PIGKLY ASH BITTERS One of the most Important organs of the human body is the LIVER. When it tails to properly perform Its (unctions the entire system becomes deranged. The BRAIN, KIDNEYS, STOMACH, BOWELS, all refuse to perform their work. DYSPEPSIA, CONSTIPATION, RHEUMATISM, KIDNEY DISEASE, are the results, unless something Is done to assist Nature In throwing off the Impurities caused by Inaction oi a TORPID LIVER. This assistance so necessary will be tound in Prickly Ash Bitters It acts directly on the LIVER, STOMACH and KIDNEYS, and by its mild and cathartic effect and general tonic qualities restores these organs to a sound, healthy condition, and cures all diseases arising from these causes.

Having struyod through tho streets lot us now ponotrate Into tho Interiors. The houses aro, roughly speaking, al of the same pattern. Thoy are built round two, or somotlmos three, sides of a garden, with opou arcades from which the room is entered. The stair cases somotlmos rise through the In ner parts of the building, somotlmos in arches in the opon air; and they terminate somotlmos in a corridor with glazod windows, sometimes ia a sec ond arcudo, or in a deep locrgla. As a rule tho wood-work is rude, and the colllngs, un plastered, exhibit a row of rafters, backed by a kind of matting.

Hero and there, indeed, is a house where every lintol and door is carvod, and the colllngs are arabesques of col or; thoso, however, are excoptlons. But tho rooms aro always numerous, large and lofty; and they are con- stontly brokon by graceful arches, which in the scarcity of good timber, holp to support tho roof. The arches, too, which surround the gardens, high, slim, and point ed, are a really beautiful feature, and stamp the sccno with a peculiar archi tectural character. Ihcso houses cover considerable area. One in which si spent several "n'coks, and which in comparative e'izo was moderate even small, had a frontage to tho street of a hundred foot, and a depth of two trundrod; while, one, half in ruins, which I had to explore continually, must have enclosed within its walls something far more than an acre.

Nothing can be imagined richer in quaint vlew3 than the garden thus secured, with the polished sky showing overhead, a tall tower or minaret peering over the walls from a distance. I have said that the classical times left little behind them that was above ground, but they have left something. Here in the gardons, amongst the green gloom of the orange trees, are fountains built out of blocks of antique curved marblo; violets will be growing found a whito Sorinthian capital; or stuck into the ground as a careless border for a flower-bod will be a broken slab with tho letters on it of an Hellonlo inscription; and thus through all ages of history comes a faint echo from a past that is beyond the past Interior. ABOUT HORSE-POWER. Its Application to the Measurement of the Capacity of Boilers.

A srreat deal of trouble has arisen from the application of the horsepower to the measurement of tho ca pacity of stoam-boilera. The boiler is but one factor in the power-producing1 system. It furnishes the force. It is the magazine whore is accumulated and stored the pressure resulting from the conversion of the latent energy of coal into that of steam; but this force requires to be exerted through space against resistance, through the length of an engine cylinder, against the resistance to movement of the piston which it forces, to effect the develop ment of power. Now some engines use steam much more economically than others, and a boiler which could furnish stoam to develop power at the rate of one hundred horses with the best of these might not bo able to do thirty-horse power with tho worst.

Now what is the "horse-power of the boilerf" The capacity of a boiler for developing power depends upon its ability to convert water into steam, To cieet the complications which arose from this cause, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers appointed" a committee to investigate the subject of the commercial rating of boilers, and they adopted as a standard the evaporation of thirty pounds of water per hour from feed water of one hun dred degrees F. into steam at seventy pounds pressure to constitute a horsepower. Some engines can develop a horse-power on this number of pounds of steam per hour, others can not, and many can on less, yet it is the average present practice and supplies a unit with some degree of prestige or authority for the settlement of disputes upon the subject Wood Worker. One of the proprietors of the popular rem edy known as Warner's safo cure, has boon faithfully investigating the cause, and has callod to his aid scientists as well as medical men, impressing uion thorn the fact that there cu not be an effect without a causo. This investigation disclosed the fact that in the olden times simple rcmedios were administered, compounded of herbs and roots, which were crathored and stored in the lofts of the log cabins, and when sickness cume on, these romedios from nat ure's laboratory were used with the best effects. What wore these remedies! What wore they used fort After untiring and diligent search they have obtained the formulas so generally used for various disorders.

Now the question Is, bow will the olden time preparations affect tho pooplo of this age, who have been treated, undor modern medical schools and codes, with poisonous and injurious drugs. This test has been carefully pursued, until they are convinced that the preparations they now call Warner's Log Cabin remedies are what our much abused systems require. Among thorn is what Is known as War- aer's Log (Jabln sarsaparuia, ana they frankly announce that they do not consider the sarsaparilla of so much value in itself as it is in tbo combination of tho various ingredients which together work marvel- ously upon the system. A commuMoation in an evening paper gave a tabulated statemont of the expense of maintaining this corps of voluuteer physi cians here, the cost por man being esti mated at 1)600 per month, or $7,000 for the whole corps of fourteen. The communication took the ground that tho resident physicians could talco care of the sick from now till the epidemic should end, and the writer therefore advocated the discharge of these volunteers from further service. This made thera indignant and they resigned in a body at a meeting held about twelve o'clock Saturday night. They judged erroneously that this anony mous communication was a reflection of public opinion. The sentiment of the com uiunily-strongly condemned this procipi tate action, and lust night they all agreed to attend the patients as usual, the board of health meanwhile to investigate and re port upon the can sea which led to the pub lication of the article roforred to.

Notwithstanding tho settlement of the strike a rather serious conflict occurred this morning about three blocks from the Garnold avenue barns between a mob of strikers and the new men who ere running out cars. The first car was run out and proceeded on its way without event. The next six cars were then run out and had proceeded to Center street when a mob issued from an alley near by ana maue a savage assault upon the new drivers and conductors. Stones and missiles were hurled through the air and several of the mob pounded the new men and endeavored to drag them off the cars.

A hand to hand struggle then ensued. Captain Schaalc was notified of the tronble and he, with twenty-five men, immediately started for the scene. The mob, which had evidently vented its spite ran away when tbe police appeared. Several of the conductors and drivers were hurt pretty severely. The new men say they recognized tho men in the mob as strikers.

Tbe trouble arose through the fact that now men, who were retained were concentrated at tbe QarQeld avenue barns and were the only men running cars from that point The Electoral Count Kill.
