So the Southern people deteriorate in every way, like their land, yar by year, until, take them as a class in comparison with other people, and tbeir inferiority wjuld be laughable if it were not so pitiful. One cause of the desperate poverty of the laboring classes there is the gro eery stores. The store keeper advances them provisions and seeds, and sometimes farming implements, taking therefor a mortgage on the crop, and then, all through the season, he furnishes pork, calico, at his own prices, always charging double, and at the end of the season takes the crops at his own price weighs them upon his own scales, and it is a rare case for a man to come out even on a years work.

It isn't to the storekeeper's interest to have him coma, out even, for as long as he is in debt ha is in the storekeeper's power, and is not permitted to buy in any other place. It is a unique experience to set a court held there. The judge, jury, prisoners, lawyers and all, lie about in the easiest and most unstudied attitudes, spit rir ers of tobacco juice, and get up horse races after the trial. In Yalhermoso, court is held in an old barn, (Circuit Court it is) and the corn makes beds and lounges euch as the Southern juries delight in. It is a beautiful and interesting sight to see lovely and delicate young girls with little "sweet-gum" snufl sticks in the corners of their mouths, and see the graceful meauderings of the amber juice as it trickles down tbeir chin it is pleas ant to sec little school children with their wagging jaws full of "wax;" but it is the most ennobling and soul-inspiring sight to see fair ladies of golden locks chewing "fine-cut" or "natural and ejecting the spittle with unerring precision into a particular "hollow, down by the glure" in the open fireplace, Josh Billings Telia About the Gosling.

At present writing it seems to be a foregone conclusion that England will soon be involved in a terrif ic struggle with Rnssia that the Lion and the Bear will speedily be measuring powers.

We hope so for several reasons. When the United States was involve ed in a struggle for national life, England gloated over the prospect of a dismemberment of the Republic. Its press and people openly sympathized with tbe enemies of this Government, and predicted the disgrace aud defeat of the Starry Banner, ami the decline and death of the only Republican government on earth. Privateers were fitted out in her ship-yards, and with the prayers aud cheers of Joh a Bull launched upon the waters to prey upon and despoil our commerce. English capitalists declined in qtiish all efforts to please, and become heedless of reproaches.
