Ilughey, manager of the Goodrich Cattle Company and resident agent for our town, went to Topeka Monday on business connected with the future of Springvale. E. B. Schofield the wellknown ranchman on the head of Spring creek, is preparing to cultivate many of the broad, fat acres that go to make up his 3,000 acre ranch, lie has faith in combined ranching and farming and will endeavor to demonstrate it this year. In speaking of the successful farmers in Pratt county it would not be right to pass by the Kay Bros.

They have W0 acres of land, cattle, horses, hogs, and are preparing to put out big crops this year. They came to this county several years ago, bringing no money to speak of with them, and all that they now possess they have made by their own exertions. Tally another for Pratt county's farmers. Wm. Green, our efficient trustee came to this part of Pratt county in '78, we believe.

He was then a poor, man, but by good management and close application to hi3 farm, he now owns 320 acres of land, horses, mules, cattle, hogs, etc. Mr. Green is a blacksmith by trade and besides doing all his own work in that line sharpens a plow for his neighbors occasionally for accommodation. It will not do to tell us that farmers cannot make money in this country. We know of too many successful farmers.

A leap year girl made the following proclamation: "How loose 'round my wiast were the clothes of my childhood, as my doubled-up corset reminds with pain; the slips that I wore when I used to chop stovewood, had more real enjoyment than bustle or train. The bustle I know, is a thing highly treasured by ladies built up on the mocking bird style, but give mo that garment with looseness unmeasured, tho old Mother Hubbard, the loose Mother Hubbard, the honored old Hubbard, which, beats any style." Among the farmers who have been successful in this section, we might mention Wm. Puterbaugh. Mr. Puter-baugh came to this section of Kansas seyeral years ago with but little capital except good health and a determination to stick to his claim and build up with the country.

By hard work and the practice of true economy he is now the possessor of 320 acres of land, a nice bunch of cattle and several horses. He lias in a nice crop of wheat and will plant a large acreage of oats and other crops. Ho has two brothers located near him who are also among our successful farmers. One is working his own farm of 160 acres, while tho other has rented and is working the Farmer place. Springvale, March 5, 1888.

Greeting to the Advocate and its esteemed readers. We feel interested in Springvale and think she has a future, of which any town should be proud. Her natural parks, her pure, sparkling, soft water, in which there is no germ of disease, should attract the attention of a thoughtful public. "We started out with the one idea of writing a few peronal items and here we are, singing the praises of Springvale. The county seat fight is over the smoke of the battle has cleared away, and we are happy.
