The trial of William Baldwin for ihe murder of his sister Mary last July has begun in Atchison, the scene of the crime, and promises to be of great legal and popular interest. The killing of the" young lady was peculiarly atrocious and uncalled for, and without wishing in any way to create a prejudice against the defendant in this case, we would yet like to know what would he his fate if he fchoald be declared guilty by the jury. This desire is founded upon no personal interest, only so far as it relates to the law on hanging which disgraces the statutes of Kansas and enables the coldest blooded murderer to live and breathe the justly forfeited air of heaven.

If William Baldwin murdered his sister he did the deed in a deliberate and premeditated manner and from the basests of motives money. Yet if he is convicted of all this he has nothing more to fear than imprisonment for life with hopes of communtation in a penitentiary where there are thirty-seven other blood-stained criminals who are living on the bounty of the state. And another evidence of enlightened clemency and christian charity will be given to the world by a state which claims superiority in every direction over all the other states of the Union. Kansas has enjoyed a carnival of crime daring the past few months, and as her population increases she may look for an increase in the number of her crimes. It is high time that the legislators of the state took serious notice of these things.
