A tribe of f-mall boys can make more noise compassing about a schoolhouse than all the ancient forces that felled walls of Jerico. Cicero says "economy itself is a source of revenue." and old Mr. C.

was correct. Did our people believe and follow this truth to-day we would be better off. Many of our U. L. and Democratic friends wear an expression so sour that one would be justified in asserting that that their chief diet had been on pickles for many months.

Young and old ladies matrimonially predisposed will have to soon get a move on them or wait four more years the blessedness of supreme silence for leap year will soon be to its termi nus. A report was rife in Summit Sunday that the official count of New York and West Virginia had gone for Cleveland and that he was elected. This made some of them feel rather diluted so to speak. There must have been something wrong with the Democratic roosters diet about the 6th of November for since then they are all pictured throwing up their victuals; or, "Heaving up Jonah." C. Gordon wishes Cleveland had been re-elected so he could have got old Sam (his 47 year old mule) in as one of the cabinet officers.

They would rather get their government mule timber from the south Cv. They had put a blast in the well and gone to dinner and failed to hear the thing go off as usual. A man by the name or Jenkins in Summit had one of his horses go crazy last week. It got loose from him and acted as though it was blind, running through the wire fence several times and attempted to go through one man's house but they pounded it back. The animal was still at lnrge at last ac counts.

It is very generally conceded out our way that the Empire has lost some of its former prestige by its one sided biased and prejudiced ideas during the past lew months, a he iiaiks was distancing the Empire and gaining some commendation until that MeCra ry letter came a boohing up which sor ter cracked the enamel on some of the and they screwed up their countenances and gave a half withering glance toward thou editor. The people ol Clyde subtracted from the sum 01 their intelligence when they so lorgot the dignity oi nansas citizen ship us to indulge themselves such riotous and iuo'j hku demonstrations as to burn Cleveland in eihgy. He has never done anything deserving ot such i strong mark or putilic displeasure. The cause should indeed be a severe one when citizens will, in this eulight enea age, allow themselves to ue car ried away in the heat ot excitement to such a degree as to act so rash, unwise and unbecoming, bo uncalled lor a measure as this deserves what it i receiving from all well disposed citi zens from all political patties, strong condemnation. We believe in economy but don't relish seeing it practiced wholly at the farmers expense. Nordo we believe it quite right in "stealing" a few cents from the toilers pittance and bestowing it upon others no more deserving. it would he profitable to the county the modern wise-acres (designated by the modified title of commissioners) would begin their economy by curtailing expenses on jail repairs and pauper support; I he latter in the last report amounting Xn over $1,200, If it is lawful to heat and cheat the country people we wish you would try it about town and sen if it will not work there Miss Susie Rushton is able to sit oi it if To Enable me to meet my Accounts, I will Sell MILLINERY FOR THE NEXT TEN DAYS AT A eduction S. We do not care what political principles these beings adhere to they are set of scamps and the sentiments Anon ana Summit townships will bear us out in so strong a statement since the citizens have seen the tax list they are denouncing it with a high hand and strong language; and they are jusuueuin so aomg lor mere is no valid cause nor any Kausas laws that says property shall be assessed at more than its value and the commissioners have no right to raise the tax. The taxes are not equally proportioned some land taxed twice as high as last year and some not much change either way. when land and stock dbnreci ates there is no justification in taxing above its value.

We'll say that you can rest assured that the murmurings of the people will one day culminate in something woose than this present murmenng if the assumed powers the commissioners have taken so arrogant ly rule the people is laid oil. it Knoxville (Tenn.) Journal: East Tennessee gave Harrison a larger ma jority than was given him in the great Republican state of Iowa. General Harrison religious'v believes in home manufactures. Therefore it is safe to affirm that he will do his own cabinet makiug with out the aid of the Democratic, Independent and Mug wump papers and politicians. President Cleveland vetoed the bill granting to Kansas 7,501) acres of land for her state agricultural college. He approved the bill, however giv ing Alabama 20,000 acres for her state university.

Comment unnecessary. Piladelphia Press: The Republican party is distinctly pledged to three things: First, protection; second, re vision of the tariff; third reduction of taxes and of the surplus. These three things are entirely harmonious. Neither -militates against the others. The Republican party is equally com mitted to all and it must see to it that all are realized.

General Harrison receives more electoral votes than any other Republi can, president except Grant. Lincoln received 180 electoral votes in 1800 and 212 in 1804. Grant received 214 in 1868 and 236 in 1872. Hayes received 183 and Garfield 214. Four years ago Cleveland carried twent states and 210 electoral votes.

Harrison carries twenty-one and 219 votes, while Cleveland has on ly 162. The more the victory is con sidered, th? bigger it grows. They are not through counting the votes in some of the back districts of West Virginia and the prospect is that they will manage to bold the returns back from these sections until they know just how many nune Democratic votes is necessary to elect the Demo cratic candidate fori governor and de prive Harrison of the electoral vote. They are pretty good down there, but if the' ever let a Republican majority go ty. it will be an error of the head and not the heart.

l.ETTEU no. 2. Hkad Wateus Salt Rivkk) November 20th, 1888 Tn the swaling swirl of the soughful wind, as the gust goes glooring by, I sit the bowl of a bournful birch, with a moan and a soulful sigh; I he mellow ing mists of the eve are low, and the frog in the dankful marsh, chirps chirpingly sad in the ghoulsome gloom a swivering voice and harsh. wheie is the swing of the swoon- ful swish, and the voice of the Aim flam fowl? Methinks it mourns from the murky mold, from the home of the hootf ul owl." Now swivel me swift from the surging spring, I'm weary of wold and wind; the gruesome graik of the job-berwock. comes jimmering to my mind; the feeble song of a spotsome frog.

comes solemn wise, soughing slow, and again I hear by thebourrrful birch, the wail of his wimpled woe. "Oh, where is the swing of the swoonful swish; from the land of the springful sprole, must the blue mist blur on the tinker's drale afreight with their fraught my soul?" I dreamed, I dreamed of November sixth, in the dim of the danksome dark and methought I rode oh a moonful main, in the prow of a pullful bark; I wrought a'rhyme as I roamed along, on the stream of the saltful gloat; I awoke at dawn, in the dimpled day and above is the rhyme I wrote. Mournfully Yours, Huan. Think ot It. There seems to be a general demand that the Republicans of Concordia put up and elect a straight Republican ticket next spring for the various city officers.

The ueople want an or ganization that is and will be responsible for the policy and administration of the public affairs of the city. One thing true the people don want any more figure head mayor's as the city has had to suffer withthe pasttwoyears. Instead of such they want a progressive man, one up and awake to matters of interest. There have doubtless been seores of splendid things for Concordia allowed to pas unnoticed bv the chief executive of our city, simply because of lack of knowledge to De aoie io aiscru uwiwn importance from those that were not. manv mailers our nusmess aim professional men hive complained bitterly, and in large numbers at that, of the indifference and even opposition to plans and schemes for the progress and prosperity of business circles and the city in general, we cannot can to mind one incident in which the so-called mayor of the city has taken the lead or been an important factor in any matter of public enterprise during his term of office.

This kind of administration may or may not suit the two or three persons who own a first mortgage on his official perseu but is entirely unsatisfactory to almost an entirety of the citizens of the city. It would be well to be looking aftei these matters in time and not wait until some non-entity is popped up by a set of political schemers, and then be forced to accept your dose, be it worm-wnnil nr enirafi. Anv citv is signally cursed when she becomes so degener-" ated that nobody worthy ot holding on office can be elected to the higher gifts within her power, and her prospects of success or brilliancy are handicapped at the very ontstart. While a judicious and progressive administration of the city's affairs may not walk around and drop coined dollars into tho people's laps while they sit still, yet it always makes it a point to see that there are opportun ities lor all to oe ousy ana coineuieu. A city is much like a family and must be managed and provided for in some ways, and it is a ise father and liko-wisc a wise mayor that manages to see that the members of each have ail the chances obtainable to carve their own way to prosperity and contentment.

Concordia doesn't want any more old grannv Mayors. She wants a reprepen-tative'man'at the helm who will give her a vigorous administration. Republicans spe that 1ho right, man is cho3en for the positions next spring. A. H.
