good roads are indispensable to good morals, and are an infallible inacx to inc intelligence oi ioc in habitants. Ministers may preach, and Sunday schools may be organ ized, but if the public roads of the locality are rendered impassable, or nearly so, the average Kansan will tall into wicked habits. There fore we say that apart from the pecuniary benefits and advantages to be derived from good roads, the debasing moral influence ol bad roads alono should prompt us to use every means within our power to improvo and keen in good con dition our public high-ways. The people of this locality are not im moral, they are not mental tm beetles, nor yet arc they poverty stricken, nor lacking in the pride of locality which the horrible con dition ot the roads leading out from town would indicate.

But in the rush of business underneath the wheels of the car of progress, roads have become almost impass able. The late rains bare washed out bridges, that need to be re placed farmers have trimmed their hedges and thrown the trimming into the road, these should be gathered up and burned new fences have been constructed and the old roads fenced thereby making it necessary to travel over new trails, that should at once be worked all of these things combine to make it almost impossible to travel out any distance from town. We know this is a busy season witn farmers, yet the circumstances are so urgent that it seems to us a halt should be called and sufficient men and means be employed to immediately repair the public high-ways. Mt lux est. Tho Ladies of Fall River are hereby informed that Mrs.

First Ptgu Wilson County Citizen: Tho Citizen of last week contained an account of the murder trial then in progress in our District Court, in which Hugh Gilliland and his three a. sons, Isaac, josepn ana anarcw, were charged with killing James Harcl erode and Robert McFarland.

The evidence was all in by Friday evening, and after supper, County Attorney George A. Amos, of Al- made a lengthy and able ar gument for the prosecution. On Saturday the jury was addressed -v Hon. John R. Goodin and Jj.W.

Keplinger, and Col. G. P. Smith, for the defense and for the prose cution by T. J.

Hudson and Hon. C. F. Hutchins, the latter making the closing argument. At about 9 o'clock Saturday night the jury retired, and talking over the case and examining the records a short time, a ballot was taken as to the guilt of Hugh and Isaac Gilliland.

Every juror voted: Guilty of murder in the first degree." The decision as to tho two younger boys was not quite so easily made. If wo remember correctly the jury at first stood eight for murder in the first degree, and four for murder in the second degree, but finally decided on the latter. Tho decis ion was reached in less than two hours, and Court being called, the verdict was given and the jury dis charged. On the convening of Court, last Monday morning, Judge Stillwcll granted a motion to set aside the verdict rendered against Joseph and Andrew, and Joseph, then plead guilty to manslaughter in the second degree. In the case of Andrew a nolle prosequi was entered, and ho was discharged.

Shortly before noon Monday, the prisoners were brought into Court to receive their sentence which was delivered by ad re Stillwcll in most impressive language. Under our laws the nominal pen alty for crime of which Hugh and Isaac Gilliland were convicted, is death by hanging, but as our Governors never sign the death warrant, such convicts simply go to the penitentiary for life, and that is tho portion of these two men. Joseph Gilliland was sentenced to the penitentiary for two years. TMoa Caaaty Cltla.a. The Fredonia postoSce has been enlarged and rearranged to accom modatean increasing business.

The timbered hills neighborhood. north of Fredonia, has been having a mad dog scare the past week. Cook Horton left for Carl Junc tion, last Friday. He contemplates engaging in business at that place. The corn goes into the ground lato this season, but there is plenty of time, with a favorable season, to make a gooa crop.

Gen. Dornblaser laid on our ta ble this week some stalks of alfalfa, measuring SO inches in length. He is experimenting with this clo ver, ana says that though the stalks arc rather tough tho cattle cat it up clean. The Coy vi lie folks are some what excited over a project to build a railroad from Burlington thronsh to Cowille. and thence to Fall Hirer or Fredonia.

Our citizens should keep their eves open and examine into all railroad schemes, as it is an undis puted fact that wo need a Kansas City outlet. The Madison News, of a recent dato contains the following timely warning which it will be well for all to heed: "As the time for holding a County Convention to elect delegates to the Republican Stato Convention approaches, the cxpeariance of the past teaches us that the gang in Eureka, familiarly known as the Eureka Ring, will through their own peculiar means, attempt to 44 set up tho Conven tion in the interest of their con temptible clique. Let Republicans and all honest men look to tho in tcrest of the party and the welfare of the entire people and sco to it that the Ring, so beautifully left at the last County Convention, is not allowed to control the Convention. Remember tho voice of the people as expressed in the election of A. W.

Hart, and keep the Ring In fluence out of politics. Eureka Messenger: On last Friday night while Prof. Martin's writing school was in progress. some unruly boys came and made a disturbance. The professor tried to get them to leave and not dis turb his school, but they still coo tinned their rowdysm when Prof.

Martin came down and had the Deputy Sheriff go and arrest them and the next morning four of them had to pay a fine. When in town if you want to save money on -roccries of til L. GILMORE, Editor. Republican Nominations. ForOnTra, 4tk TIIOS.

Exchange: It is possible that the coming summer may be a dry one in Kansas. Our climate has a tendency in that diretion. It is well known that deep plowing makes the soil moistcr. Cultvat- ing crops with a sub-soil plow will in roost cases lessen the effects of drouth, and in many instances save a crop that would otherwise be burnt up.

Give rs a Call. The Ecno has been sent to a large number of sub scribers for tho past year who promised to call and see us during that period. As there arc a great many who have not yet called and we are needing the money it would be a great favor to have them make us a visit at once. Come in and see us, give us the news of your neighborhood and a pleasant re membrance ofyour visit. Xtots in Woodside's addition at from $15 to $90 per acre, by How ard, Fedrick Co.

Howard Courant: During the 'panic" last week wben every body expected to hear of hundreds of banking houses closing their doors, Cashier, T. S. Fuller, of the Howard Bank, was at all times to bo found smilingly at his post, ready and willing to attend to the wants of the public. By the fail uro of Donncll, Laws on Simpson, in New York, the Howard Bank lost a small amount, but in every other quarter their connections were solid. Fuller, Lambert Haines are securing a good class of banking business, and are pleasant gentlemen to do business with.
