Skues, late of the British deliver an enter taining and interesting lecture on X'he Land of the White Elephant or India beyond the Ganges." Ho commenced by telling of his landing in that wonderful country, and his first sensations on being introduced to Indian life, one so different to what he had been ac customed to before. Leaving India he crossed to Burmah, or, as it is sometimes called, The Land of the White Elephant, or India beyond the Ganges." He gave us a graphic account of the Capital, Rangoon, apd of I he various native customs, social and religious, all of which ex-eited our curiosity. 1 he lecture was interspersed with various personal incidents and anecdotes, which kept up the interest of the subject" so well that when tho lecturer brought his address to a close, we were hardly aware that our attention had been arrested for an hour and a quarter. We hear that the Captain intends visiting Fort hcott and lecturing there and should he do so, wo are sure he will be appreciated in that city, and that he will not fail to attract an audience who will find themselves as pleased and amused with the account of his experiences in the East as we were ourselves. Rev Thompson L.

Smith. This distinguished Episcopalian divine has bceikdoing an excellent missionary work in Chetopa and Baxtor Springs, Kansas. In each of these places he has organized a flourishing society, and has advanced so far with his building enterprises, that in Baxtor Springs a largo and comfortable church edifice is near'y finished, and in Chetopa an other commodious building approaches rap idly towards completion. He is universally popular, not only with his own congregation, but with all who come in contact with him. Able and eloquent solely to the cause of Christ and religion, adding to the stainless purity of a pVivate Hfc, the largo, open-handed charities of his divine mission, he labors without ceasing in tne moral vineyard, and impresses all with his devotion and purity.

It is impossible to es timate the good he has already done thro his missionary efforts, and through his administration of affairs in the Lexington diocese, Without knowing anything of the wishes or intentions of the vestrymen of the parish of Saint Luke, in Kansas City, or of tho steps taken to Bupply tho place of their late pastor, we do know that Dr. Smith, if he could be in duced to leave Lexington, would make one of the most influential and well-beloved pastors ever called upon to perform a christian mission in our midst. His great aim in life is to build up, to increase the power of tho gos pel, to extend the influence of religion, to multiply good works, and to the accomplish ment of these purposes, he brings learning. eloquence, a stainless character, great bociui gifts, and a piety as modest as it is true an ennobling. We take the above from a late number of the Kansas City Times, and most cheerfully endorse the truthful commendations of the Times upon Rev.

Mr. Smith. He is doing an excellent work in Southern Kansas, and in behalf of the communities he is so largely benefiting, we trust he may still continue his missionary labors amongst us. There is a slight inaccuracy in the state ment of the Times, in regard to the Episcopal church building in this city. Comparatively little work has yet done upon it, but it is confidently hopod that before the close of the presoat season, it will be completed and ready for occupancy.
