THE NEWS-DEMOCRAT TAKE GDuD IIauuisox's veto of a bill granting $200,000 -for the enlargement of the public building at Dallas, Texas, simply shows the sinallness of the man. The demagogue shows itself also in that part of his accompanying message calling attention to the need for more liberal pension legislation. In this, he simply makes a bid for the soldier vote in 1892, the veto furnishing him the desired opportunity. A people who so delight in social bathing naturally make the most of the hot springs which are found in so many parts of the empire, and surround them with quaint gardens and other pretty and characteristic details. And on and on, through villages where crowds of children, and grown-up folks too, were celebrating a quaint mythological festival in such pretty fancif ul fashion as seemed to suggest some fairy tale rather than a page of prosaic life. And then we halted for the night at the charmingly-primitive tea-house of Sengoko-yu in the heart of the beautiful forest, to which water is brought in bamboo pipes from boiling sulphur springs at a higher level, and is cooled in rude but effective baths. One of these was given up to our exclusive use, drained, refilled, and screened in deference to our foreign prejudice, and here we reveled in peace and boiled away all the aches and fatigues of our long day's journey. Then our courteous hostess arrayed us in cool apanese dresses from her own wardbrobe and treated us to an excellent Japanese supper.

On the following morning we repeated the sulphur bath with full appreciation of its merits, and then climbed through the forest to visit the sulphur springs a dreary region where, in a hollow between dark, wooded bills and red bluffs Of crumbling rock, pools of boiling sulphur, alum, and iron, and clouds of steam rise ceaselessly expanse of nrf brren ground, is iesoLVo theTin; curious contrast to the loveli man; an ar0und no vegetation stows the sulphurous pool. Now the Journal man tells Anthony that "his conceptions are base, his instincts degraded, his thoughts impure," and that there lives in Leavenworth "a negro as. like Old Dan in face, form and figure as it is possible to be." Is that possible? Old Dan a miseegenator? Old Dan, the prohibition saint and apostle of virtue, the father of a negro? We hope not, for the negro's sake.
