EXCITING -A rather exciting runaway occurred last night on West Main street. Ernest Smithing. was loading some boxes on the de livery wagon at O. W. Smith's furniture store.

After loading the boxes Ernest took the horse by the bridle to lead it across the sidewalk and in going over the walk one of the boxes was jolted off, which frightened the animal. which is only four years old and a little timid, and it jumped suddenly, throwing Mr. Smith in the ditch. To save himself from being trampled Ernest had to let go of the horse and it tore east on Main street at a furious gait. Near the corner by the the London clothing store the rig collided with a buggy and turned south and ran into another buggy, in which was 2.

lady and a little child, which stopped it. No great damage was done to either vehicle except to demolish the wood work considerably. The lady jumped out of the buggy and was hurt somewhat, but the child remained in the buggy and was uninjured. Don't forget to Register. fresh bread cakes and pies, got Ed Young's.

Wm. Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Crowe have returned from Chicago. F.

F. M. Dyer has resigned his position with the H. Durkee, Coal Company. Mrs.

Emma Weir returned Saturday from a two week's visit to the White City and Chicago. John Rhodda has been down the past week with malarial fever but is convalescent. John H. Hamilton and family, of Sunday with friends in this. city.

Robert Hogg has moved into Geo. Bollinger's house on E. street south part of town. The CITIZEN will be found on sale. in Columbus at G.

D. Shepard's Stationery store, John Kimmous of Galena, is visiting with his sister Mrs. James Varco of this city. J. Dennehey has coal interests near Pittsburg and has moved to that city.

Miss Emma Wilson has returned from Oklahoma where she has been spending the summer. Mrs. Chas. McCoy left here Monday for Webb City where she intends making her future home, Mrs. R.

Bennett and daughter, and Mrs. J. Morgan left Sunday for a visit near Jacksonville, Illinois. Geo. H.

Merriam and wife and Mrs. F. B. Jackman attended the Priests of Pallas Parade Thursday at K. 0.

"Bush" Evans left Saturday for Kansas City and will probably visit the World's Fair before returning. Boswell will leave for Omaha, Nebraska, to-morrow night where she will visit friends for a couple of weeks. RESULT OF A SUNDAY HUNT. ---Satu. rdsy afternoon Reed Stryker, Dean Allison and John Connors were hunting near Beulah, and while driving along the road in a wagon came up to a flock of, quail. Connors got out of the wagon with a double barrel shot gun to take a shot at. them.

He emptied one barrel and upon returning to the wagon put his gun in at the rear end. In doing 80 the hammer caught on the end gate and the loaded barrel was discharged, the charge taking effect in one thigh. He was taken to Beulah, the wound was examined, and it was discovered that only a flesh wound was the REGISTER! REGISTER! I 'NEIGHBORHOOD ITEMS Columbus Callings. Weir was in the City Friday. Clarence Aitchison and wife were among the many who went to Kansas City on Tuesday. It is said that every effort Is being made by the firm of Ritter Doubleday to reopen their bank. Mr. Meyers 8 well known citizen of Columbus fell from a pile of bailed hay while attempting to place a bail on top of the others.

In doing so he slipped, fell back and broke his neck. He died instantly. Mrs. Jennie Willis, wife of R. M.

Willis of this city. died Saturday Oct. 7th after a continued illness of several months. She leaves a husband and two children to mourn her loss. Mrs.

Dr. Shackle spent several days in Kansas City last week. Judge Perry of Cherokee was in the city Saturday. W. L.

Carr wife of Wefr City drove down Saturday afternoon. Our young ladies are making preparations for a carnival to be given at the Opera house November 8th. W. M. Pye and wife accompanied by Mr.

Ed Pierson of Joplin. came down Sunday to attend the funeral services of Mrs. R. M. Willis.

The Annual Log Rolling of the M. W. A. was held at Oswego, Kansas, October 6th. Our Band, Lodge, and quite a number of our citizens attended.
