Hartley, the license agent for the reunion, has been too busy looking after the fakirs, chance merchants and sightseers in what is termed Hartley's half acre, to take an active part in the reunion.

He took the platform' last night, however, and made a glowing speech whih was applauded to the echo. Mr. Hartley and Eugene Lyman of this city, all amateurs. They started in to run four hours each day during the week, the men covering the greatest number of miles to be the winners. It was found they could not stand these long runs, however, and the time was cut down to an hour and a half each heat and subsequently to one hour.

All made good time. Lyman' took the lead the first day, and had he kept up the pace would certainly have won the first prize. Adams had bad luck with his wheels the first day and was off the track considerable, but after securing a high geared safety he made up for lost time and soon took the lead. Lyman, Hart and Dustman were aboul evenly matched and made good lime. On Thursday an accident occurred by which- Hart and Lyman were thrown from their wheels and the former received injuries which kept him off the track entirely.

At the close of the five days race yesterday evening it was found the men had each run eleven hours and a quarter with the following TOTAL SCORE. Adams, 161 miles, 8 laps. Lyman, 156 miles, 7 laps. Dustman, 155 miles, 3 laps. The prizes were a $100 wheel, a $50 gold watch and ji $35 gold medal which were won in the order above named.

The tournament was generally satisfactory though possibly not financially. The amphitheater was filled by an appreciative audience and all agreed that the Indian dances should be considered one of the features of the reunion and placed on the program next year. Every citizen of Baxter Springs-soldier or citizen should become a stockholder in the Inter-State Reunion association. The funds are needed to buy more land and make further improvements. The investment is a safe and profitable one and it is a duty you owe to the men who meet here year after year to show them that you have at least one dollar's interest in bringing them here. You need not wait for the officers to call on you to solicit subscriptions, but hunt them Up and put your name down at once.
