The Powhattan men who went to that country last spring have all had a touch of the ague, but otherwise they are all right. Ed thinks this country is the best and will probably stay here. Dry Goods, Notions, Ladies Shoes Etc, Marshal Thomson says he wishes to call the attention of the road overseers whose territory adjoins Hiawatha to the fact that they have the authority to clear the roads of lewed characters. There is a gang camping here close to town now that needs looking after. They will be troublesome next week during the Fair. The authorities can keep them out of town; but some one else must look after them on the roads. Democrat.

Charles Curtis, Republican candidate for congress, will speak at Bender's hall next Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock sharp. Come out and hear a good speech.

Died. Minnie Francis Powell, daughter of Margaret and Amos Moose died Sept. 9th 1898. Born in Warren county, Illinois, Aug. 24th 1863.

Age 35 years, two weeks and one day. Moved with her parents to Brown connty in 1870 and was married to Charles R. Powell, Sept. 24, 1882. She united with the Congregational church at Comet, Feb.

1887 and ever since has lived a true and devoted christian life. At the hour of death she asked Jesus to bless her and told ber friends not to worry, that she was not afraid to die. She bid them all goodbye and requested them all to meet her in heaven. She leaves a husband, two sons, a father and mother, two sisters and a brother to mourn ber loss. He has called for many a loved one, We have seen them leave our side; With our Saviour we shall meet them, When we to have crossed the tide.

When we've passed the vale of shadows With its dark and chilling tide; In that bright and glorious city We shall ever more abide. The best weekly newspaper in Kansas, The Topeka "If a gentleman wants a wife, he wears a ring on the first finger of his left hand" says a fashion Journal. Not much he don't. At least the gentleman who live aTound Powhattan don't. When one of our gentlemen wants a wife, about the first thing he does is to slide into his Sunday clothes and strike for the barber shop where he has his hair and whiskers fixed up about right, after which he goes to church and sits in the back seat where he can see all the girls who come in, and after selecting his victim he waits at the door until she comes along when he collars her, helps her into his rig and they buggy ride about half the night.

This is kept up until ho concludes she is his huckleberry, when if she is willing the proper papers are made out, furniture is bought, the bum is traded for a nadle and everybody is happy. Geo. F. Walker of Gerard is the new pharmacist at Valentine's drug store. Mr.

Walker comes highly recommended and looks and talks like a man who understood his MAIL BREEZE Sent free during the campaign of 1898 to every subscriber of The Powhattax Post who pays one year's subscription to this paper. Mr. Buser of Fidelity was in town last Tuesday and took a fine drill home with him which he bought from Samuel Bredahl.
