A genuine freak was exhibited at the Holtoti fair the other day, in the shape of a sonud, healthy, fully devoloped months old, which has two heads with four eyes, but with only two ears. It eats with both mouths, the Tribuue says, first taking Itay with one and then with the other. It is black iu color and is really a handsome animal. EMBALMER FUNERAL DIRECTOR. 1 A Woodson county tilverite lias tak-au such a serious view of the political situation that he haa entirely repudiated the golden rule. AgricolA ElevatoR FeeD Mill A local weather prophet predicts a long cold winter. Tie says that long campaign speeches are a Mire sign of a severe winter. The melancholy days have come, the saddest of the year, when windy talks on politics on every side we hear: iu every nook around the town the politicians spout, and iu the corner groceries until the lights go out. The Hopper now is pointed out a man to be admired; the Jawstnith shrieks from mom till night and make us very tired.

And rural neighbors who for months have talked about tneir their beans, potatoes, pumpkins, corn, tomatoes, beets and hops, will briefly touch on politics, let slip some fatal word, then there'll be discussion fieree as any heard. It may not go unto the length of pugilistic strife, but all the same that talk will make them enemies for life. The party orators come, the meetings aud parades, aud keep us out of bed all night to near the long tirades; some fiend who's on the other side will do his test to vex by loudly asking questions that a statesman would perplex; short there'll be so many things attention thus to claim that often we will vainly wish election day ne'er came. Cofleyville Journal. Fnll line of FEED including Bit AN, SHOUTS.

W- SIMPSON- Now that paw-paws are ripe, friend Stout is putting more vigor into his campaign for Superintendent of Wood-sou county schools. The hamlet of Iola is highly ho iored by having three or her citizens chosen preaideutial electors by the three great parties. The other five voters of the village have their lightning rods up. Au exchange tells of a man who says he never speut but ten cents foolishly in his life and that was for something to eat. This remind us of the witness who was called up to prove a neigh bor's good character.

He said his char, acter was good, so tar as he knew, except he worked for 'a living. IMSVBTrUL JUSTICE. W. E. CHAMBERLAIN.

Some late county-seat papers have given lucid accounts of how the diamond decked Lara bom is enjoying his six mouths jail sentence iu expiation of HOME BAKERY RESTAURANT women get ttncf on men Who would disgrace a sheep-killing dog by association. In many cases they stick to 'em and humor tnd pet them, when, as a matter or fact they ought to polish them up with the stove poker and break lheir backs when they catch them in a drunken deep. If you will tie up, girls, with one of that Kind of men, it i better that he should bo permanently disabled so that he will be fame and more easily handled. We might moralize here a little. VTe might say to the girls that the man who is mean enough to slight nd niistrcaL yun before you are married will be euro to mistreat you afterward, Such a niun isn't worth living for much less worth dying for.

But we suppose girls will go right along do ing just a they have been doing for centuries past. Woman is rather a queer creature in some respect. That is, some women. Breeze. The Burlington Republican says of the Appellate-Judgeship.

The nominations forjudge of the a p. peltate court of the southern department aiid' eastern division represent better than others the great differ-ance between a reliable, business like, co mm on -sense party like the republican aud an aggregation of half baked financiers and featherheads like the Pops. Judge W. A. Johnson is a man who has devoted his whole life to the study and practice of law and is every-where recognized as an able jurist.

His opponent is a young man with a glib tongue and fine address, but with no legal ability aud experience that entitles him to recognition even as a candidate for county, attorny in bis own county. His supporter say he i a Very lawyer, but the fa-t is that he never had a rase in the supreme court. A man who has practiced law for many years aud never got into the MUprenie court is not very successful, and in certainly not the one wio ought to be elevated to the of judge of at: appellate court. That would be a thousand limes more unwise than to elect a third grade teacher to the office of superiutendeut. The interests of a county do net Huffrr greatly if a superintendent knows practically nothing ami is a failure in office, but the gravest interests of the whole country are at stake iu an election of judges, particularly- of our superior courts.

That is the most important duty that devolves upon the people. We can better afford to have incompetent and illy qualified men in any other public offices than on the bench. From errors made by thetse courts there is no appeal, aud the wronged party has no redress. The men elevated to those positions 6hould be trained aud experienced lawyers Who have the judicial mind, and whose long familiarity with the practice Of the higher courts has fitted them for the duties of such a position. Mr.

Schoouver is anything but that kiud of a- man. Besides his utter absence of legal learning Aud experience he is of an emotional, sentimental disposition, an orator or elocutionist of the Bryan stamp, who travel about over his district attending Populist rallies aud making passionate appeals to the sentiment and prejudices of the people. He is a good fellow and a perfect gentleman iu all personal relations, but that is no qualification whatever for such an office as judge of a superior court. We have too much faith iu the judgement of the people of the seventeen counties iu the southern coiner of this state to believe for a moment thai that will rU-tuti sncli rii able attorney as Judge Jolmfoii mid clet such a young elocutional h- Sei.oonovci to that, next to the niM-t im office in the whole Bread, Pies aud Cakes always on hand. Summer Drinks in great variety. Headquarters for Ice Cream. Opposite Post Offioe. I I'f i I i -t i The Indiana state board of health has issued a strict set of rules to govern the school of that state. The use of slate peucils and dates is prohibited sud pens and lead pencils supply their place.

The floors, windows and wood-work must be washed every day with disinfectants. Open water buckets for drinking are not allowed and no unwashed boy or girl is to be admitted. If these rules were in force iu Kansas it would lie a big step in advance of to- day. The rule prohibiting the use ot opeu water buckets is especially I one of the most henlous crimes known iu the criminal category. That he is jiuilty goes without saying, else, why in prisou? Being guilty, why his crime practically coudoued by a sentence that amouuts to luiply a temporary retirement, surrounded by all the luxuries that his ill-gotten wealth can procure? Is it because the infamous crime was committed iu a luxuriously appointed office rather than iu a hovel? Or may it be that an offence loses much of its henious nature when committed on an obscure individu al by one more prominent in church or social circles.

Whatever may be the causes, the cold fact remains that Lam bom was adjudged guilty of a crime that should rank up close to life-taking, and that a life sentence would illy expiate; and has received a paltry six months sentence with a strong probability of an early pardon. A nation's judiciary is the wardeu of its liberties and when that becomes venal, anarchy is the logical conclusion. Star Livery Feed Stable, T.W.McGRATH, Good II oi 8cs, Good Vehicles. Another Coffey county Democrat has been honored by his party. Wm. Grotty is made the Palmer and Buck-ner elector for the fourth congressional district.

The selection was made by the state committee, which was given that power by the convention that met i Topeka last mouth and elected delegates the national convention at Indianapolis. A. W. Jones was then chosen a delegate to that convention, aud now a second distinguished honor has been confered on Coffey county Democracy iu the selection of Mr. Crotty as a presidential elector.

1 he following interesting article recently appeared in an eastern trade paper concerning the dairy business and Its profits: "Some of the farmers in Maine are realising a good thing from their creameries, for instance, S. H. Beal, of Avon, from the cream of five cows and two 2-year-old heifers; received from the Sandy River Creamery $381. 86; for pork made from the skimmed milk, for pigs sold, $12; pork for home use, $21; total, $470. 95.

De doeting the cost of grain fed, Mr. Beal says bis cows paid him $387. 95. He calls the heifers equal to one co aud on this basis figures $61.65 per cow. Henry Butter Held, a patron of the Sandy River creamery, with four cows, .86 per head.

There are numerous other iustauces with as good or bettea results says the THE WAVERLY GRANITE MARBLE WORKS, Last Saturday night a haodsome but foolish girl iu Kansas City committed suicide because a worthless, drunken hound had slighted aud neglected her. We don't know that there is any partic ular lesson to be drawn from th. It is just one of those sad phases of huraau nature which have never been explained aud never can be: Just why handsome, good hearted girls should fall iii love with men who never were worth half the powder that would be required to blow them to tho perditiou where they belong is something that can't be explained on any reasonable theory. As a rule the men they fall in love with are conceited, rude nu overbearing. If the girl would ever the trouble to figure on the future such a man she must conclude tin would probably have to suppor family after she got him and tak pay in tho abuse of a drunken, iless We have many times that wo man's instinct was I an man's reason, but experiei 1 always seem to prove it.
