SMITH CENTRE, KANRAS, is the best and cheap-est place to get a square meal at any hour in the day or night, or to buy fresh meat of all kinds. 3 Wo sell all kinds of goods CHEAPER than any other house The crime of Sherwin and Wells is, that they have not chimed in with the unscrupulous politicians of Smith County, and helped to pass the offices around, instead of trying to break the ring and let the people see what is being done. THE DUTIES OF THE HOUR. From what" we have been able to learn thus far, a much larger per centage of the Greenback voters of Smith County failed to attend the election last Tuesday, than of the old party voters. This is not as it should be.

Suppose you had no reason to expeet the the success of the (ireenback "ticket, is that any reason why you should fail to enter your solemn protest at the bollot box against the wild robery of the old parties? The theory, of our government js, that the people are supreme, or that the expression of the people tne law of the land. And the man who don't think enough of his own convictions as to what is right, to go to the ballot box once a year and give expression to his political sentiments, must be lacking in a just estimate of his own inteli-gence. The true patriot should feel it a duty to go to the polls each election day and give an expression, by the ballot, of his political Though the Greenback party has never had a majority in any legislative body yet, it has already wielded a powerful influence upon the financial legislation of this government. But the full measure of justice will never be obtained for the masses till it has full We will have concessions but nothing short of an unconditional adoption of the principles of the party will be lull justice, and this sooner or later must and will come. Let us all i do what we canto hasten the glad day, instead of leaving the burden for, our children to bear.

TWENTY THOUSAND PEOPLE PRESENT AT A BARBLCUE. Cleburne, via Dallas, Texas, Oct. 23. -To-day a grand political barbecue, jointly Democratic and Greenback, occurred at Cleburne, Johnson Co. Senator Maxey and Congressmen Mills and Reagon spoke for'the Democrats, and Congressman Wash Jones and Mayor Thurman and H.

A. Spencer of Dallas for the Greenbackers. Over 20,000 people were present from a half dozen adjoining counties. One hundred corn fed beeves; one hundred fat hogs and hundreds of fowls were roasted. It was the grandest political meeting ever held in this section.

Greenbackers and Democrats are' waging as warm a campaign as if in the midst of a Slate contest. There is no election till November, 1880 Southern Ex. And yet there are those in Smith County, and probably all over the North who say the Greenback question is not agitated in the south. What miserable lying means the old parties do resort to, in order to divert people from the Greenback party. Improvement Enterprise.

With this number we close the campaign series of the Toilkk. We have been hiring it printed, which is more expensiue than we could afford, besides hot being a satisfactory plan as a permanent arrangement. 1 VVe had been in hopes of having arrangements made in time to continue the publication with little or no' intermission, But in the heat a harry of the campaign, we failed to get arrangements completed, so that we will not have our material earlier than two weeks from tii.1, time this issue goes to press. The Treasury being collected funds, it was proposed that the government shouid exercise its lawful prerogative in creating money.

IJut the rich forbid it, and a depreciated currency was created, which was considered good enough to pay the soldier, but the rich man, able tp buy bonds and go into the banking business must have gold. The paper money was good enough to do business with, but there being plenty of it in circulation which rendered the business of money loaning dull, the rich demanded that a part should be destroyed, so as to create a demand for money and bring down the price of property, and when they drew the interest on a thousand dollar bond they could go and buy two acres of land instead of one. But taxes were not reduced. The President was paid a double salary. The rich bondholder was relieved entirely from taxation, while the farmers taes were doubled.

The people were taught the falsehood that it was a necessity, and they generally believed it. Thus they have surrendered, without resistance, billions of their hard earnings to the money lords within tne last ten years. Wake up brethren, be not dream-Dreaming life away; Rouse ye comrades, light is gleam- ing From the coming day." THK WIT 07 A BLACKGUARD I he Republican paper of last week contain a letter from Charley Aldrich, written on the occasion of an article th.it appeared in the ToiLkr two weeks ago under the heading of "Republican Sincerity," in which was stated that Aldrich said in a speech a Cedar Township that he "would rather see the Government of the United States go to ruin under, the Southern Democracy than Hendrick Ii. Wright of made President." We have F. E.

Baker's word for it that Aldrich did use the words quoted above, and a'l who know the two men would believe Baker a thousand times in a joke before they would believe Aldrich with tears in his eyes. Aldrich denies aying what we published that he said, and explanation, claims to have said: "I rath-see the most scurrilous, contemptible Democrat in this country in the Presidential chair, tnan Hendrick B. Wright of which amounts to very near what we had published as saying. Then follows abjut a half a column, all in one of the foulest and most abusive language, so characteristic of the author, mainly applied to M. B.

Sherwin and M. E. Wells, in which occurs this bit of rhetoric: "A set of dirty sneaking, thieving, lousy, political bastards and moral lepers." Think of such a creature as Charley Aldrich applying such terms as these to such men as B. Sherwin and M. E.

Wells. The creatuie who is known in Topeka as- the biggest rowdy among the rowdies; whose picture is said to be hung in the parlor of one of the dance houses! of TnpcVi. which he has not denied; who started from here to Topeka to attend 1 a political convention with only ten dollars, with utliing to sell and no visible way of procuring money by any honest mean's, but got plenty of money before the convention was over. There are many well authenticated reports circulated in Smith County of Aldrich's dishonesty, and immorality, but he is not worth the space it wonld require in our columns to rehearse them. That he is shrewd and witty, nobody denies, but that he is low and vulgar, without regard for the truth, is too well to require proof from us.
