CARLTON VOL 1. CARLTON, KANSAS, THURSDAY, MARCH 31. 1887, NO. 42. At the close of the current fiscal Farms The largo edition we printed last week was not suffioient to supply the demand of nil, who wanted to send copies of "The Guide td Wealth and last year and the building boom for this season has just commenced.

One of the buildings now in course of construction will contain a Town-Hall, and the upper story of another building, which is just being finished will be used as a lodge room by the Odd-Fellows, Masons and United Workmen. There will remain after that two bunches of bonds to be paid, one of 3 per cents, amounting to and due on or after 1891; the other of 4 per cents, due on or after M)7, and amounting to $737,000,000." In this connection it is interesting to jiote the favorable comparison be tween this and other nations.

Italy's bonded indebtedness is 000, Russia's $3,500,000,000, Great Britain's France's Sknaioe Iucufxs, in spite of his prominence, rains his plain and un ostentatious ways. In going about Washington City, he rides in a street car with plain people. There is no poppycock about Mr. Ingalls. When your friend in the east asks you to tell him something about Kan sas, tell him that her net valuation is $554,000,000, or almost $370 per cap ita; that the value of her farm pro ducts last year was $738,000,000 or $433 per capita- that she has 300,000 miles of telegraph wires and 10,983 miles of railroad and 000 miles more contracted for.

That Dickinson county has the bright est future before her of any county in the State. Tell him all this and then if he has never been here he will have a faint idea of what Kansas really is.

It is not only to the interent of this town, but just as much if not more so to tho inter est of the parties, who seek a new location; that they should be informed of the excellent chances which this part of the state offers to all seekers after wealth and happiness. The Guide to Wealth and Happiness.

The lioom! The surges and rolls over the bountiful prai ries of the beautiful Sunflower state, and its tones of praise and rapture over the productiveness of the soil, the salubriousness of the climate and the success of the inhabitants of this great wonderland, rise from every city and hamlet and farm in glorious Kansas and commingle into one grand chant of admira tion, whose charming sounds vibrate over the length and breadth of the Union. The sweet melodies of this song are wafted to the ears of the ill-paid mechanics, tho over-worked farmers and the hard-pushed merchants in the older states, and the words they convey cause an irresistible lonsrins: to pilgrim to this land of promise, where the sun shines so bright, where your labor seems light, and work gives you peace plenty, This longing, which is so thoroughly justified, that the number of immi grants to this state is annually in creasing, has lately spread to such an extent among all classes of people that at least 250,000 persons are ex pected to come to Kansas this spring. What part of "this grw.t state they going to Some of them know their way; but many thousand are yet undecided as to their nture lo cation, and these would be thankful to anyone who will direct and guide them. It would take a groat general to lead and place such a large army and we are not equal to the task, but a few thousand we are willing to lead and if these will follow, they are the most lucky ones, for we will direct tbem to the best county in the state, if they desire to have1 a good farm, and to the htai fciwn in that county, if they wish to live in a city. We mean the county of Dickinson and the town of Carlton, and in the fol lowing lines we give the reasons why we recommend them.

Dickinson county takes the lead of all counties in richness of soil, area of tillable Jn4 end natural advantages for the greatest diversity of crops. It is one of the first counties in the state for wheat and eorn, and while its corn crop during the last two years was enormous, the yield this year is expected to be still larger. It impossible to tell what immense cops will be harvested when the county is once fully settled. The surface is undulating prairie and there is probably not another county in the state with so small an amount of waste and nntillable land. The soil is a rich black loam, strong and productive, and very easily worked.

The county is well watered by a number of btreHms and ha1 an abundance of pure, clear water for stock and all other purposes. Good drinking water is obtained at a depth of from twenty-five to fifty feet Dickinson is Unsurpassed as a stock growing county and all classes of animals do welL The farming piipRlutioit is intelligent, thrifty and prosperous and many of the farmers are wellhy. There are many thousand acres of land yet waiting for the plow and when these are once in cultivation, Dickinson will be th produc-ive hrd the richest county in the to of KurthaH. Carlton, although the youngest may justly be called the best town in Dickinson county. It has the best location and that this is true, is prov en by the fact, that hardly any stranger evt-r inquired into the merits of this place, but what ho concluded to locate here.

The plach started into life a year ago and to-day thin little wonder counts amonsr ite improve ments a $2MK) chntvh, a fi'XN) school, a $1000 hoteh i besides two smaller ones,) an elevpfe yiij a roller flouring-mill with of eighty IwtpIs of flonr per dny. A-bont twenty-five store-buildings and fifty dwellings, some of hem very ii'ip iwidete Kvt br'i church belongs to the Presbyterians, whose pastor is now building a two story dwelling. The Methodists have a pastorate here and will build a church this, summer and it is very probable that one or two more church edifices will be erected this season. Five general merchandise stores, a bank, a hardware store, two agricultural implement establishments, two drug stores, a furniture store, two blacksmith shops, three shoe shops, a large well-stocked lumber-yard, a livery stable, a printing-office, mill, elevator, paint-shop, butcher shop. two coal yards, two insurance and real estate offices, barber-shop, hotels, restaurants, and boarding houses and several carpenter-shops make up the business part of town, to which is to be added a stock-firm, that shipped 151 cars to A Building and Loan Association, with its first series of stock all taken, is in a flourishing condition; and a volunteer fire de partment has been organized.

The town offers superior advanta ges to business men of every branch, as at least double the present number of establishments are needed to draw and hold all the trade that is tribu tary to. this point The farming community around ub is in full sympathy with Carlton, and any enter prise, that may be started here, will receive encouragement and support from our farmers as well as our citi zens. Capitalists will hna an ex cellent chance here for profitable investments, and Manufacturers of all kinds will be given extraordinary inducements. Mechanic? find plenty opportunity for work, and what is more, they can secure a home here cheaper than anywhere else. The town-company with Mr.

L. Peck, a prominent merchant, at the head, is composed of liberal business men and the prices they ask for their lots are almost like giving thenl away in comparison to what lots in other town3 are held at. To enable people of small means to. setfure their own homes the majority of residence lots are sold at fifteen, dollars a piece, and all other lots aro also very low. But we would state right hero, that the prices of all lots will be raised considerably after May 1st, and it is therefore advisable to come to Carl ton at as early a day as possible.

The Missouri Pacifio Railway has a station here and this is considered a very important shipping point. Two side-tracks are now in use to accomodate the business, but another one will soon be needed A north-and-south road will bo constracted in a very short time and Carlton will then be one of the most important railroad points in Central Kansas. Parties desiring farm-lands in this neighborhood, will be shown around by onr real estate agents as well as our rarmers ana uie latter wui give them a hearty welcome. Business men, manufacturers and all other persons, who wish to locato here, should call upon Mr. L.

A. Peck, president of the Town company, whose store is near the depot He and all other citizens of Carlton will show every possible courtesy to strangers The Kansas City Star Shows that it is posted by the following: In the history of Kansas there was never such a real estate boom as there is on hand now. Every town and community in Kansas i3 aglow with activity. Progress and wonderful development is everywhere noticeable. It is among the possibilities that Kansas will have two million population by 18'JO.

Eastern papers that talk about "Way imt in Kansas," forget that Kansas is now. the geographical, political, and shortly to be, the numerical center of this vast continent It is time to plant trees and we again take occasion to remark, as we have often done before, that every man, women and child who owns a farm, a town lot or a square rod of virgin soil in Kansas, should see to it that trees of some kind are set out this ipring. Nothing helps the looks of a dace so much as trees and shrubbery, and no investment one can make will pay so well in dollars and cents as the planting of trees Will. It is an ill will that blows nobody any good. If the operations of the inter-state commerce law turn out prejudicial to bur intpiwb hero in the wesl, easU-rn manufacturers can 1k induced to mbe their traps into Kansas and mc nufacture goods of all kinds right on the sjxit, and we can snap our fingers at traffic managers who refuse to equalize the long I short haul rafes.
