BUSINESS CJJWS. WESTWARD, HO! W. Littleficld, ATTORNEY- at ii-wii uioii OTTAVrA, KANSAS. "Practices all the courts -of th State. Office, Up Stairs, Corner of Main and Third ts.

HAS GOME! ing could have saved the city. With the facilities of Ottawa, I think every building might have been saved. Ottawa has its rep-resentalive here, Mr. Adam Beck, one of our old citizens, is in the shadow catching business. We accidentally stumbled upon Mr.

J. F. Faust, who is traveling over the state organizing lodges of Knights of Pythias, he was rather backward in recognizing us, as we had the resemblance of real grangers of the modern style. On the evening of the 28th this place was visited by one hour's rain, not 24 as some of the papers have it, it was thankfully received, but the benefit to the wheat crop was very little. Again our wheels moved onward over the hills aud prairies of southern Kansas, to Wellington, which has two railroads, and about every other business house a saloon; business is lively here, on Saturday the town was literally filled with' teams from th country, and freighters from the Indian Territory.

Buildings of all description were under construction, tents and mover wagons on the outskirts of town, U. S. soldiers and ambulances paraded the streets, and all had the appearance of a frontier town. The rain that other places had, missed this part almost entirely, the wheat and grass has a parched, dry look, worse ihan any section we have passed through, relief is being sent from here to sufferers farther west, where crops are enthely dried up; how soon they wiil need it here, a short time may -tell. More anon.

A. W. B. the rostrum. She has no disagreeable provincialisms, yet she has a homely style of drawing comparisons, which appeals to the intelligence of all classes, and sometimes brings to mind the western ways of our old backwoods preachers.

We do not insinuate that there is anything unpolished in her delivery, but simply forcible, plain Saxon. The lady briefly reviewed the situation of the temperance cause, in other states, and then entered upon a full resume of the duties of true temperance people in Kansas. The eyes of the world, almost, were upon the young commonwealth, where slavery received its first and most deadly blow. It seemed to her a fitting thing, that Kansas, the very embodiment. of youthful vigor and growing importance, should strike the first blow, in the way of a recognition of temperance and prohibition, in the State Constitution.

She illustrated her points aptly, and in one particular, her simile struck us as being appropriate to the whiskey howl in Ottawa. brother," she said, "used to go shooting very often when a boy, and she frequently accompanied him. Upon one occasion, he found a wolf hole in a thicket, and after due deliberation fired into it. Listening attentively for a moment and hearing a howling sort of a growl, he turned to her, with I believe I've hit something." Thus she wanted every one to work, to shoot, figuratively, at intemperance, and there would always be a howl from something hit. Her lecture was an able one, and will long be remembered by those present, as one of the most effective and vigorous blows for temperance, ever delivered in Ottawa.

We hope to see her anions us again, at no distant day. Ten miles onward and we put up at the small town of Toronto, trying to keep up an existence. Here we. spent the memorable Saturday night and Sunday, the most restless day in the memory of the oldest inhabitant; we had to larriat our wagon to the calm side of a barn to keep it from returning to. Ottawa.

Across the Verdigrees and over the rolling hills of an almost unsettled country, onr caravan took its way, until we reached Eureka, which has a population of about 1800, a good large cut stone school house, and the finest court house in this part of the State, what there is to support this town, is not to be seen for miles around; the country from here to Eldorado is a rocky wilderness, the Hint hills occupying most of the country, inhabited only by an-elopes and the howling wolf; as we near Eldorado, fine farms, extensive wheac fields, and prosperous looking farmers make iheir appearance. Eldorado has a population of about 2,000, good water power, tine building stone, large store houses, and oeautiful resident ces, improvements going on all over the city. The citizens are highly elated at the prospects of Scofield's road coming in here, and having, a communication with Ottawa. We called upon Mr. A.

Menezes, where we found him, mallet and chisel in hand, decorating the monuments of the dead. Augusta, twelve miles south, In the valley of the Walnut, is a thriving little town of 1,000 souls, whiskey being the most saleble article in the place, and horse-racing being on a par with other business; Mr. Joe Wright, another of Ottawa's sons, was here throwing buildings together with a harried motion. Down the Walnut valley through fields of wheat 18 inches high, but suffering trom the drouth and chintz bugs, our route lay through a continuous field of wheat, not a fence to mark the proprietors possessions Thirty miles along ihis fertile valley of Kansas, and we run into the new and thriving town, or city it should be called, of Win field, which numbers about 3,000 inhabitants, and the most business like place we have struck; twelve business houses going up on Main street; and I should think a hundred or more dwellings about the city, one daily paper, and three weeklies, with every branch of business represented. The building stone is the finest in State, white magnesia lime stone, blocks of it I saw for walks fifteen feet in length, only one needed for the front walk from gate to door, the city being well supplied with walks of this material; two railroads, good water power, fine buildings, and beautiful residences ornament the city.

This place had a lirst-class lire, on the evening of the 29th, about 11 o'clock, the lire bells gave a few taps, and the citizens turned out without further notice, we found smoke issuing from a fur; niture store: in a short time a small Babcock's Extinguisher came upon the scene, but its feeble stream was only an aggravation to the vast crowd. This building was soon in flames, two dwellings to the east of it was burned, a livery stable, west then took lire, throwing its angry tlames into the Central Hotel which was soon amass of heated matter, thence to the Lindel House, and one block was all in flames. The citizens worked hard to keep the flames from reaching across the street, which was accomplished by untiring with the usual amount of wind of the last few days.nothi One of the BEST Eastern Artists, to take Charge of Look at His Work NO USD WAITING! "Artic'e fifteen shall be amended by adding section ten thereto, wiiieh Khali read as follows The manufacture and Side of intoxicating liquors fdisill be forever prohibited in this State, exeept for medical, sclent lie and mechanical purposes." i'hc ytsit of Miss -Willard can not fail to prove a permanent help to the temperance work in our community. We are sure that the ladies- of Franklin county have not been doing all they should in behalf of temperance. The women of the land are doing a mighty work in behalf of this great reform, and we know that there is abundance of undeveloped talent in our midst which, if rightly used, would give a new phase to temperance work. W. T.

C. Union has a good field to occupy, and has excellent officers. There is a grand opportunity here and now to do their work. We have more than once commended the publications of the "National Temperance Society, 58 Reade street, New York." Every one who can afford to speud even a small amount for Temperance books and papers, can get just what they need. Their publications cover all phases of the question.

Among the most popular and lively books and tracts they publish are those from the pen of Canon Farrar, the popular English writer. Ilia "Talks on Temperance" is a very fine book and can be bought in paper binding for twenty-five cents. MISS WILLARD. Last Friday night, a splendid audience greeted the far famed Miss Francis E.
