Ho did not remember having ever seen the man whose body now lny in the morgue. He did not see what was going on behind him, but beard some shots fired from near him. One of the men had pointed a rifle at him, and while he had hold of the two deputies he had a hard time to keep the others from shooting him. It had been stated by the "assassins" that ho had been drunk on Fridav and he had not taken a drink on Friday and his only object in stopping the deputies was to arrest them. Police Ofliccr John Dowd, of East St.

Louis, corroborated tho above and added that when the deputies got away they flred several shots, and when they got half-way over, the deputies fired a whole volley of shots at them, and ho and the mayor had to take shelter behind wagons until the firing ceased. Witness never saw the man whose body is In the morgue. There were two shots fired from the gathering of which he and Mayor Joyce were a part. There were no other men there except a few bridge employes. Mayor Joyce did not hand a revolver to any one.

Neither the witness nor the mayor had revolvers and It was probably good lor the deputies that they had not. St. Louis, April 18. It has transpired here that a scheme is on foot to boycott the Gould railroads through Eastern manufacturers. District nsseinbly 80, Knightsof Labor, with headquarters in Boston, embraces about 800 local assemblies, with a membership of sonic 40,000 shoe and cotton workers. Large quantities of tho articles made in the territory covered by these assemblies are shipped to points on the Gouid system, and the plan is to notify all mannul'acturers to stop shipping their goods over those roads.

There is to be a meeting ot district assembly 30 at Boston this week to discuss the matter, and if the plan is decided upon and the manufacturers refuse to accede to the demands of the assembly, a strike will probably be ordered of the workers In the territory named. A representative of this district assembly has been in consultation with the general executive and local committees here and will report to the Boston meeting what he learned of the situation here and in the southwest. It is also said that district assemblies 77 and 78, which include the shoe and cotton workers in Maine, New Hampshire nnd Massachusetts, will hold meetings immediately after the Boston assembly and it is thought possible that they will pursue the same course decided upon by that body. Powderly Talks. Scraxton, April 15.

In an interview this afternoon Powderly when asked what he thought of Mr. Gould's reply to his manifesto said: "I have not had much time to think of it for this has been au unusually busy day with me. I don't think, however, that Mr. Gould has answered my letter. His reply is a quibble and an evasion, and he fairly slops over on some points.

All there is in his communication has been said before. He evidently wants to pose before the country In the light of a martyr but the Knights oil Labor don't propose to honor him with martyrdom. We have Invited him to carry his threats of prosecution to -the courts, and we are ready to meet him there. He announced some time ago his intention to commence a series of prosecutions against us, and we want him to proceed at once. We shall not be swayed from our course by anything he may say or do.

Just as soon as possible we shall appoint acommltt.ee of the order to investigate the southwestern trouble from root- to branch all along the line from St. Louis to the Mexican border. The result of this investigation will be published to the world and if the Knights of Labor who struck are at fault they will not be screened. We are anxious, however, to havo a congressional committee investigate the strike first, ascertain the causes leading to It, then make them public without delay. Mr.

Gould acts or rather talks like a man who fears he will be If he should be punished legally for unlawful acts of his that would not be uujustly injuring him. It would merely be upholding the law.
