The farmers are going to ride at half fare rates to Cincinnati nnd lots of them art going too! Evangelists Shawhan and Shaver now conducting services here are botli lawyers by profession. Salina has a citizen who picked up a pocket book yesterday containing $50 and returned it to its owner. The report that ex-President Cleveland will visit the west soon is hailed with pleasure by the "mosstiicks." When huuters who go out from Sharon Springs return home they divide with thi housekeepers and make all enjoy the sport of eating if not of shooting. It sometimes takes a long time to still the conscience but every now and then you meet a fellow traveler who has succeeded in the unpleasaut self imposed task. Kansas City is building a now brewery Salina News.

Yes and it is right on the Kansas line and will he kept running by Kansas money Democrat. Tiie people of America say crimo shall be punished and the mob violence of the past few months is speaking in thunder tones to the courts that sit iu judgment. Five cents each from the Kansas school children will make $15,000 for the World's fair fund. It is pretty in sentiment but that is about the largest recommendation of the idea. A good reputation goes a long ways some times.

Take the case of the man Crantz accused of murder. There are many people who knew him who will neverbelieve him guilty of murder and will scarcely believe it after it is proven. Some people never got enough rain, never saw It as cold as some day in the past, and are even 'Hisappointed that the frost didn't kill everything and appear sorry that the entire wheat crop is not destroyed with every appearance of the fly. Such people are afraid to plant a corn crop because the hot winds might blast it iu the ''tawsel." Last Sunday afternoon a party of some half-dozen boys amused them selves with throwing stones and earth clds at a well worn pedestrian on Santa Fe avenue greatly to the annoyance and disgust of better raised people. No policemen was in sight and the boys wore out the sport to their own satisfaction.

It was just such a scene as is pictured by story writers of the slums in great cities. It is a disgrace to Salina. TIKE DUl'AItTjaENT, To Celebrat or not to Celebrate is the Question. The fire department met Friday night in special meeting, being called to order at 8:15 by Chief Jones who stated the object of the moetlng. The first thing consideredwas an invitation of the Jlieloit tire department to help celebrate the Fourth of July in Uue style at that place.

The subject was discussed and the matter i id over until the regular meeting of tho department ou the 29th of May, The reason for deferlng action upon th invitation was the desire of a large majority of the department to celebrate If the proper encouragement is giyen them bv the citizens, of Salina. It is thedesire ol the boys to get upone of the celebrations ever held in western or central Kansas. If they are given the proper encouragement they will get up something very attractive and they will make that day attractive to tho people of neighboring cities as well ai the country people, The question of getting uniforms ws referred to a committee with instruction to get an estimate of cost with a view of getting them. Weekly drill meetings were ordered and a copy of the "Fireman's Book of Tactics" was purchased for the good of the department. NOSUASHINE.

Afilooiny Picture From Over The aters Mr. Oscar Seilz is in receipt of a letter from his brother-in-law Mr. Kothe, consul at Cassels in Germany which gives rather a dark picture of what some people must endure. Among other things the letter states that there has been no sunshine- there siuce Nov. 14 to tho 3rd of April.

Winter wheat is badly damaged and all provisions are high. Vegetation of all kinds failed last year and the country lias subsisted wholly upon imported, wheat, largely from America. Prices are exhorbitant. The reading of such letters makes one forgot the ills of Kausas and acknowledge the many blessings FRIDAY.ftlAY 15, 1891, Railroad limo Card. PACIKIL, M.

It is understood that the Salina Her ald to be issued this week will contain the valedictory of its former able editor, Dr.

N. D. Tobey, and that it will henceforth be made an alliance paper with J. Davis as editor and Harry Tobey manager. The Herald has seen many changes and will uo doubt survive this one.

Its desertion of democracy leaves the Daily and Weekly News the only exponent of the moss grown principles of Jefferson, Washington, Grant and others who left to us an inheritance, the grandest government the world has ever known. The editor of the News has always been a democrat and it is natural to uphold those principles which have sustained this grand government since its formation. We hold to that independence borne in all true Americans and do not make a democratic utterance from partisan motives. Men in high authority need to be criticised be they democrat, republican or alliance. The City Board of Education, Salina Sun.

The new board of education was organized last Monday night, and the following officers elected: C. G. Wil marth, preHldeut; T. D. Fitzpatrick, vice-president; F.
