THE HIAWATHA HERALD Horton Commercial: Fonr Horton men, The Henry Clay. Richard Smith, Day Chorn and Curtis Walter Irving have been developing an old abandoned mine on the farm of Mr. Canton, southeast of Horton, and have succeeded in -striking an eighteen inch vein at a depth of about eight feet. They have had considerable experience in mining and claim that it is just as fine coal as can be found anywhere, free of slate and solid as can be. They are now busy removing the dirt and will have a good sized tunnel within a few days.

lad rot the recent rain interfered with the work it was their intention to have brought in a load for inspection the last of the week, but will not be able to bring it in now until the first of next week. The owner of the mine says that he worked it, some over twenty years ago, and supplied coal for the Central Branch road when it was building through Muscotah, but aiterwards the mine was abandoned and caved in. Should the developing of this mine prove as stated by these men, it will be a good thing for Horton. That there is plenty of coal in the vicinity of Horton is evident from the many local discoveries, but then none have ever been developed to theextent to find out the real worth and output. However these men intend to dig as long as they can find coal, with the hopes of striking a much larger vein.

Charley Curtis is going to be elected, but this is his finish in the First congressional district. That is apparent to anybody. Many of the fellows who are standing by him this year are doing so for the last time; they can't afford to. be in a continual wrangle with their Republican neighbors and friends. It must be admitted that there are Republicans who can never be reconciled to Curtis; that there are Republicans standing by him to-day who strongly disapprove of his methods.

These people are letting it be known that they are making their last stand. That the Curtis opposition is going to give the Democrats an unusual number of Democratic legislators from the First district this year there is no doubt -Atchison Daily Globe. Hugh Henney got into the railroad business in a hurry. He made application for a position one week and got it the next. Last week he took care of the station at Powhattan while the agent was away and this week he is holding down a station way out on the main line.

He expects to have a regular station in the near future. In the meantime his wife will spend the winter with her mother in Hiawatha. The Hiawatha newspaper which pretends to stand for the whole ticket failed to mention Mr. Gilbert in any manner in its write up of the candidates. Is it possible that Mr.

Gilhert is not satisfactory to the Curtis organ? Curtis is the only Republican in Congress who ever recommended the removal of an old Veteran from his own district and recommended a man who is not a Civil War Veteran as a Pension Agent. -Troy Chief. Mr. and Mrs. J.

W. Babbitt returned from a trip to the St. Louis Exposition Tresday. Miss Alma Barnett returned Monday from a visit in St. Louis.

Miss Trent returned from St. Louis Monday. mass meeting to nominate an "independent" county ticket in Doniphan county in opposition to the regular Republican ticket. Most of the nominees on the Republican ticket in Doniphan county are against Curtis. Congressman Curtis made a speech a Coal Creek.

up in the south part of Nemaha county Monday night, and the Seneca Tribune says there was not a Curtis publican there to preside. It says that there were 25 voters present at the meeting, but they were all either Democrats, Populists or Republicans who are against Curtis. Commenting editorially OIL the meeting the Tribune says: "Congressman Curtis began his campaign in Nemaha county with a speaking meeting on Coal creek last Monday. His Topeka organs flaudt this meeting as one in the enemy's country, and predict great accessions to the Curtis ranks to follow. Coal creek is one of the strongest Democratic strongholds in Nemaha county, populated by an industrious class of Irish who generally 'vote 'er But Mr.

Curtis has his workers out attempting to capture this Democratic vote, and thep are offering the earth for support. Republican sentiment in Nemaha county is so notoriously antiCurtis that the congressman makes no attempt to save strength from his own yaruy, but comes into the section sowing discord, threatening candidates and bartering for support. It is a sorry sight; but the November count of the ballot will show the voter in Nemaha county khows his mind and will not be dissuaded from rebuking with defeat a congressman whose nomination was obtained by fraud and who comes into Nemaha counuy through the back door!" Mr. G. W.

Fowler of Hightower, Ala, relates all experience he- had while serving on a petijury in a murder case at Edwardsville, county seat of Clebourne county, Alabama. I took one dose of it and was better in five minutes. The second dose cured me entirely.

Two fellow jurors were afflicted in the same manner and one small bottle cured the three of us." For sale by all druggists.
