JAMES A Most StartlioJ Revelation from a Doftth-bed. Senator J. W. White, of Rice County, In the "Nine Hole." Hutchinson Dally News. A News reporter to-day met a gentle man of standing and veracity who gave the particulars of a startling death-bed confession made at Lyons last week, by a doctor of prominence.

The matter did not get out until Saturday, when, as can be Supposed, a great sensation was stirred up In that quiet village. It will be remembered that several years ago, Lawrence, the treasurer of Rice county, was tried here on a change of venue, and convicted of robbing the county treasury of some thirteen thousand dol lars. Lawrence claimed that one morn ing he went to the office as usual and found that some one had robbed the safe. This was thought too thin, especially as about that time a great many Improvements were made on Lawrence's farm. John White, then county attorney, now state seator, prosecuted the case with much vigor and succeeded In sending blm up for three years.

The confession of the doctor is in effect as follows: "I happened to be near the otllce that night, and hearing a noise, went in. The vault was open, and standing inside was John White, (above re ferred to,) when White, upon being dis covered, said, "you've got me. Don't squeal and I'll give you $3,000," which I accepted and immediately bought out two drug stores (which was a fact.) The improvements made on the farm of Lawrence was done with money given to Mrs. Lawrence by John White, with whom he was always thought to be Intimate." This trial caused a great excitement at the time, but this development causes a great deal more now. Mr.

White is well known here and Is prominently and favorably known all over the state. IIjs has not yet been heard from. The above is taken from the Hutchinson Dally News of Tuesday. Mr. White is well and favorably known here, and while we shall take no stock in the story whatever until we have ''proofs as strong as holy writ," and don't believe a word of it, yet we reproduce It for what it is worth, Married, LEE-BAKER At the reldence of the brides parents on Tuesday 12th 1885, John V.

The (election Is over and winter draws near, but the same old county seat tight Is knocking away In Pratt county Sun City Union. You'r oft your base, and have evidently been wearing cotton In your ears; and didn't hear the returns.

The vote on the eounty seat left it at Iuka. Hcrrlck, the Democratic candidate forjudge in the district adjoining this the 19th, was elected by a handsome ma jority. It was not on account of any un popularity of his opponent, but a square-toed victory. South west Kansas is going to slvo up Democratic In political contests hereafter, and did so this year as a general thing wherever the lines were drawn. J.

In Comanche county there were three tickets in the Held, the Democratic, Republican, and Independent. The Democrats elected the sheriff, county clerk, clerk of the district court, register of deeds, probate judge, county commis sioner, surveyor and coroner. Each of the other tickets elected a commissioner, and the Republicans elected their candidate for the legislature, county treasurer, and county attorney. Monday night a little while after dark ahorse of Shelly Blackburn was missed which had been seen in the stable by the hired hand, a short time before, and has not since been seen. A short time before, a young man was seen riding a horse, and a strange horse answering to the description of the horse he rode was in a corn field nearby the next morning.

We give no names nor what the suspicions are until there are further developments, lest we do an injustice. The Holman committee it is thought will report to congress In favor of giving the Indian territory a territorial goverment the same as other territories of the United States. This would necessitate the appointment of a governor, judge, attorney, and so on and give the terriory a delegate In con gress; and right here and now we put in nomination for congress that distin guished chief Mr. Calf. Ofcourse we are aware of the report that Mr.

Calf "kick ed the bucket" the other day, but that was gotten out by the Wichita Eagle and the other enemies of Major Calf, and is a campaign lie. Ground was broken yesterday for the new brick school building to be put up in Saratoga. It will be a two story structure of the most handsome mod' ern architecture, with thirteen foot ceil ings in both lower and upper stories. It will be one of the finest buildings, when completed, in southwest Kansas, and the contractor, Mr. Klnght Brown, informs us that he will have it ready for occupancy within ninety days.

We are glad to be able to state this. It was feared at one time that the construction of the building might be put over until spring, but we had little fear but that our energetic school board who had been elected with a view of the prompt building of the house, would And ways and means to go ahead. There is no liner building site than the school block In this city, anywhere, and we doubt if any of us can fully appreciate how much it will add to the beauty of our little city until we see it completed. The editor of the Democrat is in receipt of a letter from the Judge elect of this district, who lives at Sterling. It was not written for publication, but we take the liberty of quoting one sentence; "I want to thank you, and all my there, for the interest taken in me." When Judge Clark In deference to the wishes of the people of both parties in the district cut loose from all partisanship, refused to go into the St.

John Republican convention, and came out as an Independent candidate, we admired his independence and decided to support him if the party to which we belong did not bring out a candidate. As is well known the Democratic party of the district, as an organization, in effect did si ort Clark, because standing before me district as an independent candidate as he did, and having all confidence In the ability and Integrity of the man they felt like doing so. In this county he was supported by the people regardless of party, and we say to those who worked for his election, those whom he so heartily thanks In the brief sentence published above, that we don't believe they will ever have cause to regret their action during the four years ha will be on the bench.
