M. F. Compton, Atty for 1'lff. PRINCE BISMARCK'S Comfortable Working-Room Void of Co qu.try or Luxury. "Count Bismarck's study, as he called It In English, was a room of no great size nor furnished with any splendor.

It was nothing more," writes the veteran correspondent, Mr. George W. Smalley, the Ladles' Home Journal. "There was a rug on the varnished floor of the usual hard wood; A large writing desk, littered with, papers, stood in the right-hand corner on the further side. There were few books.

A print or two hung on the walls. A sideboard stood in the center, near the writing-table, and there were armchairs. It was a working-room; none of the coquetry nor luxury which some hard workers like to surround themselves with was visible. There was no lack of comfort, but comfort had not been the thing chiefly considered when the room had been furnlsned. The palace, as a whole, though on a large scale, with large rooms, and many of them, had no great splendor.

Origin of the Cocktail. Many theories have recently been advanced In the New York Sun as to the origin of the cocktail, but one has been omitted. A Toltec nobleman of Mexico once sent to his king by the hand of his beautiful daughter a decoction of pulque of his own invention. The king was as much, delighted with the one as with the other. He drank the last and married the first.

The name of the maiden was Xochithl, a designation ever after applied to the drink. When our troops under Gen. Scott invaded Mexico they took kindly to the beverage and corrupted its name Into cocktail, by which name it has ever since been known by the world at large. Of this concoction' we have invented so many forms that the United States has come to be considered its place of origin. Drain your land and improve MEAT MARKET it.
