Keso was 42 years of age and beloved and respected by all who knew her. The burial took place last Sunday in the Fairview cemetery and the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Sheerer, the new M- E. minister at this place. Mr.

Keso has the deep sym. patby of our whole community. Mr. Henry Bethe, a progressive farmer two miles northeast of here, yesterday receive! 100 young carp for his new fish pond. The fish were ordered through Mr, L.

Lord is a good proof of the truthfulness of the saying, thut industry leads to success. When this town started he came here with his family, to grow up with us, He had scarcoly any means, but ho was industrious and he worked early and ate. As a result he now calls a neat little house an 1 a number of lots his own and our people have so much confidence in him that they choose him as constable at our last eloction. Mr. E.

Johnson, our polite young barber, is progressing very nicoly in business. He is improving his shop as fast as he can, and is gaining new customers continually. We are glad to see him succeed. A copy of the Ellsworth Daily Democrat has come to hand. It is a neat looking paper and the number, we received, contains a very full account of the doings of the Northwestern M.

E. Conference, whioh was in session thero last week, The Omaha Southern, aid for which is being worked up in Clay, Washington and Dickinson, will be offered our people soon and should be secured at once and without delay. This would give a direct Chicago line via Omaha, and bring an important section of the state in direct commu-nicution with MoPherson. The carpenters are hard at" work on Mr. John Watt's two-stqry store-building and the structure will be completed within a few weeks. -Mr. H. S.

McCumber is the contractor, and this ia a guarantee, that it will be a good building. As we stated before, the lower ttory will be used by N. W. "Ward Co. for agricultural implements and a tin-shop, and the upper story will serve as a Town Hall.

Mr. G. Wt Slaughter js having the cellar dug for Ins residence. He will build a two story house, 16 by 30 feet, with basement, and the building, when completed, will be the finest looking dwelling in town. Trade is picking up considerably.

All merchants report that the busi ness is improving. The dwelling-house, which Mr. S. McCumber is constructing for Rev. Halbert, is finished on the out- Bide and the carpenters are now at work on the inside.

In about a week from now the building will be completed. In our estimate of the shipments made by our great stock-firm, Messrs. Baxter Watts, vpe were intirely too low. Upon enquiring at the office of the station-agent we find that these gentlemen have shipped no less than 151 cars of stock up to date. There figures prove, that, besides being one of the best agricultural sections of the state, we also have an excellent stock-growing country around us.

Despite the disagreeable weather on Saturday evening a number of Odd Fellows and Masons met at Ward's hardware store to take steps in regard to organizing lodges here. Committees were appointed and there will be another meeting next Saturday evening at the same place. We expect it will not be long before two lodges will be in working order here. Mr. James Raymond acted as bank-cashier, during Mr.

Fuller's absence, to the entire satisfaction of everybody but ourselves. We tried to work a bogus check on him and he wouldn't take it Mr. M. Doane and family, from Council Grove, have moved to our town. And thus we keep on increasing- Mr.

Chas. Meyer, of New Cambria, came over here last Sunday to spend the day with his brother the popular furniture man. Mrs. S. W.

Sawyer, of Lawrence, a sister of our Mr. A. A. Farnham, is visiting with her brother's family this week. Miss Lufa Farnham, daughter of Mr.

A. A. Farnham and a very pop ular teacher at Emporia, is spending a short vacation with her parents this week. Mrs. and Miss Gormley, of Topeka and Mrs Gibson, of Jefferson Town ship, spend last Monday with the wife of our popular fellow-citizen, Mr.

Tom Mead. In the evening the ladies mentioned and Mrs. Mead went to Salina to visit Cap. Baker's family. Mr.

Meyer, of the enterprising furniture house of Meyer went to Kansas City yesterday to lay in a stock of walLpaper. Dr. T. B. Pattin was called to Gypsum City last Monday to consult with Drs.

Sawtell and Bradley in regard to the case of Mr. H. HoulJ, who suffered from typhoid fever and was in a very critical condition. Do-spite the efforts of the physicians the patient died on Tuesday forenoon. What makes this case more sad is the fact, that his young wife who has sj suddenly boen made a widow, had but two days before his death become a mother.
